Biomass Plants in India Shutdown as Feedstock Costs Race ahead of Prices

Biomass Plants in India are shutting down as feedstock costs have increased rapidly while government regulated electricity tariffs have yet to increase.60% of India's Biomass Plants have closed down as they are longer profitable.Note India has a massive growth target for biomass electricity capacity up from 1 GW at present (2 GW if you count cogeneration).A number of agricultural companies have set up a number of plants besides dedicated green utilities. However inflation in India has affected the operation of plants specially those who don't have inhouse feedstock supply.

Gujarat Solar Energy Developers miss Deadline with only half of 300 MW target, want an Extension

Gujarat solar energy has been massively promoted by the state government led by Modi which has announced numerous incentives and subsidies. The state has an ambition of becoming the Germany of solar energy in India with more than 1 GW of capacity in the next 2-3 years, but the solar energy developers has missed the deadline.29 solar companies in India now want an extension which add up to 450 MW of capacity. The 300 MW of capacity target has not even been half covered with only 140 MW installed. However the problem is that on Jan 29 2012 new feed in tariffs will be announced which will be lower. This will benefit the older developers if they get the older higher tariffs with much lower equipment prices. The State has already implemented a clear and forward looking Renewable Energy Policy with emphasis on Solar Energy. It has signed PPAs with a number of solar project developers under its State Solar Subsidy Scheme. While other states are looking mainly towards the federal subsidy scheme JNNSM to push Solar Energy Generation,Gujarat is looking to push Solar Energy on its own.Gujarat now has reportedly acquired 3000 acres at Charnaka village in Patan District which it will give to solar project developers to install solar panels.

Chemicals,Textile Companies enter Solar Renewable Energy in India (Kanoria,Oswal Woolen Mills)

Renewable Energy is a sunshine industry in India right now and a number of non traditional players are getting into the clean energy industry right now.Companies with surplus cash or lack of growth opportunities are turning to solar energy generation to fuel growth. The JNNSM first phase saw a large number of companies bidding and some unknown players winning the auction. While a large number of these solar companies will never their projects see the light of the day (pun intended),some will survive and thrive.More companies are getting into the solar power busness attracted by the long term potential of solar energy in the country.Kanoria Chemicals which recently sold off a large chunk of its chemical business is sitting on a huge pile of cash. The company has decided to get into renewable energy generation by setting up a 2-3 MW solar plant.Note Kanoria Chemicals has little to any relation between its core operations and solar energy.

Edible Oil Manufacturers in India – Growing Market attracts MNCs (Cargill,ConAgra) to the Mustard,SoyaOil Industry

The Indian vegetable oil economy is the fourth largest in the world after US, China & Brazil. Since 1995, India's share has been 10% of the world production of oilseeds. A wide range of oilseeds crops grow in India. Groundnut, soyabean & mustard together contribute 85% of India's oilseeds production, as per a report by Indian law office. Mustard oil is the third largest edible oil produced in the world after Soy oil and Palm oil. At a production level of 13-14 million tons, it accounts for about 12% of the total World's edible oil production. The Indian market in volume and revenue terms is quite large and has seen increasing investment from foreign players. However the margins in this industry are quite low which implies that the profitability is much lower in the Edible Oil Market in India. There are also large regional players which have strengths in their domestic turf. The Edible Oil Sector has seen a number of M&A deals in recent times as well.KS Oils which is a large player back by some of the top name PE has been in trouble in recent times due to its large debt.

National Green Tribunal (NGT) of India – What you need to Know (History,Challenges,Circuit Benches,Necessity)

India has become the third country in the world to start a National Green Tribunal (NGT) which is a judicial body exclusively meant to judge environmental cases.Note Environment has become the one of the most important issues in the country affecting the broader society.Alongwith Land Acquisition, environment has become the most frequent conflict flashpoint. There have been numerous case where large industries have been confronted by local people fighting for the environement.Recent cases like the Vedanta Bauxite smelter in Orissa,Thermal Power Plants in Andhra Pradesh, the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Plant in Maharashtra have seen huge controversy and protests.Note Vedanta Resources has found itself in the centre of controversy over mining bauxite in Niyamgiri Hills which are held sacred by the Dongria Kondh tribal group. With powerful political and bureaucratic patrons,Vedanta has managed to ride roughshod over Tribal Rights. Having a National Green Tribunal (NGT) has become essential for the country so that development can proceed with peace between various stakeholders .Note normal judges and courts don't have the expertise to understand the massive complexities and intricacies involved in billion dollar industrial projects and their impact on the environment. The NGT will have each judge having an environmental expert to guide him/her on the ecological issues so that they can come to an informed judgment.

Supreme Court becomes School Master for Corrupt Indian Government (Congress Party) – Appoints 2 Former Judge SIT (Jeevan Reddy,MB Shah) Black Money Case

India's Supreme Court took the matter of hundreds of billions of dollars of Black Money stashed into foreign bank accounts into its own hands as the government has repeatedly failed to take any action stalling the case. The Indian government led by the Congress Party has been repeatedly blasted by the Supreme Court for not acting against corruption matters.Recently the Court in an unprecedented move took over the supervision of the CBI in 2G Telecom Scandal Case Investigation.Note CBI is under the Home Ministry and like other investigations was being tardy to take action government ministers. The 2G Telecom case has resulted in top ministers and corporate CEOs being jailed with prospects of more being convicted.

India Business-Politician Nexus Intimidates Poor Tribals Selling Land cheaply for Janjgir Champa Power Plant (Videocon,Kanwar) Twist Laws

Indian Businessmen and Politicians have been looting the citizens and the treasury of billions of dollars through numerous corruption scams and scandals. While the focus has been on the big corruption scandals at the centre being perpetrated by ruling party politicians, opposition party has not been far behind. The Nira Radia Tapes revealed the extent to which the Indian politicians have sold the state to big business.Major ministers are appointed by the major industrial conglomerates leading to billions of dollars in embezzlement. There are numerous instances like the Commonwealth Games Scam,Adarsh Scam, the 2G Telecom Scam etc. Many of the politicians are now big businessmen themselves owning companies legally and illegally.According to Nira Radi,India's agricultural minister is the benami owner of one of the largest realty companies DB Realty whose CEO is cooling his heels in jail for the 2G Scam. The concerned minister is also involved in the Lavasa City Scam in which a whole city was built in partnership with HCC flouting all environmental norms and regulations.

Mandatory Ethanol Blending in India is a Dumb Idea pandering to Vested Interests (sugar industry)

The Government on India is proposing to introduce mandatory blending of ethanol in transport fuels to the extend of 5%.This means that the major transport fuel providers like IOC,BPCL and other will have to ensure that 5% of the petrol they sell will be mixed with 5% ethanol. The US is the biggest user of mandatory blending which has recently come under harsh criticism. The reasons given for supporting blending is that it reduces the requirements of fossil fuels which leads to lower carbon emissions, improves energy security and reduces pollution. However none of these advantages are seen in real life.In fact it has the massively negative consequence of increasing food prices which leads to the starvation of the poor globally. The Corn Industry in the USA has become a major lobbying force which makes the US government persist with the policy resulting in sharp increase in corn prices to the detriment of consumers.

BJP finds it hard to fight Congress on Anti-Corruption as its own Ministers(Kalia,Swarna Ram,Yeddurappa) Indulge in Land Scams

BJP,the chief opposition party in India is finding it hard to fight the ruling party's widespread corruption as its leader are too compromised in land scams of their own.The Karnataka ministers of the BJP are known to be amongst the most corrupt in the country with the CM himself indulging in land scams along with his sons. The Bellary trio of Reddy brothers have amassed billions of dollars through plundering iron ore illegally and having literally bought the government in Karnataka for the BJP with their ill-gotten wealth.Karnataka’s Chief Minister has justified corruption as tradition and despite huge pressure to resign managed to survive due to unique caste politics of India .The Supreme Court has called the corruption in India “mind boggling” while the Chief Vigilance Officer had earlier called 30% of India’s population utterly corrupt. Now the BJP's ministers in the Punjab government have been accused of land scams in the state. Two of the BJP ministers Manoranjan Kalia and Swarna Ram have been implicated in a Land deal on the outskirts of Chandigarh.Kalia holds the industries and local bodies portfolio, Ram is social welfare and justice minister.

Wind Energy in Gujarat to see Easy Electricity Connection as Wind Growth slows down

Gujarat has been leading Indian states in the Solar Energy sector signing PPAs to build more than 900 MW of power capacity in the next couple of years even as the federal subsidy JNNSM flounders.Gujarat is one of the leading industrialized states in the country and has been looking to boost renewable energy sources like Tidal Energy,Offshore Wind Energy,Geothermal Energy as well.Wind Energy has also been in the radar of the state government which is looking to realize the 10 GW potential of Wind Energy in the state. After a strong 2009 when 295 MW of Wind Power was installed that slowed down to 100 MW.The main reason was the unavailability of the power grid to connect wind power plants.Note Gujarat possesses one of the best wind sites in the country in the western part of Saurahstra.

'Regularisation of Illegality' – India's Environment Minister Helpless in Taking action against Ecological Destruction

India's environment minister Jairam Ramesh has pleaded helplessness as he is too being forced to go along with these environmental destructive projects. This is a characteristic which is peculiar to India and has allowed the culture of corruption to flourish. If you build a large enough project with enough billions in investment you can get away with the murder of the environment as the government could destroy such a large investment. These ad hoc measures which lead to construction of illegal projects has been leading to the destruction of ecology in a large scale manner.Only a blanket demolition of all structures built illegally irrespective of the cost will lead to the lessening of the corruption in the business sector.

Lavasa A Township built on Sand – How the Politics-Business Nexus Colluded to give Birth to this Environmental Disaster

Lavasa is a story of corruption, looting of the poor and raping of the surrounding environment by the Indian politician-bureaucrat-businessmen nexus in a beautiful cover of a township built for the rich and well heeled. There is little concern for the law as these powerful developers know that they can get away with murder quite literally. The long term sustainability of the township is in doubt which defeats the entire purpose anyway.Any buyer of property in Lavasa should be aware of these problems and should not buy it as their investment will be eroded in the future anyway besides having the taint of being looted from the poor. However the media too has lost interest as a new scandal emerges everyday. Lavasa Township being constructed near Pune,Maharashtra has been in the media off and on for creating a environmental disaster in the shape of a beautiful township constructed on the hills. The town which has been constructed for 300,000 residents has violated all building and environmental norms of the state and centre. With powerful politicians and businessmen backing the project, its not as surprise that the state government of Maharashtra actively helped the township in bypassing all the laws and regulations. There is no provision for permanent water supply and it would lead to a clash between the water wants of Lavasa and Pune.Note builders in India are notorious for leaving out water and waste sustainability in their plans. The residents of the buildings, apartments and other shelters have to bear the brunt later on when there is no water and problems like waterlogging.Gurgaon the millenium township suffers from both of these problems quite acutely.Note these problems are common to both million dollar homes as well as slums in India.

India Corruption Cases(2G,CWG) – Scamsters get caught, charged (Kanimozhi,Kalmadi) but will the Big Fish be netted

India has lately become a nation known for endemic corruption rather than the world's poster growth boy with the ruling party members implicated in a number of corruption scams. With the government reluctant to take action against its own,the Supreme Court was forced to take over the supervision of the investigating agency CBI.In the first chargesheet top corporate honchos and CEOs were put under arrest alongwith the former telecom minister Raja and his cronies. With the ruling party under pressure from a civil society movement against corruption, the ability to manipulate the investigation process is limited. Not that the government is not trying put impediments in the court cases and top ministers and leaders indulging in character assassination of the eminent social activists like Santosh Hedge and others. This comes even as other chief ministers of the Congress like Gehlot get caught in nepotism.

Yet Another Congress Chief Minister(Gehlot) accused of Corruption in Government Contracts

The Congress Party and its leaders can't stop being caught in corruption scams and instead of trying to correct them, they slander and character assassinate civil rights activists who try to bring about an anti-corruption bill in the country. The Adarsh Housing Scandal in which the Congress Chief Minister in Maharashtra was involved had to resign though no jail time for him or for his associates. The Scam which also involved top bureaucrats,Corrupt Indian Military Generals and other sleazy officials has died a natural media death as fresh scams take their place. Not that the Opposition party BJP is any better with its Karnataka Chief Minister failing to resign despite being accused of a number of scams.Note the Karnataka Ministry of the BJP has robber mining barons as top ministers who have made billions of dollar through illegal mining of iron ore.

Nira Radia reveals Sordid Corruption Nexus – DB Realty owned by Pawar,Tata Companies TCS,Tata Motors Bending Backwards in giving Favors to DMK Raja for Telecom License

Nira Radia the millionaire lobbyist who became a public figure overnight as tapes leaked to her phone conversations were printed by the mass media has revealed sordid details about the politician businessmen nexus. In the chargesheet presented by the CBI to the Supreme Court she has revealed the multi billion dollar realty company DB Realty is a front for Sharad Pawar and controlled by him. This hardly comes as a surprise as powerful Agri Minister Pawar has been linked to a number of corruption scandals like the Lavasa Scandal,2G Telecom Scam,IPL Scam etc.Note DB Realty CEO has been directly implicated in the transfer of bribe giving to Raja the former Telecom Minister in exchange for a Telecom License at dirt cheap prices. It is a tribute to the power of Pawar that despite such massive circumstantial evidence against him and his family, there has been no court case or police charges against him.Note a number of big companies in India are known to be secretly owned and controlled by powerful politicians. Not that politicians don't own billion dollar businesses openly and use their political muscle to further their own interests in a blatant manner.

Biomass Energy and Rice perfect partners as Electricity Costs rise in India

A number of Agricultural Companies and Green Utilities are focusing on setting up biomass plants in different places in India.Note Biomass Energy accounts for almost 20-30% of the Energy Requirements of the country and is the main source of energy for most of the rural communities for cooking and heating.Biomass Energy is best suited where Crop and Animal Residue are cheaply available. Most of India's Biomass Power Plants have been built by companies involved in agri industries particularly sugar. Now Rice Companies are finding Biomass Energy perfect for their needs as they generate huge amounts of waste Rice Husk which can be used to generate electricity for their inhouse needs as well as for sale to the power grid.Note on top of this,Rice Biomass Electricity is also eligible for Subsidies from the State Governments.Haryana is seeing a surge in Rice based Electricity Plants with 16 MW installed already.Note Haryana is one of the top agri states in India alongwith Punjab and provides a lot of potential.Note a number of Rice Companies such as Lakshmi Energy and Foods have made Biomass Electricity a key part of their growth strategies even changing their names. Here are a couple of Rice Companies with aggressive Biomass Electricity Plans.

Lokpal Bill Deal Details – Anna Hazare to End Fast as Indian Government Accepts all Demands

Anna Hazare is to end his fast unto death on April 9,5 days after starting his hunger fast demanding the implementation of a Jan Lokpal Bill to replace the toothless Lokpal Bill which has been gathering dust for the last 42 years. The massive public anger against endemic corruption in public life had made the position of the government and the ruling Congress Party extremely uncertain. After trying to defame Hazare as a RSS stooge and worse, wiser counsel seems to have prevailed.Seeing the growing popular support for this anti-corruption movement, the leaders of the Congress Party have totally capitulated to all demands made by the civil society movement.Twitter and Facebook have played an important role in galvanizing popular opinion against corruption and for Anna Hazare. It could mark a turning point for the Indian state as Corruption becomes increasingly difficult.

Tunisia's Mohamed Bouazizi was an unlikely and unknown here protesting againt the daily suffering of the high handedness of authroties while Tahrir Square in Egypt was where the regime toppled.India is still far different from those situations as there is no demand for the government to go,only for a strict anti-corruption law. However Anna Hazare and Jantar Mantar have the ability to become far more than simple a protest on Lokpal Bill.It could be the tide which washes away the abject helplessness of Indians over the corruption of the powerful and rich. Here is a short excerpt of Jantar Mantar and about Anna Hazare

Indian Government puts Hurdles in 2G Telecom Case Fails as Supreme Court orders Daily Hearings from April 13,Second Chargesheet on April 24

The Government of India has been trying to put hurdles in the 2G Telecom Scam case right from Day 1.Its blatant shielding of the rich and powerful involved in the massive billion dollar corruption involving ruling party alliance members and top corporate houses has been apparent. The proof of the government malintentions was India's top court taking over the supervision of the investigation agency CBI with itself. This was a major slap for the government as CBI falls under the authority of the Home Ministry. With the CBI having filed a chargesheet which names the former Telecom Minister Raja and some billionaire businessmen, the government is again trying its stalling tactics. The government and its repsentative lawyers did not agree to the name of U U Lalit as special public prosecutor.Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Indira Jaising raised objections despite K K Venugopal, who has been appearing on behalf of CBI and ED suggesting his name.

Anna Hazare who is fasting unto death in the capital of India has called for Indian citizens for fill jails on April 12 as the government has refused to key demands in the formation of the Committee to write the LokPal Bill. With millions supporting Anna Hazare's agitation against corruption amongt public officials in India, the ruling Congress Party is under tremendous pressure. However it is trying to wiggle out of this situation by making token concessions like giving half of the committee to civil society but refusing to give it "Official Notification" and not giving the chairmanship as well.

Democracy Wins – Indian Government Capitulates to Septuagenarian Hazare after 3 days of Death Fast – 1.5 kgs Lost,Support of Millions Gained

Seeing the rapidly mounting support for the movement, the government has tried to cut losses sending ministers to hold talks on ending the fast.Thousands of schoolchildren, executives, college students has spontaneously joined the Anti-Corruption Movement at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and millions more in different cities across India. It was the first real chance to protest against the endemic corruption and brazen arrogant behaviour of the ruling classes. Many politicians sensing the wind were trying to associate with Hazare.Shashi Tharoor the sauve face of modern India who had been discredited by his unethical conduct in IPL too tweeted that he supported Hazare ( don't know what that means, use your position to gain money unethically in IPL and Commonwealth Scams and support anti-corruption).For now its a success for the Indian democracy but the ultimate success will be when a strong Lokpal Bill is passed.

Anna Hazare the eminent social activist fast unto death may become a major turing point in India's history with massive spontaneous support for the Jan Lokpal Bill drafted by respected members of the Civil Society. The Ruling Congress Party which tried to disparage Hazare through usual political stunts like calling him a Opposition Party Puppet has become unhinged in its respone. While 2 days ago,the Congress Spokesperson Tewari was saying that they did not really care about the hunger fast by Hazare, now the Congress Ministers are rushing to placate him. While Kapil Sibal is calling for more time ( don't know what they did for the last one year when one after another scam was revealed),Moily says that changes will be incorporated.

Jan LokPal Bill – Summary and Guide to India's Civil Society Anti-Corruption Bill Deserves Our Support

The Jan LokPal Bill is supposed to be the answer to India's massive endemic corruption which strikes daily in the form of a new scam or scandal. The government has proven to be woefully inadequate in taking on the corrupt politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen. This corrupt nexus has been repeatedly exposed and its structure exposed through the Nira Radia Tapes. The Indian administration has shamefully failed to take action only promising to do something without doing anything worthwhile. The Indian Judiciary has also castigated the government numerous times for its abject failure in the 2G Telecom Scam,Black Money Scandal etc. However the government instead of strengthening anti-corruption measures has only put obstacles in the way.Its no wonder when the committee meant to look after the Bill comprises of ministers tainted with a number of scams themselves.Anna Hazare has held a fast unto death to put pressure on the government to pass the draft bill but the Minister appear unconcerned. Here is a short summary and guide to the main points of the Jan LokPal Bill which IMHO deserves the support of the whole Indian civil society.

Green Companies in India – Biomass,Solar,Wind,Geothermal,Hydroelectricity Energy Producers,Alternative Energy Utilities

India's Green Companies are seeing tremendous growth backed by the nation's massive energy demand increase. The 8% Plus Economic Growth coupled with the already massive electricity deficit which makes brownouts of 8 hours a day normal in many places in the country provides the macro background underpinning the growth.India's Green Industry is still in a nascent state compared to the massive solar and wind industries in countries like China and Germany. However attracted by the massive potential a number of companies small and large have entered the fray. Most of India's large energy groups, utilities have already established a small presence or are in process of doing so.While Wind Energy is the largest Renewable Energy Industry in India after HydroElectricity,Geothermal Energy is non-existent without a single large commercial plant.Biomass Energy is quite well developed and Solar Energy is the fastest growing Green Industry. Here is a comprehensive list of the Green Companies in India operating in the different Alternative Energy Sectors.
