The sun is shining bright on Delhi, and it’s not just the weather! The Delhi government’s recently launched Solar Policy 2024 is making headlines for all the right reasons. This ambitious policy aims to transform the capital into a solar city, reaping benefits for residents, the environment, and the power grid. With the new policy, the government aims to supercharge Delhi’s solar power usage. They’re setting an ambitious target to triple capacity from the current 1,500 MW to a whopping 4,500 MW by March 2027. That’s enough solar energy to meet roughly 20% of the city’s power needs!
Zeroing in on Free Electricity
Imagine this: slashing your electricity bill to zero. That’s the dream the policy offers to Delhiites who consume up to 400 units of electricity per month. By installing rooftop solar panels residents can generate clean energy, significantly reducing their dependence on the grid.
Subsidies and Incentives Galore
But that’s not all. The policy sweetens the deal with attractive financial benefits. The government is offering a capital subsidy of Rs 2,000 per kW for installation, up to a maximum of Rs 10,000 per consumer. A typical 2KW solar installation costs around Rs.90,000 which could come to Rs. 86,000 with the subsidy. This comes on top of any subsidies offered by the central government.
Power Up and Earn
Here’s where it gets even more interesting. The policy introduces a generation-based incentive (GBI). Residents who install solar panels will earn Rs 3 per unit of electricity generated for plants up to 3 kW, and Rs 2 per unit for larger ones (between 3 and 10 kW). This amount will be credited to their bank accounts for five years, further offsetting electricity bills and even generating a potential profit.
Building a Solar Future
The Delhi Solar Policy isn’t just about individual homes. The government is mandating the installation of solar panels on all government buildings with a suitable rooftop area. This sets a strong example and paves the way for a solar-powered future for the city.

Finding the Light: How to Get Started
The policy is still in its early stages, and the official portal with detailed information is under development. However, news reports suggest residents can contact their local DISCOM (power distribution company) to learn more about the application process and eligible vendors for solar panel installation.
A Brighter Tomorrow
The Delhi Solar Policy 2024 is a game-changer. It empowers residents to take charge of their energy consumption, save money, and contribute to a cleaner environment. By embracing solar power, Delhi can illuminate a path towards a sustainable future. So, what are you waiting for? Let the sunshine into your life and become a part of Delhi’s solar revolution!
