India’ Power Situation is anything but funny with a mounting and growing power deficit leading to a sharp drop in industrial productivity. India’s Power Industry is in the most severe crisis since the sector was reformed and private power sector companies were allowed. India’s electricity companies which were considered as a great investment with fancied valuations have now found the going tough. A number of factors have converged to make the electricity industry go into the crisis mode. India’s electricity woes have been discussed numerous times in Greenworldinvestor and the biggest power blackout has highlighted India’s energy crisis to the entire world.
However the Government continues to do nothing much except for some really funny solutions. India’s southern state of Kerala is soon going to see a cycle rally led by the power minister of the state. The rally is being done to raise awareness about energy conservation. While increasing awareness is not bad, one would think that India’s minister would find better ways to spend his energy by trying to think of augmenting electricity capacity. Politicians in India find it more convenient to indulge in short term theatrics rather than working for long term practical solutions.

Minister for Power Aryadan Mohammed has exhorted the people to conserve electricity and help the State deal with an acute crisis. He said this while flagging off a cycle rally for ‘energy conservation awareness’, from the Press Club here on Monday. The country as a whole required to generate incremental one lakh megawatts to make good the peak-hour shortage. While the State Government is trying its best to overcome the crisis here, the Minister appealed to the public to back it up with a conscious effort to reduce power consumption in homes.
The industry in other southern states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh too have been crying themselves hoarse as they face power brownouts for days together.
The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has decided to move the Madras High Court seeking relief from power cuts, affecting the southern districts with load shedding of 12-16 hours each day. It proposes to plead for equitable distribution of available power across the State and seek a direction to the authorities to provide at least eight hours of continuous power supply every day, besides halting the night-time power cuts.
In Andhra Pradesh, industry is trying to figure out how to manage with just four days of power a week. A three-day a week power holiday for industrial units began this week to cope with the huge gap in demand and supply that has been exacerbated over the last several weeks. The government says that this is an unprecedented crisis caused by not enough water in reservoirs because of erratic rainfall that hit hydel production and poor gas supply that snuffed the gas-based power plants.
