Green Energy Projects in India preferred by Debt Syndicators over Thermal Power

power projects.See below for the problems besetting India's thermal power project developers.Note wind and solar power projects are seeing more interent from debt syndication lenders like IDFC,IL&FS because of 2 reasons a) Strong support from state and federal governments which are going all out to support Renewable Energy through tax breaks, feed in tariffs, capital subsidy b) Secure Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) by NVVN at even higher prices for green energy c) No problems of fuel supply availability that plagues the coal and gas power plants in India d) Lesser Environmental issues that beset the Coal Power and Nuclear Power Plants in India with local agitations e) Land Acquisitions problems are also lower as solar and wind power plants don't require prime land

Solar Energy in Germany Explodes in December, may reach monstrous ~3 GW, another record breaking 2011

The German Solar Energy Market is biggest in the world and has installed the largest number of solar panels for the last few years.2012 promises to be no different with Germany again set to the biggest solar market for solar panel manufacturers though Italy would give good competition. The German Solar Subsidy program has been the best in the world unlike the start and stop feed in tariff programs of Spain,Czech,UK,Australia and other places.A stable step in cut of feed in tariffs has helped solar energy prices coming down by more than 50% in the last few years though demand has only increased.

India's biggest solar farm/ installation of 40 MW completed in Kutch- What we need is Net Metering

Note the Indian solar projects are growing continuously and with the possible additoin of 1000 mw of solar energy in 2012 we will see much larger solar installations with 100 MW solar farms being planned.Besides solar thermal power plants are bigger in size in general. While the growth of big solar installations is good, India really needs to move to rooftop small solar installations and off grid solar promotion.

LDK and Sunpower would have been in Chapter 11 without China and Total Support

LDK Solar is one of the most insolvent companies in the world right now with billions of dollars in debt,a battered balance sheet, continuing losses and dodgy accounting. However LDK has acquired a German company Sunways and continues to build new solar power plants as the Chinese state owned banks continue to fund it with cheap money without any consideration about losing their investments.LDK has become the poster boy of the Solarworld complaint against Chinese solar panel producers as it continues to run and thrive despite being insolvent. The Chinese government is hurting itself and its other solar companies like Trina,Yingle which are more competitive by continuing to support and increase the global glut of cheap solar panels. These solar panels are being clearly sold at below cost as most of the companies would be bankrupt without these absurd loans which make no free market sense

Vestas faces Death Knell/ Consolidation aka First Solar from Price War by Chinese Wind Turbine Producers

Chinese Wind Turbine Companies have unleashed a global price war in which Western producers are unable to compete. While Solar Panel producers in the West are dying like flies,Western WTG Makers too face survival questions.Vestas which is the world's biggest turbine company in terms of installations announced another revenue shortfall for the nth time in the last couple of years. The company has already restructed ,reduce workforce etc etc. However the price competition from the Asian companies is too severe and too sustained for Vestas to surive too long.Like First Solar,Vestas seems a likely candidate for takeover by one of the big industrial conglomerates. It has become too tough for a renewable energy company in the West to survive on their own.

Adani Power to set up 140 MW Solar PV Capacity in India even as it looks to grow in Africa

Adani Power, which is a leading Indian electricity company and part of the Adani Group is set to invest big money in the solar power in India. The company plans to set up 140 MW of energy capacity according to news reports with an investment of $600 million.Given the current costs of solar equipment and solar panels ,the price tag looks high at almost $3.5 million/MW when the current prices are more like $2 million/MW for large power plants in low cost locations like India.

NVVN to sign PPA with Indian JNNSM Phase 2 Winners for 350 MW Solar Plants in Jan 2012

JNNSM Phase 2 recieved almsot 8 times the bids with 2500 MW worth of bids out of which around 350 MW was selected for providing Feed in Tarifffs with the average tariff of Rs 8.77 or 17.5c/Kwh .Note India's execution record has not been great with only 400 MW solar capacity reached in 2011 against a target of more than 1000 MW.However weaker and unknown players have gone out of this business and the winners this time look more likely to construct these solar power plants. No doubt a massive glut of solar panels in the world with prices as low as 80-90c/watt helping .Compare that to prices of solar panels which were more than $2/watt last time.

India's Power Industry caught in Coal Crisis – Revival through Shorter PPA, Fuel Cost Tariff Indexation

This new plan has following features 1) Reduce the Power Purchasing Agreement Tenure to 5 years from 25 years. This would make it easy to change the prices of power purchased to reflect the changed realities 2) Some sort of fuel cost indexation for electricity tariffs .The reason is that prices of imported coal has risen dramatically which has made the large UMPP get stuck because the revenues don't meet the costs. This plan will take 6 months to be implemented as the government talks with stakeholders like states which are reluctant to change the power prices decided in the PPA with the earlier UMPP being built by Tata Power and Reliance Power in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.

India Faces Dark Summer in 2012 with Prices Spiral,Fuel Shortages,Local Agitation,Producer Losses

India faces a Long and Dark Summer in 2012 with its Electricity Industry in Shambles. The list of woes is almost non-ending and the government is the biggest culprit.Locked in a policy paralysis due to its corruption taint, the authorities have failed to move.Indian Electricity Companies too are facing losses and may even default on some project debt. The state distribution companies already have racked up billion of dollar in losses due to total mismanagement of tariffs and power theft. So the whole supply chain is in trouble with the Indian Banks also in trouble as they have lent billions to the power producers.

What will be India's Solar Power Capacity in 2012 after 400 MW in 2011

Solar Power in India has been growing at a rapid clip due to a number of favorable factors 1) Big Energy Deficit 2) Lots of Sulight 3) Falling prices of Solar Panels 4) Favorable government subsidies. Indian Solar Power Capacity in 2012 Many of the small firms have been weeded out and the developers and banks have got some experience in this new solar industry.Expect 2012 to be much better and expect at leas a doubling of the solar power capacity as both phase 1 and phase 2 winners in JNNSM complete projects.Rajasthan,Gujarat and Karnataka state subsidies should also see some projects being complted Solar Power Capacity in India in 2012 should be around 1 GW which is not bad and will make it one of the top 10 Solar Markets in the world.

Can Ladakh the Cold Desert become India's Solar Desterec – Massive Benefits

Ladakh, one of the most beautiful hilly regions lying near the Chinese border has one of the highest potentials in generating solar power in India.Note under JNNSM,India is targeting more than 20 GW in the next 10 years and already large solar farms are coming in the desert areas of Rajasthan and Gujarat. However,Indian policy has mostly neglected the less inhabited region of Ladakh. Most of the policy initiatives have been low key in nature and mostly to provide the region with off grid solar power, solar cookers and solar lights. What has been missed is to build massive solar panel farms and connecting them with a transmission line to the power hungry states of the North.Just like Himachal Pradesh has become a masssive hydro power exporting state,Ladakh can do the same trick with solar power. Solar Panel prices have fallen by 50% in 2011 and now solar energy can be profitably be generate at Rs 7/kwh.While this is more expensive than coal at Rs 4/kwh,the thing to be remembered is that this power value is constant for 25 years and it has no coal disadvantages which kills thousands each year. Also it increases Indias 'energy security and reduce imports of expensive coal.It also will provide more employment and generate economic value internally beside supporting the Indian construction and EPC companies.

GlobalWatt bails out of constructing a Solar Panel Plant in Michigan – Not Surprising

The Chinese solar panel producers too are facing tough times with many companies running at low utilizations and almost everybody running losses. Some companies with huge debt burdens like LDK are running because of government largesse as they are effectively insolvent for all purposes.Expect more bankrutpcies in the coming year .It will take a very foolish or a very brave company to expand solar capacity this year. Only USA Solar Installers are having a good time with below cost solar panels availabe increasing the returns and leading to massive increased. It looks like 2012 will be a good year for US solar installers who are expanding rapidly to take advantage of the falling solar module prices.Even Buffett is going all into solar development space acquiring billion dollar project in a classical case of vulture investing.

Sharp Solar Modules (Silicon,Thin Film) – All that is to Know

Sharp is the largest solar company in the world by revenues and has been so for the last few years despite massively increasing competition from Chinese Solar Panel Producers. While other Japanese conglomerates like Sanyo,Mitsubishi and Kyocera have substantially lost solar panel marketshare ,Sharp has managed to retain its leadership position.Though companies like First Solar and Suntech have shipped more solar modules than Sharp,in terms of total dollar sales Sharp is still on top.Sharp which used to make polycrystalline and monocrystalline silicon solar panels has diversified into producing thin film amorphous silicon solar panels. The company has also entered the solar IPP and solar development business in collaboration with Enel Green Power and by acquiring a US Solar Developer Recurrent Energy. However in core solar panel production,Sharp has much higher costs and has lost money consistently.Sharp sells Solar Systems and Solar Inverters as well as Solar Modules. However the challenges in the solar market are considerable with well funded low cost competitors from China and South Korea.Sharp faces the toughest years of its solar history as it fights to survive in this cut throat Solar Market

Nuclear Energy Companies,Stocks to Invest In Complete List (Utility,Reactor,Waste,Uranium)

Nuclear Power has come under assault in the aftermath of the Fukushima Nuclear Accident with Nuclear becoming a four letter word. However Nuclear Energy cannot be ignored because its nuclear energy uses are unique in some applications and cannot be substituted by any other means.Nuclear Energy is responsible for generating almost 1/6th of the global production of electricity with Developed Countries like Japan,Europe and USA having 20% or more of their electricity being generated by Nuclear Fission.Currently 31 countries in the world have nuclear reactors producing electricity. The total installed nuclear generating capacity in the world is around 375 GW (WNA) with another 170 GW in planning g state and another 170 GW being proposed.Despite the massive opposition that nuclear power has run into, nuclear companies and nuclear power stocks are not going away soon. This is because of the massive installed base and the nuclear plans of emerging countries. For example Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia,UAE are going ahead with their nuclear power plans as are countries like India and Vietnam.

Sunlink Solar Panels Review of Prices,Manufacturers and Comparison

Sunlink Solar Panels are manufactured by a small company Jiangsu Sunlink PV Technology Co,.Ltd based out of China with module production capacity of 200MW.Note there are many Chinese companies of this size and a major shakeout is occuring in the industry with a number of smaller companies shutting down their production solar panel lines as prices have gone down by 40% amidst a solar module inventory glut. Some US based solar panel producers like Evergreen and Solyndra have gone out of business and many others are on the verge like Arisa Technologies.SunLink PVwas founded in 2004 and they sell 5W to 300W both monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels. They have IEC61215 Ed.2, IEC61730, UL1703 certificates.

REC Solar Panels,Modules Review of Sale Prices,Specs (Recall in 2008)

Renewable Energy Corporation (REC ) is one of the biggest European solar companies and is completely vertically integrated. What that means is that REC makes all the components in the crystalline silicon supply chain from polysilicon to wafers to cells and modules.REC was earlier primarily a polysilicon and wafer producer but it is not becoming more active in the solar panels area.REC Silicon and REC Wafer are among the world's largest producers of polysilicon and wafers, respectively, for solar applications. This is the reason that REC solar panels are in general cheaper than other European and Japanese solar panels like Solarworld,Sharp,Kyocera and others.Due to the high cost of production,REC has shut down its factories in Norway and is mainly producing solar cells and solar modules at its new solar complex in Singapore.REC Solar has production facilities around the globe but it is concentrating its production in Asian factories.Despite stiff competition from Chinese solar panels which has led to bankruptcy of numerous solar companies in the West,REC is well capitalized and should be one of the survivors of the current solar price wars.As such the warranty on the solar panels from REC should hold good for the 25 years.

JA Solar Panels Review of Company,Prices,Comparision – Are they any Good

JA Solar is the biggest solar cell producer in the world with more than 2000 MW of silicon cell capacity. The company has one of the lowest costs in processing of solar cells from solar wafers. The company is primarily a supplier of solar cells to most solar panel producers in Europe and Asia. However the sharp fall in solar panel prices in 2011 has resulted in most of the European companies shutting shop which has meant that JA Solar has faced a large loss in customer orders for its solar cells.Unlike its peer Trina and Yingli Solar,JA Solar does not have a good brand name or distribution of solar panels. It is more of a upstream supplier of solar products to solar comapnies rather than a end distributor of solar panels.JA Solar has diversified into making solar panels of its own and in partnership with other companies.Having a strong presence in the end market has become essential to survive in the cutthroad solar market.

Solar Power Plants in USA (Photovoltaic,Thermal) – Growing by the Day

Solar Power Plants in the USA are proliferating with the falling cost of solar energy and the increase in government support through the Treasury Grant subsidy.Thousands of Solar Jobs are being created in the USA as solar installers increase their workforce to cope with the rapid surge in demand. The crash in prices of solar panels has led to increase in demand for solar system installations. Also the state Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) laws which make it mandatory for utilities to source a portion of their power from green energy sources has boosted the use of solar energy.Besides rooftop solar systems, large solar power plants are being built in the USA comprising of millions of solar panels with the help of DOE loan guarantees and 1603 Grants. Not only solar photovoltaic systems, but also solar thermal power plants which use solar heat to generate power are being built.Though some of the solar thermal power plants are now being converted to solar panel power farms due to their lower costs, still some solar thermal companies like Brightsource Energy continue to build massive solar farms. The list of solar power plants in the US is a constantly moving target but here is a list of the major solar power plants in the USA as well as some of the upcoming large solar power plants.Note this list is subjective as you can't have a strict rule of solar system size to classify it a solar power plant. Also the huge number of solar installations makes it almost impossible to construct an exhaustive list of solar power plants. Here I am writing about the big solar power developers and their plans on developing large solar power plants. There are a number of smaller solar developers which I have not written about here.

Solar Panels Made in USA – Which Photovoltaic Modules have Buy American certification

Solar Panels have recently become a point of trade friction between USA and China as a massive oversupply of solar panels has resulted in the prices of solar panels dropping by almost 50% in one year. This has caused great distress amongst solar panel manufacturers in the USA particularly the high cost ones which have been forced to close.Falling prices of solar panels are great news for customers but bad news for the producers of these solar panels. Now US and European companies are selling their solar panels advertising their "made in USA" credentials. This is to help them sell the solar panels which cost more but according to them have better quality and appeal to the patriotism of the Americans.Note the 2009 Economic Stimulus which promoted renewable energy had in fact "Buy American" provisions as well as the defense law passed in 2011.This means that a small part of the solar market is reserved for US Solar Panel Manufacturers who are being besieged by the low cost Chinese solar panel producers around the world. In fact Photovoltaic Module player Solarworld (which is German) is spearheading an effort to pass anti-dumping duties against the import of Chinese based panels. So which companies have "Made in USA" label. The surprising thing is that many of the solar companies are in fact foreign mostly European and Japanese though there are a native US companies as well.Note the most successful US Solar Companies First Solar and Sunpower (now Total) have always had the majority of their production outside the US in Asia.

Benefits of Nuclear Energy for World Environment – For and Against

Nuclear Energy has become a hugely contorversial topic after the Fukushima incident in Japan where a nuclear disaster took place because of the earthquake and tsunami. Both the pro and anti nuclear groups have come out with strident arguments for and against nuclear energy. However in some countries like Germany,Switzerland the anti nuclear sentiment has gained so much support that they have decided to permanently end nuclear electricity generation despite the high costs. Before this nuclear based power was gaining ascendancy leading many to call it a nuclear renaissance as countries like China and India made plans to increase their nuclear power plant capacities massively. But the nuclear accident has thrown a spanner in the works with huge protests being seen in India and China despite its authoritarianism also slowing down its nuclear expansion plans.

BYD Solar Panels (240w) Review and Comparison of Efficiency plus Specifications

BYD is China’s biggest producer of Electric Vehicles and Lithium Ion batteries. The Company was made famous when Warren Buffet bought a 10% stake in the company, one of his biggest Foreign Investments.China has become the dominant leader in Solar Manufacturing from being an nobody in a short span of 5 years.Chinese producers are going to produce about 60% of the global supply this year led by companies like Solarfun,Trina Solar,Yingli Green and Suntech.BYD too has decided to throw its hat into the ring with a big bang investment. There remain little details about the $3.3 Billion Solar Investment over 5 years for which it has already gotten the financing. The company is planning to spend 22.5 Billion Yuan on Solar Energy over the next 5 years for which it has already secured financing. The company has started a 100 MW cell plant in the Shaanxi province and plans to expand to 5000 MW by 2015.BYD signed a $300 million polysilicon supply contract with LDK Solar (another Chinese solar producer). This is a huge supply contract considering the 2 year time frame.Though wafer and polysilicon prices have recently become slightly constrained recently, there is no scope for the massive shortages seen in 2008.

Petra Solar – Review of Company Business Model,Panels (Sunwave AC Systems),When will the Stock be Listed

Petra Solar Inc is a US Company that has an innovative marketing model to install solar panels.Like floating solar panels and solar carports,Petra Solar has taken a new unique approach to increase the penetration of solar panels. It deploys solar panels on utility poles instead of ground mounted free standing solar panels or rooftop installations. The company mainly signs deals with electric utilities instead of regular distribtution channels through solar integrators or installers who then put solar panel of the roofs of houses. This reduces the marketing costs for the company has let it carve out a niche in the super competitive solar market which has recently seen the exit of many solar companies.Petra Solar is now expanding into the Middle Eastern markets after the USA.The company recently bought Jordan-based EnergyFlow Consulting LLC

Advantages and Disadvantages of Solar Thermal Energy (Power Towers,Parabolic Troughs)

Solar Thermal Energy has been losing out in the last couple of years to solar photovoltaic energy which is seeing a huge increase in demand amidst very low prices. Some of the major solar thermal energy projects in the globe have been converted into solar pv installations due to its lower costs. Some of the major solar thermal energy companies like Solar Millennium have sold their solar thermal portfolios to other companies while Stirling Power Systems has gone bankrupt.Tessera has sold its solar thermal plants which had gotten DOE Loan Guarantees in California to Solar Developers who have made these solar thermal plants into solar panel ones. However there are some companies like eSolar and Brightsource Energy which are powering ahead with their technologies and projects with backing from big industrial MNC conglomerates like GE and Areva.Their Power Tower Technologies are supposedly more efficient than the mainstream parabolic toughs that are used.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Natural Gas Energy – Pros and Cons of Gas Usage

Natural Gas has got a lot of press these days as massive discoveries of natural gas reserves in shale gas formations has meant that the prices have gone down substanitally and new power plants and infrastructure is being developed to use natural gas as fuel.Even as crude oil and coal prices have gone through the roof, natural gas prices have dived. This is due to the new technology being commercialized which is allowing huge shale gas deposits to be used. This has led to forecasts that natural gas will become a more important part of the energy mix in the coming days. The falling prices of natural gas has also led to declining electricity prices in the USA where shale gas development is the most advanced.Natural Gas prices have gone down to as low as $3.5/mmbtu from $8 in 2008 and experts predict that it may go down to $2.5/mmbtu.Shale Gas has its own critics who say that the shale gas deposits are much lower than being said and they deplete much faster.Environmental concerns are also being raised about the fact that it leads to poisoning of the water supplies with France banning shale gas mining completely.Natural Gas is a byproduct of Oil Drilling and in the earlier days it used to be looked upon as an irritant and burned off.But now it is being used to generate power,in chemical and fertilizer plants and also being used in some parts of power vehicles as well.Natural Gas is also used for Heating in most western developed countries and for Cooking as well. With increasing availability it is replacing coal and oil in power plants and transport now.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Oil – Cons Disregarded by Powerful Lobbies

Oil is one of the most important commodities in the world playing an important part in some of the biggest industries like chemicals, transport, power, petrochemicals etc.The high energy density and easy availability have made mankind almost completely dependent on oil for most of his needs.Almost all of the world's cars run on petrol /gasoline which is derived from crude oil.Despite new evidence that burning oil leads to massive pollution and greenhouse warming nothing had been done to prevent its usage growth. In fact each year billions of barrels of oil are burned to power cars, ships, trains etc. Some countries use oil to power electricity as well though that has been decreasing as oil prices have increased substantially in recent years. The massive oil dependency has been decried by politicians for a long time but little has been done to reduce it.Powerful oil lobbies run by massive industrial conglomerates like Exxon,Chevron,BP etc. have managed to kill legislation which would reduce the subsidies to the fossil fuel industry. The BP Oil Spill after creating a massive hue and cry has faded from the public mind and its now business as usual for the Oil Industry. The only way Oil usage can be reduced it seems is when the world runs out of oil and the prices become too high for most people to use it.

Wave Energy Pros and Cons – Tidal and Ocean Wave Power Still Niche Technologies

Wave Energy is one of the niche renewable energy technologies which is still in its infancy stage. While other forms of alternative energy like solar, wind and biomass see hundreds of billions of dollars in investment each year, wave energy does not see even $1 billion in investment. This is because Wave Energy is still much behind in the technology curve in terms of costs and reliability. Also there are many varied approaches and technologies to harness the power of the ocean waves. However developed countries like UK are promoting this renewable energy since it has huge potential like solar and wind energy.Given the energy shortages that we are facing,we need to promote all forms of sustainable green energy and wave energy definitely has strong promise. Here we present the various pros and cons of wave energy

Nuclear Power cost in Kilowatt Hour (kwh) and Comparison Nucler Energy vs Coal Energy cost

Nuclear Power like other forms of Energy cannot be defined by a single cost as nuclear power plants differ in their technology and sources of fuel.No two power plants can have the same cost of electricity production similarly nuclear energy plants cannot have the same kilowatt hour cost. However nuclear energy is known for its very low costs of 2-3c/kilowatt hour which can only be currently be met by coal. But nuclear energy cost is based on older nuclear power plants which have already been depreciated. This cost is also controversial as the costs of nuclear waste storage is generally not included.USA and Japan which are the largest nuclear power producers have not constructed permanent nuclear waste storage sites despite accumulating thousands of tons of nuclear waste. Also these days extra safety measures are being taken due to the Fukushima disaster which means that the costs of nuclear energy is going up.
