Green Transport in India to get 20% Government Capital Subsidy with 30% Local Content

India has followed the example of Korea,China,Japan,USA and others in providing a capital subsidy to promote the use of Green Transport in India.Note China and Korea have been very aggressive in providing support and subsidy to the Green Industry.USA has also been providing soft loans and capital grants for manufacturing to Electric Vehicles and Lithium Batteries besides spending millions of dollar in R&D.Obama wants the US to become a leader in Battery Manufacturing with a 40% Global Marketshare while China recently unveiled a plan to create national champions in the Green Car Industry.Japan has also been supportive of Hybrid and Electric Car Technology with Honda and Toyota looking to dominate this emerging Auto Category.

Top Pharmaceutical Companies in India taking on the World despite inbound M&A

The growth in Pharmaceutical companies has been tremendous in India. It is the second largest growing sector in country dominating the $8 billion domestic pharma market which is growing at around 15-16% pa. The Indian pharmaceutical industry is the third largest in the world.Mergers and acquisitions have become an increasingly important feature of this industry with foreing pharma giants like Merck,Pfizer,Daiichi looking to buy these fast growing small Indian companies. The recent buyouts of Piramal by Abbott and Ranbaxy by Daiichi reflects the desire of Pharma MNCs to inorganically grow their generics strength. This has raised some concerns amongst the Indian government about the independence of the Pharma Industry. However pharma companies are proliferating taking advantage of India's low cost technical workforce to grow at breakneck speed.. A broad overview of the pharma companies based on the revenue generated in 2007 & market cap is given below:

Shipping Corporation of India Review – Positives Balanced by Negatives,FPO Price Key to Buy

Shipping Corporation of India (SCI),the government owned carrier is coming out with a Follow on Public Offering (FPO) of 84,690,730 Equity Shares to divest 18% of its equity which will be equally shared by the company and the government. At the current price the company will raise around Rs 600 crores for the company with another Rs 600 crore going to the government. SCI is India's largest shipping line by tonnage deriving most of its revenues from oil/gas transport.SCI like other shipping companies has faced a very bad 2009 due to the sharp contraction in world trade and dropping in shipping rates. However results have started to improve with the improvement in the world economy and it is returning to its normalized sales and profits. The valuation of the company is not expensive according to normalized profits however note that shipping sector in general does not enjoy high p/e due to the cyclical and capex intensive nature of the business. The pricing of SCI has not been decided as of now,in the secondary market it trades at Rs 156 which is near its 52 week low in anticipation of the share dilution due to the FPO.Here is a list of the pros and cons.

Large Utility Scale Solar Projects in USA faces Unlikely Opponents in Defense Industry and Wildlife Activists

The US Government has recently approved a number of Large Scale Solar Thermal and Photovoltaic Projects as Renewable Energy Projects rush to meet the December 2010 Deadline for getting the 30% Subsidy Cash Grants from the US Treasury.California has been leading the way with gigawatts of solar thermal plants being approved. However these projects are facing resistance from local groups due to different reasons.Green Activists are questioning the Environment Friendliness of these projects due to the harmful effects on endangered desert wildlife. While some projects have dedicated millions of dollars for the Rehabilitation and Resettlement of Tortoises and other wildlife,Green NGOs are not convinced. The 660 MW,$2 Billion Tessera Solar Thermal Plant has been put under a review of its approval due to protests that the approval was done with haste and without following proper procedures.Note Large Solar Thermal Projects need hundreds of acres of land and are being frequently built on public land.

China Leveraging Industrial Strength to become Low Cost Weapons Exporter Threatening Russia

China is using its industrial strengths to become an emerging low cost low quality Weapons Exporters.Note the Global Arms Market is dominated by USA and Russia with UK,France,Germany the other major exporters.China,India are the biggest importers of arms with most of their purchases from Russia. However the equation is set to change with China moving up the Technology Ladder to become an Arms Exporter.China has started to export fighter aircraft and missiles and is looking to export drones as well. Its major customers are countries which have difficulty in finding weapons elsewhere.Pakistan is the biggest customer with joint development of weapons with China.Note Russia has become alarmed over the developments as many of Chinese arms said to be copied from Russian Technology.

7 Reasons Why the Climate Change Meet in Cancun,Mexico will Fail

Climate Change in the last year has faced one hit after another which should culminate in the failure of the Cancun,Mexico talks which is to start on November 29.Note there are not many expectations from the Cancun Climate Change negotiations in sharp contrast to the Copenhagen Talks in 2009.Despite the global attention and expectations from the Danish hosted Climate Meet,Copenhagen was a total disaster putting Global Warming in the Backburner despite more and more evidence of the massive global harmful effects. In the recent year, the Fossil Fuel Lobbies have been trying to discredit the very agency in charge of spearheading the war against Global Warming. They have been largely successful with global polls revealing a distinct cooling towards Global Warming Efforts.China despite huge investments into Clean Technology is emitting more Carbon Dioxide while USA has completely given up its Global Leadership on the most pressing World Problem. Here are the Reasons why the Cancun Climate Change Talks would fail.

Voracious Surging Coal Demand in India and China Defeats Climate Change Mitigation Efforts

Coal Demand continues to grow at steep pace in India and China defeating the efforts of Climate Change Activists in the Developed World.Building a Thermal Power Project in Europe and USA has become exceedingly difficult due to concerns of the detrimental health, air quality and pollution effects of Coal Derived Electricity and Heat.Coal is considered as the Dirtiest Form of Fossil Fuel Energy making it a prime target in Climate Change Fighting Efforts. However China with around 3 Billion Tons of Coal Consumption and India with another 500 million Tons depend on King Coal for majority of their Energy Needs. While China generates 80% of its Electricity from Coal,India generates around 65%.While both countries have Huge Reserves and Production of Coal, their voracious demand is leading to surging imports. These Imports are being sourced from countries like Australia,Canada and USA which are going through Coal Mining Booms.Ports are getting congested as Infrastructure failed to meet the growing coal needs of India and China.

India Solar Thermal Bidding sees Massive Discounts;479 MW Projects to be constructed with 90% in Rajasthan

India's ambitious JNNSM Plan to build 20 GW of Solar Capacity by 2022 has seen projects being awarded for 479 MW of Solar Thermal Projects under Phase-1.The Solar Project Bidding was expected to be extremely competitive and it turned out to be exactly that with dis conts of more than 30% being offered to the base price of RS 15.31 for Solar Thermal generated Electricty.Note Rs 15.31 was determined to be a decent price on which a Solar Thermal Plant Developer could get decent returns just a year ago. This means that a 30% Discount would lead to zero or very low returns for the Solar Thermal Winners.According to news reports there are 7 winners for these Solar Thermal Plants 6 of which will come up in Rajasthan which seems to be the biggest winner of these Solar Subsidy Scheme.Andhra Pradesh is the only other state to win a Solar Thermal Project. There were about 60 applicants for the Solar Thermal Part of the Phase 1 JNNSM Bidding from which these 7 have been selected.

Claris LifeSciences Stock IPO Review – Good Growth,Sector and Valuation against Low Quality Management

Claris Lifesciences is one of the few decent size pharmaceutical companies coming out with an IPO of around Rs 300 crores ($65mm) in the price band of Rs 278-293 which would give it a market cap of around Rs 1400 crore. Most of the money would be used in manufacturing expansion as the company is still in the capex phase spending around $20-30mm annually. There is a lot to like in the stock except for the management. The Pharma Sector is one where India has done extremely well boosted by its low cost qualified labor something like the IT sector. The Indian Pharma Sector excel in the Generics Category which has been receiving increasing global attention for reducing ballooning health-care costs.India posseses a definite competitive advantage in the Generics Category. Here is the list of pros and cons for Claris LifeSciences

Rise of Social Networking in India – An Incredible 8 out of 10 School Students Hooked

A Recent Survey conducted by TCS shows that 85% of School Students were hooked on to Social Networking. With poll of 10,000 students taken amongst students in the range of 12-18 from 11 cities, the sample may not be an exact one. However it shows that around 8 out of 10 school students are members of Networking sites such as Myspace,Facebook,Orkut and others.Orkut continues to be the dominant SN website despite its poor performance globally.Facebook has been rising exponentially with some students spending 2 hours or more everyday on Facebook. The rise of Social Networking portends important changes for marketers and educationists.Note Google and Wiki are also well represented with school students using them increasingly to access information and entertainment.

Solar Energy Industry to use an impressive $1.5 Billion worth of Silver Metal

Solar Panels has suddenly become one of the biggest industrial consumers of the Silver Metal in 2010.The massive growth of the solar industry has surprised analysts and forecasters alike and caused surprising demand in the most unlikely of places. With 15-17 GW of Solar Panel Production estimated in 2010,the silver consumption will be around 65 million ounces or 1800 tons. With production of around 21000 tons, the Solar Industry is now responsible for around 9% of the global Silver production.Note Despite Silver touching new record highs,it has not affected the solar prices much which have continued to decline by almost 50% in the last couple of years.

Foreigner Bond Tax becomes favorite Capital Control as Dollar Deluges Emerging Markets

Deflating Developed Countries are fueling Inflation in Developing Ones with ultra low interest rates.QE2 has been heavily criticized around the world due to the dangers of it creating asset bubbles in emerging markets as yield hungry investors look for growth at any price. With hundred of billions flooding emerging debt and equity markets, the situation has become volatile for a lot of countries.Brazil has already seen its currency skyrocket in the last 2-3 years due to the huge spread between its bond yields and the US interest rates. With carry investors able to make around 10%,Brazil remains a favorite market for the inflow of dollars.Other countries like Thailand,Malaysia,Indonesia have seen their stock markets rallying to all time highs as well. Many of these countries have already imposed capital controls earlier. Now they are increasing further,as monetary authorities rush to close the gates.

Nokia Turnaround faces another Bump as Flagship Smartphone N8 faces Power Problems

Nokia is trying to turnaround its sinking fortunes with a radical change in strategy which involves New Hardware - N8,Software - Meego Operating System with Intel,AMD and Management - Elop from Microsoft. However the changes don't seem to be working as of now.White Box Mobile Phones from China continue to erode Nokia's marketshare in emerging markets while Google and Apple finish it off in the high end smartphone segments.N8 with its 12 Megapixel Camera was supposed to be Nokia's answer to the iPhone and Android handsets Galaxy,Incredible and Droid. However N8 is already facing teething problems with Delays,Lack of Sex Appeal and the latest power problems with some of its handsets. This is not going to do any good to Nokia's smartphone prospects as it lacks the aura of the iPhone.Despite some Signal problems,iPhone sales have continued to power through while Nokia does not have anything near the same brand power. It is playing the role of a challenger despite its dominant marketshare in the world smartphone market and can't afford any missteps.

"Renewable Energy Certificate" Policy Starts in India – What you need to Know and Who will Benefit

Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) Policy is starting in India tomorrow which will allow Green Energy Generators to earn additional tariff.Note the REC Mechanism is also present in different forms in Italy,USA and Australia and has proven a good incentive to promoter Renewable Energy in those countries.India's Electricity Regulator (CERC) has been actively implementing different orders to boost Green Energy Generation.CERC had earlier mandated a 6% Renewable Energy Percentage from Alternative Energy which would go upto 15% by 2020.The REC Policy will help in achieving those targets by providing a pseud market linked mechanism to inentivize Green Power Producers. Who will Benefit Renewable Energy Companies and Green Utilities are set to benefit the most from this Policy.Suzlon has already welcomed the policy saying that Financing will ease for Renewable Energy Projects.Orient Green Power, the largest Green Focused Utility will also be a big beneficiary.Local Indian Wind Turbine Companies should also benefit from the Scheme. It also provides companies outside the JNNSM to get decent returns from solar generation as the REC band for Solar REC has been set between Rs 12-17/Kwh.India need to increase Renewable Energy Capacity by at least 50 GW in the next 10 year to meet the 15% CERC Target

Top Information Technology (IT),Hardware and Software Companies in India Categorized by Tiers

India is a Software Powerhouse ,home to some top Technology Companies like Infosys,TCS and Wipro.Besides top IT Companies worldwide have huge India Development Centers. No Technology Company of Decent Size can afford not to have a Sizeable base in India.Project Management Skills and a Huge Engineering Workforce have made India a power to reckon with. However most of the IT work done in India continues to be of low value addition. Most of the Technology Development and Research Work continues to happen in the US.That is the reason that you don't see a Google or Apple being incubated in India till now. However things have started to move up the value ladder with Large Indian IT Companies fast approaching the scale limits on IT Outsourcing. However their efforts till date have not been very encouraging.India's IT Companies don't find a slot in the Top 10 Indian Companies, however Infosys and TCS are present in the Top 10 by Market Value.Note Top Indian IT Companies have increased the Lead over the middle and smaller IT Companies recently as Global Customers look towards Bigger Indian Companies as more Reliable. Here is a list of Top Indian IT Companies which I have divided them into 3 Tiers depending on their scale, market value ,quality and growth

Yet Again China under Suspicion for CyberAttack on USA

Note the Chinese government has completely denied any wrongdoing and it is almost impossible to prove the allegations. However the Chinese Origin IP Addresses point to the Chinese origin of the attacks. One of the main reasons for Google leaving China was the cyberattack on Google computers.China has become the 2nd largest economy in the world and a major world power. With growing power comes more responsibility though can't think of any global power taking much of that ( USA till recently believed in preemptive attacks on weaker countries).Growing cyberattacks will lead to increased security and restriction of the Internet which is to the detriment of all countries.Note the development of Networking and Communication Technologies has been a key element of the growing prosperity the world over.

Soros,Khosla backed SKS Microfinance Debacle Exposes India Regulatory and Governance Risks

India's Fast Growing Economy based on Consumption rather than Exports has made it a Darling for International Fund Managers. When the whole world is suffering from some structural crisis or the other,India seems an like an oasis in the desert. However like a Mirage, the Governance and Regulatory Shortcomings make India look much better than what it is.$90 Billion of Record Foreign Inflows have been invested into India mostly into the booming Stock Market even as Indian Retail investors have fled. The dichotomy is perhaps explained by the problems faced by people on the ground who have a better sense than Fund Managers sitting in their Glass Towers in Singapore,New York and London.Insitutional Investors in India are mostly Compromised or Incompetent in my view herding into the Indian Markets dazed by the positive aspects of the Indian Economy while glossing over the Risks.Crushing Income Disparity where a $2 Billion Home is constructed while 80% of Indians live on less than $2 day,Pervasive Corruption with Billions being Swindled in Telecom and Land Scams,Massive Red Tape and Policy Bankruptcy has been ignored. However these Risks remain as can be seen by the SKS Microfinance Debacle.

Prius Producer Toyota set to Launch 2012 Blitz of New Models to Consolidate Hybrid Vehicle Leadership

Toyota is a Leader in Hybrid Vehicles with its iconic Prius the biggest selling Hybrid Car by Far.Toyota has been cautious about the growing rush into the Electric Vehicle Category. It has tied up with the much hyped up US Startup Tesla to introduce an EV RAV4,however its concentrating its energies on the Hybrid Car Market.Note another Japanese Automajor Honda is putting its bet on the Hybrid Segment of the Green Vehicle Market. The Economics of the Electric Vehicle Market as well as its Carbon Footprint is suspect despite all the media hoopla being created around it.While the Competition has increased substantially around both the EV market and its allied Battery Sector, the profits are far off.Hitachi has forecast losses for the next 2-3 years as China and USA compete to create national champions in the EV sector with Obama aiming for a 40% global marketshare .

Curtains Fall on only US Carbon Trading Chicago Climate Exchange on Republican Ascendancy

Chicago Climate Exchange the only USA Exchange to allow trading of Carbon Emission Credits has been shut down by its owner ICE.While I am no fan of Carbon Emissions Cap and Trade Policy as it gives rise to Frauds and Misplaced Incentives, the mechanism is one of the popular subsidy tools in combating Global Climate Change.Note Carbon Cap and Trading was on the Policy Agenda of the Obama Administration, however a deadlock in the Senate prevented any move in 2010.The US has been a huge laggard in the global warming fight and with the Republican Ascendancy following the MidTerm Polls, things are set to stay the same.Despite the BP Oil Spill and Record Global Temperatures,US remains blind to its climate obligations. With US reluctance, the Climate Change has been in Cold Storage with little progress expected in Cancun Meet.

Top 10 Companies in India are mostly concentrated in the Financial and Oil/Gas Sectors

India's Fast Growing Economy is seeing substantial churn in the Top 10 Rankings for Companies.Coal India which recently did a successful IPO straightaway went from being a Government Owned Private Company to the Top 5 in Market Capitalization Rankings. The Top 10 Rankings are dominated by State Owned Companies known as PSUs in India.Despite Privatization in the 1990s,Government Companies Lead the Rankings.Note the Top 10 Rankings don't have any Private Companies because of the lack of good information about their Financials.Note Most of the Largest Companies in India are related to Banding and Oil/Gas as is the case worldwide.India's Technology Companies like Infosys,TCS and others are still way behind in Revenues compared to the dominant Materials,Fossil Fuel,Industrial and Financial Sectors. However note that the diversity is much greater when you rank the companies by their market capitalization.TCS and Infosys are both amongst the top 5 recovering strongly in 2010 from their 2008 underperformance. You also see a Capital Goods and Telecom Representation in this Top 10 Rankings

Will Datang and Huaneng Renewable Energy IPOs Fail like other Green Utilities in 2010

Giant Chinese Utilities Datang and Huaneng are doing roadshows for the IPOs of their Renewable Energy Arms which would raise more than Billion Dollars Each.Note Green Utilities have become a separate Green Investment Class with lots of Asian and European Utilities already doing an IPO of their Green Subsidiaries or are in the process of doing so.However 2010 has been a bad year for Green Energy Stocks and Green Utilities have been no different. While First Wind Holdings a pure play USA Wind Farm Developer failed to get listed despite lowering its Issue Price,Indian Orient Green Power and Italian Enel Green Power have performed miserably even after listing at a much lowered stock price.Despite the negative sentiment towards Green Utilities mainly due to the Headwinds being faced by Wind Industry in 2010,Green Utilities are one of the safest ways to invest in the Alternative Energy Sector given the nascent highly volatile nature of the industry.

"Corruption as Tradition" Justification in Bangalore Land Scam by Chief Minister of Indian State

Corruption in India has taken a widely virulent and blatant form with scams popping up almost everyday.Greed is Good has become the motto for India's Role Models in Sport and Military as well.India's Politicians are Leading the protagonists with Realty being the Main Theme.Note Real Estate companies in India are notorious for corruption with the sector being avoided by Fund Managers.India's Southern State of Karnataka is known for its IT Industry with capital Bangalore famous as a Knowledge Hub.However the Politicians of that State have made it the Corruption Capital with Bangalore equally famous for Land Grabbing and Real Estate Scams by Bureaucrats and Politicians. While Districts in the State have been made famous by Robber Mining Barons, the capital is famous for Realty Shenanigans.

Why are India and Bangladesh Economic and Political Relations Strengthening

India's Relations with its Neighbours in South Asia has mostly been strained despite sharing a common history and culture. While China and Pakistan remains India's topmost concerns with 4 wars being fought with these 2 countries in the last 65 years, the other smaller neighbours have not always been too friendly. However things seem to be improving with Bangladesh which is completely encircled by India on 3 sides.Bangladesh has viewed Big Brother India with suspicion despite India playing a crucial role in Bangladesh's Liberation from Pakistan during 1971.However the Bonhomie since 1971 was lost as subsequent military rulers and the BNP ruled coalition viewed India as an adversary. However the coming back to power of Shiekh Hasina led AWP has put India and Bangladesh on a new level. The reasons behind India-Bangladesh closeness are due to

Manganese Ore India Review,Valuation and Analysis – Government Owned High Quality Mining Stock a Must Buy IPO

Valuation MOIL has a Net Worth of Rs 1860 crores and a NAV of around Rs 110/share.The Company will probably earn around Rs 700 crore this fiscal year after doing Rs 465 crores last year (which was a bad year for the industry).Operating Cash Flow has been generally higher than the Net Profit leading to improved cash position over the last 4 years. The Capital Requirements of the Business is quite low leading to high Return Metrics. If the Government sells the 20% stake at Rs 1500 crore that would give the company a market cap of Rs 7500 crore.Taking out the Rs 1700 crore in cash would make the company be valued at 3.2x BV and 8-9x P/E.This is a substantial discount to Global Mining Companies. Summary Like Coal India Limited,MOIL looks like a very safe commodity investment at a cheap valuation. With growing Indian Demand,MOIL can hardly miss continuing on a steady 10-15% earnings growth over the next 4-5 years. If the commodity prices flare up again like 2008 due to QE2,then MOIL provides a big upside as well. Its a good investment for investors looking to invest in safe mining plays. With government ownership, the typical Indian management risk is also greatly mitigated.

RPP Infra Projects Review and Analysis – Expensively Priced,Small Construction Junk IPO

India has seen a rash of junk IPO offerings in the past year due to the strong bullish conditions. Most of these IPOs have managed to raise money based on stock market shenanigans by Market "Operators".More than 50% of these micro cap IPO junk has given negative returns but the flow seems unabated as India has become an IPO Pump and Dump Heaven.Aster Silicates,Tarapur Transformers,Prakash Steelage,Sea TV are some of the microcap junk that I have written about earlier.R.R.P Constructions joins the infamous bandwagon trying to sucker money from retail investors. The Company is expensively prices, slow growing (compared to other construction peers),has management that you would not want to trust a dollar with, high debt and still wants you to pay ~25x P/E.There are many better opportunities in the Construction and Infrastructure Space in India right now for example Tecpro Systems and VA Tech Wabag. Here are some R.R.P Construction stock negatives gleaned from its DRHP as I could not find any positive about the company.

Understanding Green Buildings Part 1 – Information and Investment Options in this crucial Green Sector remains surprisingly scarce

Green Buildings are a huge multibillion dollar industry but from an investor's point of view the information and investment avenues about this very important Green Sector remains surprisingly scare. Most of the investment options in Green Buildings remains confined to huge conglomerates like Johnson Controls,Honeywell,Schnieder Electric,Siemens and a few small startups like Serious Materials. Most of the information about Green Buildings can be gleaned from the US Green Buidling Council and EPA.Interest in Green Buildings started in the 1970s and still remains a niche concept despite huge strides in the 21st Century.Certifications like LEED has brought awareness about Green Buildings but they still occupy a remote corner in the Green Investor's mind.In the Green Building Series,I will try to explain the concept of Green Buildings. For a start here is the Definition of a Green Building also known as a Sustainable Building.

Why Solar Power in India will be led by Sunny,Western States of Gujarat and Rajasthan

Solar Energy in India represents one of the best Energy opportunities in the 21st Century. However the growth at least in the initial stages will be geographically unequal. This is due to the fact that Solar Power requires strong government support and subsidy currently.Without a proactive administration which smooths out the process of setting up a solar plant, growth of solar energy is almost impossible. The Indian Federal Government has already given it a strong push targeting 1000 MW by 2013 and 20 GW by 2022 under the JNSSM.While the Subsidy Program is facing some initial hurdles due to debt financing and aggressive project bidding, the long term secular growth story remains good. Some states have also been aggressive in supporting solar energy namely the western states of Gujarat and Rajasthan.
