As I was writing in my earlier post , consolidation in the technology market is creating Technology Behemoths competing in large parts of the technology spectrum.Microsoft is entering the smartphone market with Kin to counter its prime competitor Google which recently launched the NexusOne. It will also go head to head with Apple another one of its competitors in the MP3 player and PC market .Its interesting that Microsoft is launching smartphones to protect its turf in other technology areas . The Technology War between these Behemoths is now being fought on multiple levels and segments. The smartphone market is seeing the largest number of players fighting it out for consumer mind share .The list has every major technology company – HP,RIMM,Apple,HTC,Nokia,Motorola,Sony Ericsson,Google,Microsoft,Dell,Acer .Wondering when IBM and Oracle will join in?
Microsoft Corp. will start selling its Kin mobile phones online tomorrow with Verizon Wireless, the biggest U.S. mobile-phone carrier, as the software company tries to take back ground in the fast-growing smartphone market.
The Kin One will sell for $49.99 after a $100 rebate and a two-year service contract, the companies said in a statement. The Kin Two, with a larger screen and higher-resolution camera, will cost $99.99. Both phones go on sale in stores on May 13.
Microsoft is aiming to use the phones to regain momentum against Google Inc. and Apple Inc. in the smartphone market. Devices running Microsoft’s Windows operating system fell to 7.9 percent of the worldwide smartphone market in the fourth quarter, down from 12.5 percent a year earlier, according to ABI Research. Apple’s iPhone and phones using Google’s Android software gained, passing Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft.
The Kin phones are aimed at young mobile-phone users who like to stay in touch with social networks. Customers will listen to music through Microsoft’s Zune system and must sign up for a Windows Live account to set up the device.
