6 Advantages and 6 Disadvantages of Mutual Funds vs ETFs – Why Mutual Funds are a Bad Investment

Mutual Funds are one of the most common ways to invest in equity and debt and a large mutual fund industry is involved in this endeavour. There are large number of high paying professions in Wall Street which depend on the mutual fund industry which include stock brokers and sales persons. However the amount of cost of mutual funds is not proportionate to the gains they give out. This is the reason that Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and passive funds which have lower expense ratios and expenses are gaining billions of dollars in money. The reason is that a large number of mutual funds regularly underperform the benchmarks. This has caused massive heartburn amongst investors who have to pay large amounts of fees for the services of the professional fund managers. This has been the trend historically and found amongst numerous countries as well.Besides the costs of the sales and distribution of these mutual fund with their hefty commissions also falls on the investor ultimately. However the prevailing custom of investing in mutual funds is not easily broken despite the underperformance of the mutual fund industry. Most of the advantages of mutual fund can now be found in ETFs which have much lower costs. They also remove the disadvantages such as the possibility of a bad mutual fund manager.

Greek Debt Deal – Bondholders take 50% Loss- Who Wins and Loses

According to reports coming from Europe where the summit of major European leaders took place to resolve the growing debt crisis,a deal has been reached on Greek debt. The Euro 350 billion debt which dwarfs the size of the negatively growing Greek economy has been a major source of instability in the last 2 years. The private holders of the Greek government bonds have agreed to take a 50% writeoff on their holdings. This means that if they hold Euro 100 of bonds they have become Euro 50 now as the rest has been written off as bad debt. Not that it was not apparent as Greek CDS and Greek bonds were touching all times lows in the secondary market. In fact the only buyers of Greece bonds were the European Central Bank and the Greek banks. The capital markets had been going up in the last month in the hope of some sort of resolution. The deal does not look like a win win as there will be some big losers in this deal (though they were already losing for some time).Nicolas Sarkozy announced the deal which would be voluntary in nature so that the CDS would not be invoked. Here are the winners and losers from this deal

Finance Companies in India -List of Infrastructure,Housing,Gold,Transport Finance Institutions,Banks and Insurers

The Indian Financial Companies were subject to strict regulations till 1991 when interest rates were administered and asset allocation was governed through various formal mechanisms and strict controls limited the entry of financial companies. In 1991, the government of India initiated a reform programme for India, which encompassed the financial sector. There were numerous reforms that were intitiated which has led to the emergence of a robust financial sector which easily managed to sidestep the post Lehman global financial crisis in 2008.The post 1991 reforms allowed the deregulation of interest rates, entry of new private sector banks permitted long-term lending institutions like ICICI,IDBI,HDFC to carry out banking activities. The banking sector in India has become increasingly more competitive in recent years. Public sector banks have lost their market share to the more dynamic private sector banks .It is not possible to list out all the Finance Companies in India in one post as there are almost 13000 non-bank finance companies (NBFCs) besides Banks,Insurance Companies,Foreign Financial Institutions etc. This post lists out the Financial Companies in the Gold Finance,Travel,Housing,Infra sectors as well as the Top 10 Banks.

Infrastructure Finance Companies of India – Sources of Financing of Indian Infra Projects (IDFC,IL&FS,IFCI,PFC,REC)

At the time of independence in 1947, India's capital market was relatively under-developed. Although there was significant demand for new capital, there was a dearth of providers. Merchant bankers and underwriting firms were almost non-existent. And commercial banks were not equipped to provide long-term industrial finance in any significant manner. By the early 1990s, it was recognized that there was need for greater flexibility to respond to the changing financial system. There was a need for these financial institutions to directly access the capital markets for their funds needs. So a number of infrastructure finance companies were set up.Some of them have become fully private like ICICI while others have been partly privatized. like REC and PFC.Besides a number of private companies have recently become big players in the infrastructure financing space like SREI,L&T Finance etc.Note with almost $1 trillion expected to be spent on infrastructure in India over the next 5 years, the scope for these companies is immense if they manage their assets-liabilities in a decent manner

India Business-Politician Nexus Intimidates Poor Tribals Selling Land cheaply for Janjgir Champa Power Plant (Videocon,Kanwar) Twist Laws

Indian Businessmen and Politicians have been looting the citizens and the treasury of billions of dollars through numerous corruption scams and scandals. While the focus has been on the big corruption scandals at the centre being perpetrated by ruling party politicians, opposition party has not been far behind. The Nira Radia Tapes revealed the extent to which the Indian politicians have sold the state to big business.Major ministers are appointed by the major industrial conglomerates leading to billions of dollars in embezzlement. There are numerous instances like the Commonwealth Games Scam,Adarsh Scam, the 2G Telecom Scam etc. Many of the politicians are now big businessmen themselves owning companies legally and illegally.According to Nira Radi,India's agricultural minister is the benami owner of one of the largest realty companies DB Realty whose CEO is cooling his heels in jail for the 2G Scam. The concerned minister is also involved in the Lavasa City Scam in which a whole city was built in partnership with HCC flouting all environmental norms and regulations.

Huge Solar Panel Farms,Rooftop Projects in USA being planned as Solar System Prices decrease 40% to $3.50/watt (NRG Energy,National Solar Power,First Solar )

Huge Solar Panel Projects are being planned in the USA by solar developers and utilities as solar panel prices have fallen by 20-30% in the second quarter of 2011 as solar panel manufacturers are faced with oversupply and inventory issues.Note building both coal and nuclear power plants in the US has become increasingly difficult with pollution and climate change issues coming to the fore. While natural gas is getting a boost due to cheap shale gas discoveries, solar energy is picking up pace due to the government support in the form of DOE Loan guarantees and Treasury Grant programs like 1705.Recently two very large solar panel projects have been announced or are in the process over the next 3-4 years.

Indian Equity Investing – Offshore Funds and Portfolio Management Schemes (PMS) give big losses, fool investors, trail benchmarks – Better off investing in ETFs

Indian equity investing through offshore funds might not be the best idea as these funds have underperformed the benchmarks by putting too much weight on infrastructure and capital goods sector.Note lured by the $500 billion investment target for Indian infrastructure,an Indian infra ETF INXX was also launched at a ludicrous valuation. However the endemic corruption in India with scams related to major infrastructure sectors like Real Estate,Telecom popping up everyday, its not a surprise that the stocks have tanked.Note investing in the Indian stocks markets is hazardous with issues like insider trading, pump and dump schemes quite rampant. The risks of corruption are huge and even top asset managers like Goldman,GMO have become victims of fly by night operators just like a simple retail investor.

BJP finds it hard to fight Congress on Anti-Corruption as its own Ministers(Kalia,Swarna Ram,Yeddurappa) Indulge in Land Scams

BJP,the chief opposition party in India is finding it hard to fight the ruling party's widespread corruption as its leader are too compromised in land scams of their own.The Karnataka ministers of the BJP are known to be amongst the most corrupt in the country with the CM himself indulging in land scams along with his sons. The Bellary trio of Reddy brothers have amassed billions of dollars through plundering iron ore illegally and having literally bought the government in Karnataka for the BJP with their ill-gotten wealth.Karnataka’s Chief Minister has justified corruption as tradition and despite huge pressure to resign managed to survive due to unique caste politics of India .The Supreme Court has called the corruption in India “mind boggling” while the Chief Vigilance Officer had earlier called 30% of India’s population utterly corrupt. Now the BJP's ministers in the Punjab government have been accused of land scams in the state. Two of the BJP ministers Manoranjan Kalia and Swarna Ram have been implicated in a Land deal on the outskirts of Chandigarh.Kalia holds the industries and local bodies portfolio, Ram is social welfare and justice minister.

More Indian Insider Trading Malfeasance exposed as SKS Microfinance falls 20% before Loss Announcement

Note the stock fell before it announced the results after the close of the markets which means that insider trading had take n place. The volumes at 10 times certainly seems to hint so as the JP Morgan downgrade of the stock could not have led to such a big fall in which there are a large number of foreign and domestic funds as investors.Besides its problems in Andhra Pradesh are hardly new and Indian brokers hardly that good that their reports cause such big stock price movements.Like other SEBI probes expect this one to fail or result in a small penatly which will not deter more such white collar fraunds in the Indian Stock Market.Insider Trading in India is quite widespread with some of the biggest business groups having been fined by SEBI like ADAG etc.

'Regularisation of Illegality' – India's Environment Minister Helpless in Taking action against Ecological Destruction

India's environment minister Jairam Ramesh has pleaded helplessness as he is too being forced to go along with these environmental destructive projects. This is a characteristic which is peculiar to India and has allowed the culture of corruption to flourish. If you build a large enough project with enough billions in investment you can get away with the murder of the environment as the government could destroy such a large investment. These ad hoc measures which lead to construction of illegal projects has been leading to the destruction of ecology in a large scale manner.Only a blanket demolition of all structures built illegally irrespective of the cost will lead to the lessening of the corruption in the business sector.

Government controlled CBI (intentionally) messes up investigation into Minister Corruption in Adarsh Scam

CBI which is India's leading investigate agency controlled by the government at the centre has been known to be a pawn in the ruling party hands. It selectively investigates cases against the opposition and the ruling alliance repeatedly messing up intentionally cases of graft against government ministers at the state and federal level. The Ruling Party has often used CBI as a powerful tool against both alliance parties as well as the opposition parties. This blantant manner of corruption had made the Supreme Court directly take the supervision of CBI in the 2G Telecom Scandal investigation which has thrown top corporate and politicians in jail. Now CBI has started acting tardily in the Adarsh Housing Scandal in which top Congress ministers in Maharashtra, bureaucrats, retired generals and admirals had conspired to usurp real estate land worth crores of ruppees.

Lavasa A Township built on Sand – How the Politics-Business Nexus Colluded to give Birth to this Environmental Disaster

Lavasa is a story of corruption, looting of the poor and raping of the surrounding environment by the Indian politician-bureaucrat-businessmen nexus in a beautiful cover of a township built for the rich and well heeled. There is little concern for the law as these powerful developers know that they can get away with murder quite literally. The long term sustainability of the township is in doubt which defeats the entire purpose anyway.Any buyer of property in Lavasa should be aware of these problems and should not buy it as their investment will be eroded in the future anyway besides having the taint of being looted from the poor. However the media too has lost interest as a new scandal emerges everyday. Lavasa Township being constructed near Pune,Maharashtra has been in the media off and on for creating a environmental disaster in the shape of a beautiful township constructed on the hills. The town which has been constructed for 300,000 residents has violated all building and environmental norms of the state and centre. With powerful politicians and businessmen backing the project, its not as surprise that the state government of Maharashtra actively helped the township in bypassing all the laws and regulations. There is no provision for permanent water supply and it would lead to a clash between the water wants of Lavasa and Pune.Note builders in India are notorious for leaving out water and waste sustainability in their plans. The residents of the buildings, apartments and other shelters have to bear the brunt later on when there is no water and problems like waterlogging.Gurgaon the millenium township suffers from both of these problems quite acutely.Note these problems are common to both million dollar homes as well as slums in India.

Telecom Industry India – List of Telecom Companies in Crowded Market (Scams,3G,Competition,Subscribers)

The Indian telecom industry is the world's fastest growing industry with 792 million mobile phone subscribers as of February 2011. It is also the second largest telecommunication network in the world in terms of number of wireless connections after China. The industry will reach around $80 billion in revenues by next year showing an astounding CAGR of over 25% and will employ a stupendous 1 crore employees making it one of the biggest value creators in India in recent times. However the telecom companies in India after enjoying a boom period in the early 2000s have faced a couple of tough years with hypercompetition leading to a price war in auction of 3G spectrum. This was followed by one of the most high profile corruption scandals in the country which resulted in the jailing of the former telecom minister in the 2nd auction of 2G spectrum. Most of the telecom companies have been found to be implicated in colluding with sleazy politicians/bureaucrats in looting the Indian taxpayers.India Real Estate Sector is one of the most corrupt in the country and after the 2G Scam, the telecom sector is giving it close competition for the No.1 spot in corruption

Solar Power Plant Project – How to Build a Solar Plant in 10 Steps

Solar Power Plants have mushroomed in different parts of the world as Global Solar Demand has increased by more than 150% in 2010.Solar Power Plants built on the Ground differ from that put on the Roofs of Houses as they require to go through feasibility, environmental assessment, grid connection, siting etc. which is typical for a large industrial project. The time taken to build a solar power plant project is also much more than a rooftop residential solar installation.Solar Farms are being mainly being built in countries which have subsidy program like tax rebates, feed in tariffs etc. However building a solar plant has become quite easy unlike in the past as solar panel, solar inverters and installation expertise is more easily available. The regulations and permits for building a solar plant or a solar farm on the other hand differ from country to country and region to region depending on federal and state laws. For a Large Solar Plant like the Aqua Caliente, there are a number of permitting steps that have to be passed before the plant can be built. For smaller power plants in the 5 MW range the requirements are less.In general the smaller the size of the solar installation, the lower the number of regulations required. Here are the steps required in building a Solar Power Plant

Biggest Solar Power Plant – A Moving Target Being Superseded by even Bigger Solar Plants from First Solar

Solar Power Plants till a couple of years were quite small compared to the mainstream energy power plants. Most power plants were in the double digit range with no Solar Farms having the capacity of 100 MW or greater. This is in reference to PV Solar Power Plants and not to Solar Thermal Plants which are bigger in size.Note Solar Thermal Plants by the very nature of technology require larger sizes to be economical just like Thermal or Nuclear Power Plants. On the other hand PV Power Plants do not gain much in economies of scale and government prefer giving subsidies to distributed rooftop solar installations rather than large solar farms.

Real Estate Prices in India go through the Roof in a Bubble – Reasons for Rise Tax Laws,Corruption,Black Money,Policy Stupdity

Real Estate Prices in India have gone through the roof crossing the highs they made during the 2008 run-up.Note real estate in a lot of places globally are in a bubble right now - China,Australia,Canada .However the India Real Estate Bubble is seldom talked about as it has not reached the levels reached for example in China. However the property prices are becoming increasingly irrational. The causes of the Real Estate Prices increases in India are mostly due to the fact that Market Forces are not allowed to operate freely. The regulations, corruption, lack of transperncy, vested interests, cultural factors all have a role to play. Here are some of the reason that I think Real Estate Prices are totally irrational in India.Readers of this Blog are urged to add their views as this is a complex discussion and many people will say that Real Estate in India in not a Bubble but a result of High Population Density,Demand,India's Economic Growth .

List of India Machinery/Capital Goods/Engineering Manufacturers/Stocks – Set to Capitalize on Infra Growth

India's Economy is being hampered in its growth trajectory by lack of infrastructure which is leading to supply side problems.India suffers woefully from a lack of roads, electricity, ports etc. and almost a trillion dollars is going to be spent in the next few years as demand outstrips supply.India's Machinery and Capital Goods Industry is set to capitalize on this strong growth and is already seeing massive orders which are 2-3 years worth of their annual revenue. While the stock valuations of the capital goods equipment manufacturers has come down a bit from the heavy days of 2008,they are still quite high reflecting the strong growth potential.India's Engineering Industry is also composed of a number of smaller manufacturers that export light engineering equipment worth several billion dollars mostly to developing countries.India's Machinery Sector is composed of a mix of government owned and private companies as well as the giant capital goods MCN conglomerates like Areva and others. Here is a list of the major Indian equipment manufacturers.

India's Major Construction/EPC/Infrastructure Companies (L&T,HCC,IVRCL,NCC,JP,Gammon)- Facing Tough Times Temporarily?

India is set to see a massive infrastructure capex cycle over the next decade as the existing infrastructure fails to support India's massive population.$500 Billion is expected to be spent in India's next 5 year plan with expenditure concentrated on roads, railways, ports, water, power, transportation etc.Capital Goods,Construction and Real Estate Companies will benefit hugely from this capex cycle.A Number of Companies have been raising capital from the Indian Stock Markets as India requires massive amounts of capital to fund its ambitious growth plans. Here is the list of top construction companies in India on the basis of their tie-ups with their international counterparts, technological advancements, generating money from the market to trigger their expansion plans and for establishing an entire township in the wastelands and making it the hottest commercial destination.Note Infrastructure companies in recent days have taken a massive beating falling to their 2008 Lehman lows. This is due the the numerous scams hitting the country, delays due to land acquisition, high interest rates and slow execution. However the long term potential of these construction/EPC companies in India remains excellent due to the massive investments.

List of USA Solar Installers/System Integrators/EPC Companies – Massive Growth Ahead

The US is the world's largest electricity producer and consumer with a total electricity capacity of around 1 Terawatt. The share of Solar Energy in the US Electricity Production is negligible compared to around 19% for Nuclear Energy and around 2-3% for Wind Energy. However Solar Energy in the US is set to grow at high double digits over the next 2 decades as the Costs of Solar Energy Decline with prices of other Energy Forms set to rise.In some states like Hawaii and California, solar energy prices are already at grid parity with retail electricity prices. Some states like New Jersey,Colorado,Arizona have seen sharp increases in solar energy adoption over the last 2-3 years boosted by state specific government policies and subsidies. With the US Federal 30% Cash Grant on System Costs and falling systems prices for solar systems, the growth in inevitable. The US Solar Market has seen the rise of a number of innovative and fast growing system integration and installers. Some companies have come up with innovative financial solutions to solve the high initial investment hurdles in solar systems through leasing and financing plans. Here are a list of Top US Installers/System Integrators.Note the list will keep expanding in the coming years as the size of the US Solar Energy Market Grows.

A Real Estate Way to Go Green – Clean Technology and Green REITs

A Clean Technology REIT is about to be launched which is going to invest in real estate which generates clean energy. The strategy is simple to invest in properties which have green energy power plants.Note Clean Tech Investing has yielded terrible results for public investors in the last couple of years. The failure of Copenhagen,Cancun Climate Meets and the Lehman crisis has led to a bloodbath for Green Investors.Don't know how successful this strategy will be for I don't know how much alpha a Clean Tech REIT can generate over a normal REIT.However the performance of DLR has been quite awesome over the last few years.

India's Environment Ministry bows to King Coal – Allows Mining in "No-Go" Forested Areas

India's Environment Ministry Jairam Ramesh has been portrayed as the devil incarnate by the industrial lobbies as he has struck down various billion dollar realty, mining and power projects.First it was Vedanta's mining project in Orissa, then the Lavasa township in Pune and then power projects in Andhra Pradesh. While some of these infrastructure projects should go ahead with modifications,it has brought some regard for the environment. While some of the projects like the Jaitapur Nuclear Plant in Maharashtra were given the environmental go-ahead despite serious concerns raised by TISS and local citizens, the trampling of ecology by the corporate lobbies seems to have been curtailed. However India's growing economy and its massive energy needs cannot be kept at bay for long.

Crony Capitalists in India face tough times as Judiciary cracks down

The Liberalization of India in the 1990s ushered in a new era of not only high growth as its industries and enterpreneurs were unshackled from the chains of License Raj but also an era of Crony Capitalism. The erstwhile business barons who maintained their fiefdoms through manipulation of licenses, now shifted their focus elsewhere. With new sectors of the opening up and growing exponentially unscrupulous promoters had the chance to mint billions. The bursting of the 2G Telecom Scam has bust the cozy Crony Capitalism Relationship.India's Supreme Court reposing lack of faith in the investigative powers of the government has personally taken charge of the prosecution. With powerful ministers, bureaucrats and billionaire businessmen involved, only India's Supreme Court has the chance to bring the guilty to justice.

India's Darling Infrastructure Stocks which could do no wrong turn Lepers Overnight (INXX)

India's Infrastructure Sector which was considered the ideal play on India's fast growing GDP and its huge infrastructure requirements long commanded nosebleed valuations. While realty stocks which are closely related to the infra ones had long collapsed after the GFC in 2008 ,the infrastructure stocks had retained their preeminence in the stock market rally. However end 2010 and 2011 has seen a vicious change in their fortunes.Stocks like IVRCL,IRB,Punj Lloyd,L&T,Gammon etc have seen their stock prices nosedive. The stocks have corrected far more than the broader market which has itself fallen more than 15% in 2011. The problems related to the infrastructure stocks are varied and they have converged for investors to totally lose confidence in this sector something akin to the realty sector. The list of the problems are

Corruption Scandals continue to hit Indian Stocks – DB Realty,Sun TV,Spice Jet

These 3 Indian companies DB Realty,Sun TV,Spice Jet have very little to relate to each other. One is a real estate company, one is one of the fastest growing media companies while the third one is one of the biggest low cost airlines in which Wilbur Ross was an investor. The common thread running through these companies is their association with a regional political party in India at the center of a massive billion dollar telecom scam in India. The leader of this party Raja was recently sacked from his post as the telecom minister and has now earned the dubious distinction of becoming the first minister to get jail time from his own government.Corruption Scandals have ruled the roost in the last 6 months frequently leading to huge stock price drops.Small Cap,Mid cap scandals, insider trading, bribery rings have all been documented by this blog which led to huge losses for investors.

India's Big Business-Politics Unholy Alliance – Agricultural Minister Brazenly Supports Favored Corporates

Now the Agricultural Minister of India has come out brazenly batting for his favored corporate interests. It is openly known that Sharad Pawar is closely associated with the Lavasa City Project being built by HCC near Pune. The Company has criticized the Environment Minister for questioning the environment clearance. The Minister on the other hand wants to know why he was not consulted.Don't know how Agriculture expertise will help in deciding the environment clearance of a Realty Project. But in case of India's Business Elite anything goes it seems.Note the Agricultural Minister is said to be close business ally and played a prominent role in the recent cricketing scam as well. However as usual nothing came out of it as the politician-business unholy alliance brazenly runs the Indian government.

Another Indian Stock Market Scandal Erupts as Realty Firm Ackruti City and Broker Dangi get Banned for Rigging Share Prices

India's Stock Market Regulator has been hardly proactive in cracking down on stock market manipulation except for some inefficient scolding. It has banned some companies and a stock market operator for artificially rigging up stock prices through a nefarious scheme so that the stock could placed through QIBs at higher prices.Recently GMO,Goldman,Morgan and Fidilety got conned by a fly by night Indian financier who managed to place $100 million of his company's shares a hugely inflated price.A cursory due diligence by these high flying financial institutions would have shown his business model to a sham.Realty Investing in India is always a dangerous game with real estate firms involved in all sorts of corruption scandals.Akruti City whose shares had seen a massive rise some months ago has been implicated by SEBI for rigging up its share price with the help of a "stock market operator" Dangi. Some other firms like Murli Industries,Welspun Corp have been found to be part of this corruption game as well.Broking Firms like Ashika and Anand Rathi were broking for the Operator.Note SEBI has not done much except banning these firms.I would have though that these white collar crimes should be punished more stringently.Banning some entities without any jail time will lead to more and more of these stock rigging in the future.

List of Top Real Estate Companies in India;A Sector Plagued by Scams and Scandals

Organized Real Estate Industry in India is only a couple of decades old .Real Estate Industry in India took off with the global boom in the Realty Sector which percolated down to India as well.Lack of clear land titles and litigation has made this industry one of the most opaque and corrupt ones.Due to the massive price appreciation and huge valuations,Land Scams have become quite common with Chief Ministers,Generals,Top Bureaucrats all involved in the murky environment of Real Estate in India. The most recent scam related to bribing of top public banks officials in the LIC Housing Finance Scandal has again put question mark on the fundamentals of the industry.Valuing the industry and making a real estate investment remains one of the most difficult investing tasks in the Indian Stock Market.Even Fund Managers are staying away from the Sector due to lack of trust in the Financial Statement given by the industry. That said modern India presents a booming picture of tall buildings and huge office areas & shopping malls. A list of the chief players in Indian market is given below:
