Why Solar Power in India will be led by Sunny,Western States of Gujarat and Rajasthan

Solar Energy in India represents one of the best Energy opportunities in the 21st Century. However the growth at least in the initial stages will be geographically unequal. This is due to the fact that Solar Power requires strong government support and subsidy currently.Without a proactive administration which smooths out the process of setting up a solar plant, growth of solar energy is almost impossible. The Indian Federal Government has already given it a strong push targeting 1000 MW by 2013 and 20 GW by 2022 under the JNSSM.While the Subsidy Program is facing some initial hurdles due to debt financing and aggressive project bidding, the long term secular growth story remains good. Some states have also been aggressive in supporting solar energy namely the western states of Gujarat and Rajasthan.

India Solar Project Bidding under JNNSM to be Hypercompetitive and Loss Making like China

India's 150 MW Solar Allocation to PV Technology has seen overbidding upto 10 times and the winners will be decided based upon the discounting on the Rs 17.91/Kwh (40c/KwH).The discounting promises to be clearly be irrational and loss making as Large Conglomerates and Integrated Solar Companies fight with each other to win projects at any cost.Feed in Tariffs across the world has only worked out well where there is no discounting or bidding mechanism. In case of bidding, especially in immature nascent markets, the winners of the projects end up as the losers.Renewable Energy also ends up on the losing side as many of these projects are not completed or have to be restructured defeating the entire purpose of the Subsidy Scheme.India's Solar Energy Sector promises to be one of the biggest energy opportunities in the 21st Century. However this will require a very smart subsidy strategy by the government

Solar Energy in India draws another Industrial Giant as Areva looks to invest $3 Billion in Solar Thermal

Solar Energy Future Growth has been vastly underestimated by policy makers and analysts but private companies are recognized the huge potential.India's JNNSM Policy which is meant to jumpstart India's Solar Energy has drawn huge interest from both domestic and foreign companies. The number of Solar Companies in India are growing at a rapid pace attracted by the huge opportunity. While starting troubles like project financing of debt etc are present, the long term growth potential of Solar Energy in India is tremendous.Global Industrial Giants like GE,Siemens have already established or in the process of investing huge sums of money to capitalize on this Green Trend. Now French Giant Areva has joined them.Note Areva is the global leader in nuclear equipment technology and is not known for its prowess in Solar and Wind Energy. However the company is making a play in Solar Thermal Technology where it hopes to use its existing skills and knowledge.Areva had acquired US startup Ausra which had fallen on hard times earlier. However Areva has not won too many Solar Thermal Projects in the recent past. However things may change starting with India

India's Parliamentary Building follows the Green Trend in Installing Solar Panels like the White House

Putting up Solar Panels on prominent landmarks is an easy and cheap way to promote Green Energy. In the last few years, a number for prominent places in the world have been installing solar energy in an effort to reduce GHGs and to publicize the clean economy. It advertises the advantages of putting solar panels in powering buildings which account for 40% of the global energy usage.'s Sydney's Opera House,India's Golden Temple are some of the other landmarks that have installed solar panels to cut fossil fuel use and encourage the use of renewable energy.White House has also decided to install solar panels next year after a prolonged campaign by green activists.Note White House had earlier installed solar panels during the time of Jimmy Carter and the OPEC Oil Embargo. These has been decommissioned by Reagan reflecting changed energy fundamentals.India's Parliament House has now decided to go green using solar panels and biomass plants to drastically reduce its carbon footprint. The Indian Parliament generate a huge amount of food waste which will help in powering the biomass plant.

Green India Funding by Annual Billion Dollar Coal Tax a Good Move

India hopes to derive annual revenues of more than $1 billion dollars from a new coal tax it has introduced. These revenues will go to a proposed Green Bank which will fund Green Energy Projects and R&D in the Country. While initially the funds will be managed by the government's financial agency IREDA,later on a full fledged Green Bank will be managing the annual $1 Billion Coal Tax.Note Coal is the biggest Energy Source for India and China. Both countries are trying to diversify their dependence from Coal as it is the dirtiest form of energy. However the cheapness and abundance has made coal indispensable to the voracious energy requirements of both countries.Coal India Limited (CIL) which came out with an IPO recently was a resounding success in India showing that investors believe that Coal will contiue to grow and dominate the Energy Scene in India.

Solar Power Companies in India Growing by the Day but a Long Way to Go

Solar Power in India is growing at a rapid clip with the strong government support through the ambitious Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM).Rapidly Falling Costs,Massive Power Deficits,Huge Growing Energy Demand and Peak Oil all make Solar Energy in India one of the biggest energy opportunities in the 21st Century.People are slowly recognizing this large Green Money Making Opportunity with companies like Suntech,Siemens and Trina Solar entering into partnership with local players.Suntech has tied up with independent power producer IPP while Siemens has tied up for solar thermal energy with the Adani Conglomerate. This is just the initial trickle with large foreign companies waiting to flood the Indian market. There have been some initial hiccups in Debt Financing of Solar Energy in India but I expect the long term secular growth story to be unaffected. Solar Power Companies in India can be divided into various categories based on solar equipment manufacturing, independent power producer, renewable arms of large power companies etc.I have already covered the Top 10 Solar Module Production Companies in my Solar Panels in India article. Here is the list once again.

Solar Energy in India Imperative for Rich State of Haryana But Desperately Poor in Renewable Energy

Haryana is one of the richest states in India strategically located near India's capital of Delhi.Haryana cities like Gurgaon and Faridabad have benefited hugely from being part of India's National Capital Region (NCR).However Haryana only generates 0.5% of its 4000 MW of Electricity from Renewable Energy Sources. The state has negligible Wind or Biomass Energy.Despite a Department of Renewable Energy being setup to specifically promote the use of Alternative Energy Sources, the state has not had much success.Haryana is richly endowed with Solar Energy Resources with 320 days sunny days. The State has managed to win some allocation from the centre's JNNSM scheme. It is also promoting the use of solar energy through disseminating solar kits amongst 2000 schools and providing solar lighting in around 500 villages.Note India had already made it mandatory for 6% of the Energy to be generated from Renewable Energy Sources.Haryana has a long way to go and might have to buy a huge amount of expensive Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) unless it gets its act together.

After Vedanta,Posco's Giant Steel Project could face the Indian Environmental Axe

India's Massively Growing Industry is clashing head-on with the Environment leading to huge fissures. There have been numerous clashes already with many of the mega industrial projects being cancelled or shifted.Tata Motor's Nano Project in Singur,West Bengal was probably the most famous project to be scrapped after a huge people's uprising due to loss of land and livelihood.Unlike China, where industry manages to always win over people's protests,it is not that easy in India's Democracy.Orissa recently saw Vedanta Resources Bauxite Mining Project cancelled over loss of tribal sacred land loss concerns. This was a huge victory for India's environmentalists as officials and companies were found breaking forest and environment laws. Now POSCO which has been trying to build a $12 Billion Steel Plant in the Mineral Rich State of Eastern India finds that Green Approvals given might be cancelled by a panel of government experts.Note the POSCO project was stopped recently pending an environmental assessment whose report will be published on Oct 25.Despite hectic lobbying by POSCO and the provincial Orissa government, the project looks set for more delays.Note the Steel Plant which was started in 2005 is already way behind schedule.

List of Wind Energy Companies in India – Pretenders or World Beaters

Wind Energy in India is the biggest Green Industry currently with around 1 GW of Wind Power Capacity being installed in a year on average. The Growth in Wind Industry has been driven by states like Tamil Nadu who have heavily subsidized and promted Wind Energy.India at around 10 GW of Wind Capacity is the world's 5th largest Wind Energy Producer. However India remains far behind China in terms of Wind Energy Growth .Last Year China installed nearly 13 GW of Wind Energy which is more than India's total installed capacity of Wind Energy. With a target of around 230 GW by 2020,China is on track to install 20 GW of WInd Capacity a Year in the next 10 years which would make India a Pygmy. Also two of the largest Wind Turbine Producers Sinovel and Goldwind are from China.India despite producing a world class company Suzlon in the early states of Wind Industry Development is struggling.Suzlon has fallen on very hard times running big losses while other Wind Companies are of hardly any decent size.

Solar Panels in India – Complete Guide on Buying Low Cost PV Panels from Solar Energy System Manufacturers

Note Solar Panels prices differ widely depending on the technology, power, brand and quality.Thin Film Panels in general cost lower than crystalline silicon panels.Higher Power Panels have a higher price as they generate more electricity.Good Brands also have a higher price tag while cheap imported Chinese panels cost less.Solar Panel prices have decreased by almost 50% in the last 2-3 years and now sell for around Rs 1800-2500 per panel internationally and should fall to around Rs 1000 in the next 3-4 years . However for small installations on house of 1-5 KiloWatts, panels sold by distributors is more expensive and can cost you almost 50% more. Also Solar Panels form only a part of the total Solar System Cost. The total cost of installation, equipment and wiring can cost upto Rs 30,000/Kilowatt.

Risks and Negatives with Highly Rated Coal India IPO

Coal India is coming out with India's biggest IPO offering in the Stock Market History. The company seems fundamentally strong on almost all aspects and is also pricing itself at a significant discount to its global peers. Both superficially and deep down, the analysis points CIL to be a very safe investment at a cheap valuation.Other analysts are also coming to the same conclusion,as Rating Agency has given CIL a 5/5 Rating which is probably the first in the history of IPO Grading .In order to give a more balanced perspective and avoid herd tendencies,I am listing out what the risks and negatives are with this company.Note this does not make me negative on the stock on which I am very positively biased. It is just to give investors the other side of the debate which I think general analysis will lack. Despite the above Risks , I think that Coal India is one of the best quality stocks to come out in India's Primary Markets. However investors should be wary of the risks which will be glossed over by the mainstream media and brokerages . As with every investment however safe it might look, there are risks. This does not mean that investors should be fearful of every investment. It is by being aware of the risks, that prudent risk management can be done which is essential to successful investing.

Coal India IPO to be priced at a Sharp Discount to Comparable Global Coal Plays sees Huge Investor Demand

Coal India Limited (CIL) is the biggest IPO in the history of the Indian markets. The Company has generated a lot of investor interest because of a number of firsts. It is the largest coal producer in the world in one of the biggest demand growth regions. The company has excellent fundamentals being rated 5/5 by the rating agency. The government has disallowed anchor investors for the IPO as it finds that allocation could be construed as biased.Note Anchor Investors in Indian IPOs are favored investor who are preallocated a fixed amount of shares by investment bankers. This is similar to the US practice where all of the IPO is offered to institutional investors by investment bankers solely on their discretion.India is much more egalitarian in its approach to IPO regulation with a fixed amount 35% reserved for retail investors .The pricing of the issue has been a hot topic of speculation with the expected price range to give it a multiple of around 15x which is around 20-30% cheaper than comparable large US and China coal companies like Massey,Shenhua and others.

Green Investing in India – Government to Replace Diesel Usage of Telecom Towers by Renewable Energy

The Government of India has formed a high powered panel to look into replacing the usage of diesel powered gensets by Renewable Energy in Telecom Towers.India has around 300,000 Telecom Towers most of which are powered by expensive diesel generators. The reason is that a lot of the telecom towers are situated in far flung areas where the grid does not exist. Also the power supply in India is erratic and not reliable with 10 hour electricity blackouts not an infrequent occurrence. In these cases a backup supply of electricity supply is badly needed.Diesel Generators are the most popular form with Diesel heavily subsidized by the government in comparison to normal petroleum. Also Diesel Generators are widely available without huge capital costs.

Green Investing in India – How Tamil Nadu became the Biggest Alternative Energy State

Tamil Nadu is one of India's most prosperous and industrially advanced states located at its southernmost extreme. The state has shown remarkable progress in the field on Wind Energy utilizing almost 80% of its Wind Power Potential with 40% of India's total Wind Installations. With the right mix of policies,Tamil Nadu has also become the hub of Wind Energy Manufacturing with Global Heavyweights like Suzlon,Gamesa,Vestas all building plants in the State.A number of new players like Sterling Infotech and Lietner have also started manufacturing Wind Turbines in Tamil Nadu due to favorable networking effects. The state is also generates the 3rd largest amount of biomass energy with around 340 MW installed. Here are the reasons why Tamil Nadu has become the Biggest Renewable Energy State in India. 1) Tax Holidays and Subsidies - The government has given attractive subsidies to attract Wind Power Developers to the state.Rs 3.39 ( 8c/Kwh) is the tariff given to Wind Energy besides another 1c/Kwh received from the Federal Government as Generation Based Incentive (GBI).The projects in the state easily make 25-30% returns on their investment attracting a whole host of private industry developers. The Industry also gets a 10 year tax holiday, custom duty exemptions and accelerated depreciation boosting the returns even further.A 20 year PPA at fixed prices helps in building investor confidence .

Green Investing in India – Largest Electricity Producing State Maharashtra looks to boost Renewable Energy through Subsidized Grid Connection and Grants

Maharashtra is one of the most industrialized states in India but it lags behind other states in Renewable Energy. The recent mandate by the Central Electricity Regulator to increase the requirement of Renewable Energy to 6% of Electricity Produced found Maharashtra having a severe shortfall.Maharashtra has the largest power capacity in the country with around 21 GW but most of it is thermal based generation.Despite having the second largest Wind Power Capacity with 2 GW which is around 42% of the state's potential. However Maharashtra is still considerably short of the 6% Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) set by it.With CERC set to increase the Green Energy Target to 10% by 2015,Maharashtra needs not only to meet the shortfall but also to increase the share of Renewable Energy.

Hydro Power in India causing Environmental,Wildlife and Tribal Rights Concerns

Earthquake Vulnerability - Large Dam Construction has been linked to increased propensity of Earthquakes.Massive Earthquakes in China and Uttarakhand in India were linked to the building of Massive Dams in these countries.Building of Massive Man Made Structures along geologically sensitive areas has not been properly studied and understood till now Summary While Hydro Power is a necessity for an energy starved and growing economy like India, its effect have to be properly assessed and understood before going on a hydro binge.NTPC lost almost $300 million after its 600 MW project was canceled 5 years after getting permission. This was done in the face of large scale protest by local groups and NGOs.2 other projects in Uttarkhand have also been rejected leading to more losses.

"Orient Green Power" IPO Analysis- Focused Renewable Energy Utility with Fast Growth Plans however Execution is the Question

Orient Green Power Ltd (OGPL) is Indias Largest Green Utility and is one of the areas that is a good way to invest in India's Green Energy Sector. The company is owned by the Shriram Group and a couple of PE Players will issue around Rs 900 crores (~$180mm) which will result in a market cap of $450mm.OGPL is a relatively new company setting up and acquiring most of its 200 MW capacity in the last year which comprised of 152 MW of Wind Energy and the rest is Biomass Energy. The company plans to increase this capacity 4 fold to around 1000 MW in the next couple of years with Power Plants in India,Europe and Sri Lanka. The centrepiece of this expansion will be a 300 MW Wind Energy Plant in Tamil Nadu for which $10 million has been already been spent. The company's past profits and cash flow have been negative which is not exactly a concern given that most of the capacity was set up in the last year or so.I like the company's growth plans and the sector in which it operates.India suffers from a huge power deficit and Renewable Energy is being heavily promoted through Government Subsides and Renewable Energy Madates by the CERC.Trading of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) should start in a year or so giving additional revenue streams to Green Energy Producers. Here are the pros and cons of the issue

Suzlon Energy looks towards Middle Kingdom as a Panacea to all its Ills but can China Resurrect the Company

20 GW of Capacity is expected to be built by 2010 end in China up from around 10 GW in 2009.Fierce Competition in the Wind Turbine Market has led to increasing distress for smaller players.Sinovel the biggest Wind Turbine maker which sold 3.5 GW in 2009 has been using price as a weapon to drive away competitors. These Companies are now trying to expand internationally.Korean Companies like Samsung,Hyundai are investing heavily in the Wind Sector and are on track to become formidable competitors in a few years.Suzlon's Chinese Dreams looks difficult to implement in reality.

Green Investing in India – Economically Backward Orissa remains backward in Renewable Energy as well

India's most industrialized and fast growing states like Gujarat,Tamil Nadu,Maharashtra have been the most aggressive in Green Energy as well.Gujarat has attracted huge interest in Solar Energy through strong support by the government.Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra account for almost 70% of India's 8-9 GW Wind Energy capacity. However economically backward states like Orissa,Bihar,Uttar Pradesh remain laggards in this respect as well.Orissa seems a classic case where the general economic lethargy extends to the Renewable Energy Sector as well.

India's Tata Power looks to become a Geothermal Energy Leader,Targets 25% from Renewable Sources by 2017

ndia is one of the fastest growing economies in the world with fundamentals indicating that this rapid growth will continue for the next 10-20 years as well. However Green Investing in India is fraught with risk since major Green Energy Companies like Suzlon and Moser Baer have proven to be abject failures till now.A Good Way to do make Green Investments into India is through Renewable Energy Focused Utilities.Tata Power which is one of India's largest utilities is looking to focus on Green Energy as well. The company has 16% of its power supplied from Renewable Energy Sources and is looking to increase it to 25% by 2017.
