Solar energy is not only powering our homes, shops, and industries but is also proving to be of immense importance in matters of national security. Solar power is increasingly being used by the Border Security Force. BSF posts in Sri Ganganagar district along the Indo-Pak border have installed these solar systems.
Jawans at the border will use solar energy to recharge their communication and safety gear, which will save nearly 4-5 km of travel to the base camps for getting their gadgets charged. A 1.5 kW solar system is used at each of these posts. The solar system consists of a solar inverter and 500 W solar panels and batteries which provides enough energy to power lights and fans in each of these locations. Leading solar battery company, Su-Kam has done the installation. Wireless systems and mobile phones can also be charged.
One of the major disadvantages of using solar power is the intermittency issue, which can be addressed to a large extent by using batteries. These batteries store the excess power which can be used for later use at nightfall. Soldiers can utilize the saved travel time focusing on other important issues or simply relax. Solar is increasingly being used in rural parts where grid connectivity is an issue and has been a major driver in uplifting peoples’ lives. It is also being used in far off areas where transmission infrastructure is not well developed.
