In the recent Odisha cyclone Fani, we heard stories of how solar energy helped revive power and restore normal lives. We believe the solar power system to be a good alternative to the mainstream sources of power until the main grid power is restored. However, in stark contrast solar project of 25 MW was badly hit by heavy flooding in Madhya Pradesh. A lot has been debated in the past about the strength and quality standards of solar panels. BIS compliance was expected to reduce the prevalence of bad quality solar panels in the Indian market. It requires all solar panel sellers in India to apply to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to obtain registration and only then can they sell the goods in India. This rule applies to solar panels, inverters, and storage batteries. As per this ruling, samples shall be taken every two years by government inspectors for these products.

We understand that the weather conditions were extreme in Madhya Pradesh, with heavy rainfall and lightning, accompanied by storm with wind speed nearing 10.44 m/sec. Even a qualified component could have failed under these bad weather conditions. But with increasing pressure on the climate, India needs to up its quality check norms and ensure sturdier installations. These constant cyclones and floods themselves act as a solid benchmark to test the Indian solar products. We do not expect the solar panels to stand strong in extreme weather conditions, but we can surely try our best to take the quality and strength one notch up. After all, solar installation involves a big investment. Time has come to revise and upgrade quality standards.
