Solar Energy Protectionism – Italy joins India,Canada in formulating Domestic Content Requirements

Ontario Canada has a comprehensive solar subsidy policy which mandate that a large percentage of solar components be manufactured in Ontario in order to receive the Feed in Tariffs. This has led to a mini manufacturing boom in the province with a number of companies like Conergy,MEMC,Enphase,Canadian Solar putting up factories to take advantage of the FIT.Japan which is also a large manufacturer of solar panels with major Japanese solar companies like Sharp,Kyocera has taken Canada to the WTO citing improper competitive practises.India which has one of the largest potential in solar energy installation too has promulgated a law that requires domestic content requirements.Solar Modules must be produced in India to gain FIT under the JNNSM.This law is expected to become stricter with solar cells also to be produced in the country in the future. This has drawn howls of protest from American officials who too tried domestic content in their subsidies under the Stimulus Act.

Osama lived amongst affluent retired Pakistan officials, tracked through 4 year Courier and Burnt Trash,Body to be Buried in Islamic Tradition

Osama Bin Laden used to live in an area which was populated with affluent retired Pakistani senior military offiicers. The compound had 18 foot walls, barbed wire and internet connections. The compound was built in Abbotabad which is just 35 kms away from the Pakistan capital of Islamabad.Living in such a big compound amongst important military officials it would take a really dumb person to think that Pakistan government did not know or shelter Osama Bin Laden. It is a damning indictment of the Pakistani establisment.Note a number of terrorist incidents have a common origin in Pakistan. The Mumbai terrorist bombing in which the prime accused has said that Pakistani government officials were in the know about the bombings in which Americans and Israelis were targeted in India's financial capital Mumbai. The failed London bombing too had its origin in Pakistan. Now this operation which was conduced in the very heart of Pakistan to kill the most dreaded terrorist the world has seen.

Osama Killed in Abbottabad – What you need to Know (Pakistan Double Game,Travel Warning,Son also Killed

Osama Bin Laden the architect of the dealiest terrorist attack in human history when the Twin Towers and numerous other targest in US were attacked using airline planes has been killed.10 years after starting the campaign to kill Osama Bin Laden,US today said a military mission in Abbotabad Pakistan managed to kill the dreaded fanatic.Note Al Qaeda is the most dangerous international terrorist organization with roots in the badlands of Pakistan and Afganistan. He has been long been suspected of being sheltered in Pakistan which has become a worse hotbed of terrorism than Afganistan. What was surprising that Osama was hiding near the capital of Pakistan which implies that top officials of the Pakistani government had to be involved in hiding Osama. It is an open secret that Pakistan which is being touted as the "US ally" in fight against terrorism has long been playing a double game. The death of Osama in Pakistan brings irrefutable proof to this fact.

eSolar – Understanding this Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) Company,Technology,Products,Investors,Stock IPO Prospects

eSolar is a US based Solar Thermal Technology Startup which has managed to raise $182 million from top VCs and investors and managed to win contracts to build solar power plants using its properietary Power Tower Technology in the US,China and India.Note like Brightsource Energy,eSolar is one of the most promising CSP startups which has managed to get funding and contracts,it now needs to execute to deliver on its potential. Solar is using the Power Tower Technology same as Brightsource Technology which differs from the parabolic trough mainstream CSP Technology.Note Parabolic Trough Technology is used by most of the established Spanish players like Abengoa. It is also the Technology used in the 392 MW largest solar thermal plant in the US built in the 1980s by Luz.In this technology thousands of heliostats (mirrors) reflect the solar light onto a "Power Tower" where water or salt is heated up.This heat energy is then transferred into Electrical Energy through standard Steam Turbines and Generators used in Gas,Nuclear and Thermal Power Plants.

Suniva – Poses Good Challenge to Chinese with High Efficiency,Low Cost Artisun Solar Panels- Technology,Products and Suniva IPO Stock Prospects

Suniva is the only crystalline solar Solar Companies in the US which has been able to survive and thrive in recent times.Sunpower too has resurrected itself through strategic JVs and acquisitions. The main reason for the decline of the US solar companies has been the severe competition from the low cost Chinese Solar Industry. This has made companies like Energy Conversion Devices and Evergreen Solar shut down US factories and look towards Mexico and China to build low cost factories. However Suniva has managed to face all these competitive threats quite successfully and is looking to expand capacity in the US by building a 400 MW factory. The company even refused a DOE Loan Guarantee saying that the terms were too onerous. The company has manged to raise more then $130 million in equity and has won contracts to supply high efficiency solar cells to the Asian companies which is a first.Suniva differentiates itself through its technology which allows the production of high efficiency monocrystalline solar cells at lower cost.Note Sunpower makes the highest efficiency cells in the world in the range of 22-24% but its cost structure is too high.Suniva is looking to challenge the Taiwanese Cell Producers by marrying higher efficiency with lower cost.

Nuclear Waste Recycling – Why the USA does not do it and France,Japan do,Utility and Problems with Nuclear Reprocessing

Nuclear Recycling is the processing of the nuclear waste generated from the nuclear fuel cycle to extract useful elements like uranium and plutonium which can reused again in the Nuclear Fuel Cycle to generate electricity.About 97% of the used fuel can be recycled leaving only 3% as high-level waste. The recyclable portion is mostly uranium depleted to less than 1% U-235, with some plutonium, which is most valuable. Arising from a year's operation of a typical l000 MWe nuclear reactor, about 230 kilograms of plutonium (1% of the spent fuel) is separated in reprocessing. This can be used in fresh mixed oxide (MOX) fuel (but not weapons, due its composition). MOX fuel fabrication occurs in Europe, with some 25 years of operating experience. The main plant is in France, and started up in 1995.Major commercial reprocessing plants are operating in France and UK, with capacity of almost 5000 tonnes of used fuel per year, - equivalent to at least one third of the world's annual output. A total of some 90,000 tonnes of spent fuel has been reprocessed at these over 40 years.

Nuclear Waste Storage – A Complete Mess with Lack of Policy ,Temporary Nuclear Sites in USA,Japan and France waiting for a permanent Nuclear Facility

Nuclear Waste is one of the most difficult waste products to transport and store because of its dangerous radioactive effects.Given the long life of some of the transuranic elements Nuclear Waste has to be stored in a safe manner for thousands of years which is a tough given that the chances of leakage become enormous in such a long time scale.Storing of Nuclear Waste has to be performed in a extremely complicated manner which is also enormously costly. Also there are problems of NIMBY with Nuclear Waste Storage as nearby residents don't want such toxic waste stored anywhere close especially as it does not bring any economic or social benefits. Not there is no permanent storage site despite many decades of planning and billions of dollars being spent. While Japan and Europe reprocess the fuel in the hope that they will be used again that remains a dream with thousands of tons of HLW piling up.USA does not reprocess and also has more than 60,000 tons of nuclear waste waiting for a final home.Till then most of the spent nuclear fuel is being stored in spent fuel pools and dry casks making them vulnerable just like another Fukushima

Biggest Solar Power Plant – A Moving Target Being Superseded by even Bigger Solar Plants from First Solar

Solar Power Plants till a couple of years were quite small compared to the mainstream energy power plants. Most power plants were in the double digit range with no Solar Farms having the capacity of 100 MW or greater. This is in reference to PV Solar Power Plants and not to Solar Thermal Plants which are bigger in size.Note Solar Thermal Plants by the very nature of technology require larger sizes to be economical just like Thermal or Nuclear Power Plants. On the other hand PV Power Plants do not gain much in economies of scale and government prefer giving subsidies to distributed rooftop solar installations rather than large solar farms.

Investing in Coal a Good Idea (Think China,India) – USA Coal Companies,Stocks (Tickers) Rising valuations

Coal is the biggest source of Energy for Electricity Production in the world and its use is expected to continue to grow to 44% of the Electricity Production by 2030 (IEA).Despite Coal having many dangerous disadvantages, its Advantages of cheapness and abundance have made it the Fossil Fuel of choice. With global reserves estimated to be around 200 years,it does not have the "peak oil" characteristics as well.Though not a Coal Fan,nonetheless Coal stocks are a great investment choice due to the fact of its growing demand which is outstripping supply.China and India are massively growing their electricity, steel and cement production which requires billions of tons of coal.China consumers almost 45% of the global coal production while Indian demand is growing by leaps and demands as well.Indian Power Utilities are grabbing up Coal Mines in Africa,Australia and Asia to secure feedstock for their gigawatt thermal power plants.Despite its growing importance Coal does not have a lot of choice in terms of investment unlike Fossil Fuels like Oil and Gas.Here is a list of Coal Stocks which one can invest in and the sole Coal ETF - Market Vectors Coal ETF (KOL).

Why Media Exaggeration (NY Times) making a Big Deal about General Electric's 400 MW Solar Factory is Nonsensical

It is surprising to see the US Media jumping about saying the General Electric will build the biggest solar factory in the US when it is completely factually wrong. There are other companies that add 400 MW in a single quarter these days (eg.LDK). By the time GE builds its 400 MW Cadmium Tellurium Solar Panel facility, there will be around 20 players in the world with more than 1000 MW capacity.GE has been claiming high efficiencies for its Thin Film Solar Panels but the claims that it will be able to dethrone First Solar as the Leader seems far fetched currently.Note First Solar will have almost 7 times more capacity worldwide by the time GE builds its first solar panel facility.GE has been long been developing the Cadmium Tellurium Technology buying up Prime Solar.

Anti Environment Groups file frivolous lawsuit against Colorado 30% Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) by 2020

USA has been sorely lacking in the fight against Climate Change and Global Warming.Greenhouse Gas Emissions by the US has increased tremendously from 1990 the benchmark year when countries under Kyoto Protocol pledged to reduced their Carbon Emissions. However US has refused to do anything and has not even signed the Kyoto Protocol. The hopelessly rudderless leadership in the US has failed to pass any Clean Energy Laws like Cap and Trade ( not my favorite),Federal RPS etc. Some states have been showing proactive leadership like California despite massive opposition by the powerful oil and gas lobby (Valero,Koch Brothers).Their efforts are being stymied by the very rich who don't care about global warming as they can easily use their money to mitigate any affect on them and the powerful fossil fuel lobby with their thinktank puppets.

Environmental Pressure Leads to Conversion of Virginia Coal Plant to Biomass

The strict environmental regulations of EPA is leading to converion of a Virgina Coal Plant to a Biomass Fired one.Note the US Congress and Senate have failed to move ahead on climate legislation remaining hopelessly deadlocked on any climate deal.Despite numerous draft laws,no common law has been passed as Republicans fail completely in understanding global warming remaining in the pockets of the powerful oil and gas lobby.EPA remains the only government body which is doing something to reduce pollution and at the same time fight for climate change. The strict new rules against emission of harmful gases like sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxide, mercury has forced a Virginia Coal Plant to convert from thermal to biomass.

India Criticizes Renminbi Undervaluation,Calls for Diversifying away from Chinese Imports

India has become the latest country to join in the bashing of Renminbi undervaluation saying it leads to a massive advantage for Chinese exporters.A research paper from India's Central Bank says that its artificially boosts China giving it a competitive advantage over Indian exports.Note Brazil another one of the famed BRIC quartet has too been complaining about Chinese imports swamping its industry.Note Brazil has seen massive currency appreciation in recent years due to a combination of high interest rates and strong economic fundamentals.

US Exim Bank supports Amercian Solar Companies through cheap vendor financing in a straight fight with Chinese State Banks

One of the major reasons for the Chinese success in the export markets in Asia and Africa have been the massive vendor financing done by state owned Chinese banks.Large orders have been won by Chinese companies like Dongfang Electric and Huawei as Chinese Banks financed the multi billion Indian orders by cheap loans.Note in large project finance cases cheap loans can make a huge difference in project returns and can be the clincher in choosing the equipment supplier. The US Exim Bank too seems to be pulling up its socks in helping American companies win large equipment orders through vendor financing.Note the US Exim Bank had got involved in a huge controversy when it agreed to finance a utlra mega power plant based on coal energy by Reliance Power in India.Despite protests by environmentalists,Exim Bank had gone ahead in financing as it would lead to jobs in America.Note USA is one of the biggest laggards in climate change and the government does not really care much out there.

Obama's New Energy Policy – Just a lot of Empty Gas (Rhetoric)

Obama's outlined a New Energy Policy as he periodically does without any far reaching national goals on to reduce America's dependence on billions of barrels of imported oil which cause global warming, finance terrorist and prop up brutal regimes in the Middle East. However his periodic bursts of rhetoric on the US Energy Policy is nothing but a lot of empty gas without any specifics.Earlier he used to stress on nuclear energy which has been thrown out of the window with the Fukushima nuclear disaster. His plans of supporting the nuclear energy industry with $36 billion in DOE loans seems a bad if not a gruesome joke.Similarly last year his plans of allowing offshore drilling for Oil also fell flat after the massive BP Oil Spill ecological disaster.

Electric Generating Capacity by Country – World Electricity Production Growth driven by Emerging Markets

The world's total electricity generating capacity is around 4500 GW (2007 figures) which is expected to increase by 1.7% each year to rise to 7000 GW by 2035 according to EIA.USA is still the world's largest electricity producing country with more than 20% of the world's power capacity with around 1 Terawatts of Electricity Capacity.China has been rapidly adding capacity in the last decade and the second biggest electricity producing country with more than 700 GW more than 70% of which is from coal fired power plants.Japan,Russia and India are No.3,4 and 5 on the list with 280 Gw,220 GW and 159GW respectively.Europe is the third largest region in terms of electricity capacity with more than 800 GW.India is rapidly increasing capacity and is projected to be the No.3 in the list by 2020 as it looks to more almost treble its current electricity capacity of around 150 GW (in 2007).

Why is the UN not Enforcing a "No Fly Zone" in Yemen and Bahrain despite Horrendous Civilian Massacres – Western Double Standards

The United Nations has voted on enforcing a "No Fly Zone" in Libya as Colonel Gadhaffi's forces backed by aircraft and artillery have bombed their way to a winning position in Libya. The democratic protests in Libya has been violently suppressed by the despotic regime over there which has appeared at times as mad and lunatic. The rebels despite popular support have been cowed down by the massive military power of Gadhaffi and his mercenaries. This has finally made the United Nations Security Council decide on attacking Libyan army by Air and enforcing a "No Fly Zone'.Note this has been done despite misgivings by China and others who abstained. However the West led by France has been adamant on helping democracy.

Wikileaks Exposes More Muck in Indian Politics (Satish Sharma,Nahiketa Kapur,Karti Chidambaram,M.K. Alagiri) – Legislators Bribed in Nuclear Energy Policy,Cash for Poor Votes

The Wikileaks Cable says that an Indian Official Nachiketa Kapur showed an Embassy Staffer Two Chests filled with millions of Ruppees in Cash meant for bribing legislators. This corruption scam is the latest in a series over the last 6 months or so.Already India's previous Telecom Minister is cooling his heels in Jail and crucial leaders of the ruling coalition have been questioned in the 2G Scam. Most of Indian corporate chieftains have also been implicated in the Telecom Scam with mudslinging in full flow.India's Foreign Policy is being made by such crass and corrupt leaders is a shocking revelation though nothing new.Earlier Jharkand state had seen its legislators convicted of accepting bags full of cash during the earlier Congress regime. So this means that bribing and making Indian Policies is not a new thing.India's Opposition Parties are making a huge hue and cry and demanding the PM's resignation.

No Global Media Outrage as American made Apaches Gunships used by GCC against Bahrain citizens calling for UN Help

The Western Nations have maintained a deafening silence as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) which is the gang of Sunni nations in the Middle East has used Apache Gunships against unarmed citizens of Bahrain. The US and the western media (blogs as well) have been strangely silent on this murderous attack on peaceful citizens.Bahrain has been on the Boil as Shia citizens have been demanding their legitimate rights this rich island nation. However the rulers which are from the Sunni minority have not budged instead they have called foreign troops to kill their own citizens.Global "Human Rights Champion" the US and its leader Clinton and Obama are hypocritically silent,so is the normally frantic Sarkozy.

Will USA,India and China Learn from Japanese Tsunami Nuclear Disaster and promote Solar and Wind

The Tsunami Nuclear Energy Disaster which is unfolding in Japan highlights that Nuclear Energy can cause some very serious damage though the safety of the nuclear reactors are highly touted in the media by the Nuclear Energy Industry. These Nuclear Plants in Japan are quite old but so are most of the Nuclear Energy facilities in the West. Most of these Nuclear Plants are susceptible to serious natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis. In case of a nuclear meltdown the radiation from the Nuclear Plants can not only cause more deaths and injuries from natural causes but also make the area around the Nuclear Plant uninhabitable for hundreds of years.India and China are on a major Nuclear Energy Building Spree even though their nuclear plants have faced minor accidents in recent years. With this Nuclear Disaster, the protests in the se countries are set to grow with NIMBY becoming the biggest hurdle.Already protests are being held in Jaitapur in Maharashtra over damage to the ecology, expect the Japan's nuclear reactor incident to basically kill this Areva-NPCIL plant.Nuclear plants in the US and Europe are already facing huge cost and time overruns. This new problem should cause those projects to also die off.

Disadvantages of Wind Power – A Rebuttal as the Selfish Delay Wind Farms to Death

Wind Power has come under attack in the USA focused around the Cape Wind Project off the eastern shore. The project which was conceived over 10 years ago has not managed to still build the Wind Farm due to countless number of lawsuits filed for myriad reasons most of which are quite groundless. However some of the reasons have some solid facts behind the opposition to Wind Energy.Note Wind Energy unlike other forms of fossil fuel energy should have much less opposition however it is not so.Unlike Coal,Gas and Oil Energy it does not lead to increase in Greenhouse Gas Emissions and contribute to pollution. It does not lead to deaths of hundreds of miners each year nor has the danger of a catastrophic nuclear meltdown leading to death and disability of thousands. It also does not have the drawback of massive ocean pollution leading to an ecological disaster. However there are still protests against building of Wind Power Capacity and this article examines them in details. At the outset let me mention that advantages of Wind Power far outweighs the Disadvantages.

List of Major Biomass Power Plants in the World – Scale Increasing

Biomass Power Plants are increasing rapidly as the costs of fossil fuels go up and the need for renewable energy is increasing.Biomass Power is attractive because of its clean character and supplies a large portion of the energy needs in rural communities. With advancements in gasifier technology and energy conversion, biomass power plants have become quite popular.Biomass Power Plants are increasing in scale from around 20-50 MW to more than 100 MW as the technology has advanced quite a bit.The only problem for these large plants is securing feedstock for these power plants and storing them.Biomass Energy has a number of advantages over conventional forms of energy and depending on the feedstock cost can be generated at prices on par with fossil fuels.Biomass Energy also leads to higher energy security as biomass is almost always secured locally.

List of USA Solar Installers/System Integrators/EPC Companies – Massive Growth Ahead

The US is the world's largest electricity producer and consumer with a total electricity capacity of around 1 Terawatt. The share of Solar Energy in the US Electricity Production is negligible compared to around 19% for Nuclear Energy and around 2-3% for Wind Energy. However Solar Energy in the US is set to grow at high double digits over the next 2 decades as the Costs of Solar Energy Decline with prices of other Energy Forms set to rise.In some states like Hawaii and California, solar energy prices are already at grid parity with retail electricity prices. Some states like New Jersey,Colorado,Arizona have seen sharp increases in solar energy adoption over the last 2-3 years boosted by state specific government policies and subsidies. With the US Federal 30% Cash Grant on System Costs and falling systems prices for solar systems, the growth in inevitable. The US Solar Market has seen the rise of a number of innovative and fast growing system integration and installers. Some companies have come up with innovative financial solutions to solve the high initial investment hurdles in solar systems through leasing and financing plans. Here are a list of Top US Installers/System Integrators.Note the list will keep expanding in the coming years as the size of the US Solar Energy Market Grows.

SkyFuel gets a CSP Contract in the highly protected Chinese Solar Market;Other Winners First Solar,eSolar yet to begin construction

Note China's Solar Market is a highly competitive and protected one with outside solar companies hardly having any presence similar to Japan's market.First Solar which signed a massive gigawatt contract to build a plant in Ordos has seen only delays as Chinese solar manufacturers opposed the plant.First Solar is still trying to build the plant signing a new JV with one of China's 5 big utilities.eSolar another CSP company got a contract to build a plant with China but till date construction does not seem to have begun there also. The Chinese government seems mostly interested in high-tech technology (First Solar,eSolar) rather than run of the mill players.Even these technology companies have failed to make much headway.Remains to be seen whether SkyFuel Succeeds.

Solar ETF Analysis and Review- Guide to Buying (TAN,KWT)

There are only 2 Solar Energy ETFs in the Market right now - TAN and KWT.Note buying solar ETF provides a less risky way of investing in solar energy as some stocks can dramatically underperform in this fast growing industry. However Solar ETFs will on the other hand perform much worse than the best performing stocks in the solar universe. This is because their holdings are also concentrated on some of the lesser quality companies.KWT and TAN are better investments for the less informed and less sophisticated investors.Amongst the 2 ETFs,KWT is the better option than TAN for a number of reasons which are described below.
