List of Top Ten Banks in India – Each a Good Investment for Different Reasons

India's GDP has been growing at a rapid clip over the past decade and is set to grow at even a faster pace in the coming decade.Financial services penetration of the Indian economy is quite low compared to even other developing economies. With majority of the Indian population mired in poverty, access to banks and financial companies is quite hard as people lack knowledge and education.India's banks have grown at a rapid pace over the past 2 decades after the financial liberalization. However this growth has still lacked in meeting the massive demand in the need of financial intermediation. This has led to the growth on non-banking financing companies (NBFCs) and microfinance companies. With the opening of the insurance sector, financial companies in India are set to enter a new growth phase.Major banks in India are either state owned or previous government owned institutions which have been fully privatized like ICICI and HDFC Bank. Both the state owned banks and the private banks have managed to grow without throwing the whole system in a crisis like what has happened in the recent past in Europe and USA and in China in the 1990s.Here is a list of the 10 Major Banks in India

List of Coal Mining Companies/Stocks in India – A Great Buying Oppurtunity

Coal Demand in India is surging as the power companies set up thermal power plants at an astounding rate to triple the power capacity over the next decade.Soaring Coal Prices have already made the Global Electricity Prices shoot up and its probably going to increase more in the coming decade.China is the world's largest producer and consumer of coal accounting almost for the 50% of the world's output at 3 Billion Tons.India is far behind at 400 million tons but will fast catch up given the prodigious rate of power plant building that is happening. The Environment is probably going for a toss as India has allowed "No-Go" Forested Areas to be mined. This plus China and India are importing more and more coal from Australia,South Africa and the USA.The recent looking in Australia saw coal prices shoot up alarmingly.Coal India the world's largest coal producing company recently increased the coal price from its shockingly low price leading cement makers and utilities to raise prices more than 5-10%.While its strange for a green blog to recommend coal stocks, the opportunity does exist over the next 10 years till renewable energy comes to grid parity and policymakers don't come to their senses. Here is a list of coal stocks/companies in India .Note there are not many major private coal companies as in the early 1970s, all privately owned coal producing companies were nationalized under the Coal Mines (Nationalisation) Act.

Lovable Lingerie IPO Review and Analysis – Should you buy the Stock for some love?

Lovable Lingerie is an innerwear textile company that is coming out with a $20 million IPO.Unlike other totally junk issues which are totally hands of market operators, this one seems to have decent fundamentals and the valuation is not too expensive either. The company has managed to sell 6% pre-IPO to Sequioa Capital which is one of the blue blood PE firms in the country. However this should not be an endorsement given that a number of their investments have bombed in the recent mid cap and small cap carnage.Corporate governance and management issues in small companies in India is totally out of control so investing just based on pure fundamentals does not help. Also a number of other companies in the same sector in textiles remain at attractive valuations. That said the company does have good differentiation as it leverages on the fast growing Indian consumer growth story. The company sells Lingerie though top retail outlets like Lifestyle,Shopper's Stop in top Indian metros and has good brand recall. Here are the positives and negatives of the company based on its DRHP.

India Solar Subsidy JNNSM Guide – What you needed to know

The Indian Government’s launch of the ambitious Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission(JNNSM) was done with much fanfare with a target of reaching 20 GW of Solar Capacity by 2022 under 3 phases from the 81 MW currently. While the government had the best intentions and had laid down a well defined 10 year plan with subsidy support for both Solar Thermal and Solar PV Technology,it has already run into problems.Due to high interest the government went in for bidding of projects which led to irrationally low bidding from unknown firms. This has put the entire exercise in question with the the biggest private utility saying JNNSM is a failure.Without extensions of deadlines it looks highly unlikely whether the 37 winners will actually put up the plants.

German Development Bank Kfw joins ADB,World Bank in funding Clean Energy in India

German Development Bank Kfw which is owned by the German government is planning to invest 800 million Euros in Indian Renewable Energy Sector.Note Kfw is one of the biggest funding institutions in Germany for renewable energy projects giving concessional interest rates. The Bank will use its extensive expertise in the alternative energy and energy efficiency areas to extend its business in India as well.Renewable Energy in India is expected to see a massive expansion in the next decade and will require massive amounts of debt and equity.Kfw alongwith other developmental institutions like ADB and World Bank have a big role to play.Note Debt is quite expensive in India and these institutions provide loans at a much cheaper rate making renewable energy projects viable.ADB has already formed a JV with NTPC and is looking to rescue JNNSM as well.IFC is funding numerous clean projects in India following its developmental mandate as well.

List of World's Top (Solar,Semi) 8 Polysilicon Companies – Asia Rising as Big get Bigger

Polysilicon or refined silicon is the raw material behind most of the world's consumer electronics.Polysilicon is used to make both solar and semiconductor silicon wafers.Silicon wafers are used in making chips which are used by the Intels and Samsungs of the world while Solar Wafers are used in making solar crystalline panels used in generating electricity from the sun. Most of the world's major solar energy companies used c-Si Technology in making solar panels.Polysilicon is an energy intensive process which requires cheap electricity. The polysilicon is produced mostly in the western countries like Japan,USA and Germany now. However the rise of solar panel producers in Asia has given rise to large volume Asian producers of polysilicon as well.Note Polysilicon production is concentrated in the hands of 8-9 companies unlike solar panel production which is done by hundreds of companies. This is a capital intensive process and requires around 2 years to complete a single plant.Semiconductors require higher purity levels of Polysilicon than the solar industry. The massive increase in demand from the solar industry has led to massive growth in poly production. Here are a list of the main polysilicon companies in the world

List of Top Solar Thermal/Concentrated Solar Power(CSP) Companies – Under Threat from Solar PV

Solar Thermal Technology has been facing tough competition from its sister Solar PV Technology in recent times.Despite strong government subsidies and support, numerous drawbacks have contributed to this Technology losing out to Solar PV in a number of projects in the US notably by Tessera. However a number of startups and big conglomerates continue to make huge investments in this technology.Spain and US are leaders in implementation of this Solar Technology type, however others like India and China are to building CSP plants as their energy needs continue to grow.Note like Solar PV,there are a number of different technology types for CSP like Power Tower,Parabolic Troughs, linear fresnel technology and Stirling Engines. Here is a list of the most important Solar Thermal Companies (Technology Providers cum Project Developers)

Indian Retail Investors cannot trade in Forex Markets as RBI clamps down on fleecing by Forex Companies

The Reserve Bank of India has clarified that Indian individuals cannot trade in the forex markets under FEMA rules.Note a number of Indian brokers and forex companies were advertising heavily promising big returns to retail investors.Note forex markets are extremely tough to trade even for professional traders for institutions. For retail investors they are a sure shot way to lose money in large amounts.Note forex markets offer much higher leverage than normal Futures Equity markets.Being an effectively zero sum game and requiring high amounts of knowledge ,forex markets are just too sophisticated for retail investors in my view. But they are quite lucrative for forex trading portals and companies whose main target semgent are retail investors.

New Trend in Indian Corruption – PSU Bosses prefer Gold Bricks as Bribes

Corruption in India has taken massive proportions with a new scam being unearthed almost every day .However this has not metered the architects of corruption in India from continuing their looting spree. While the 2G Telecom Scam throws up new looting revelations, newer corruption scams are also competing for newspaper inches.Investing in the Indian stock markets is at best a hazardous activity with most of the promoters trying to fleece shareholders.Mid cap and small cap scams have already resulted in massive losses. Now investing in India's largest companies belonging to the main Nifty Index has also become dangerous. While the scam related to the ADAG Group has already resulted in 80-90% fall from the peaks of the companies of this group, others are joining in.Nalco which is a government owned integrated aluminum producer was thought to be one of the safest companies to invest in.However even this company has fallen. The CEO of the company was found taking bribes in the form of gold bricks in return for favors.

World's Largest Solar Wafer Maker GCL Poly Set to Grow Even Bigger

China based GCL Poly is the biggest solar wafer producer in the world wresting the crown from LDK Solar in 2010.GCL Poly is now set to grow even bigger in 2011 raising its wafer capacity almost 85% making it No.1 by far.Note solar wafers are made up of polysilicon and used as raw materials for making solar cells which generate electricity from the sun. They are very similar to semiconductor wafers which are used to make the basic building blocks for electronics.GCL Poly has seen a massive rise from 2010 when it started to producer solar wafers. The company's strategy of setting up plants near its major customers have landed it major deals and lower the cost in the supply chain.

List of Geothermal Energy Companies in India – Stuck in a Limbo

Geothermal Energy in India is non existent with not a single functioning plant as of 2011.However potential for this renewable energy exists in a number of sites in India with a potential of around 10 GW.With the Indian government planning to come out with a draft policy to develop geothermal energy by March 2011,major companies are gearing up to exploit this alternative energy resource.Note India has massive energy needs and with a 15% energy requirement from clean sources by 2020,it will need to develop all renewable sources.Note India already has a well developed Wind Energy Industry and has one of the fasted growing Solar Power Industry in the world with a massive future growth potential.Geothermal Energy is regarded as a poor cousin to its more glamorous cousins Wind and Solar. However Geothermal Energy possesses one attribute that the others do not.Its 24 hour generation capability is a massive plus compared to the intermittent nature of Wind and Solar Energy. However long project development time and massive capital investments have deterred fast growth in geothermal energy in the world. However some countries like Iceland,Indonesia,Philippines and USA have a strong geothermal energy industry.

Acropetal Technologies IPO – Not Junk but Not Compelling Either

Acropetal Technologies is a bit different from the run of the mill junk IPOs coming out in Feb 2011.After a deluge of crap IPOs in 2010,2011 has not seen many of them as the markets have corrected by around 15%.However a recent rally has bought out the junk companies in association with their associated shady bankers and market operators.Omkar,Sudar,FCL are some of the totally crap IPOs which have happened or in the process of happening.Acropetal Technologies is an IT/ITES company plans to raise Rs 170-crore through its IPO on February 21. The company has fixed the price-band of its IPO at between Rs 88 and Rs 90 per equity share. The company will use Rs 55 crore for acquisitions and Rs 26 crores for a software office. The company seems better quality than the junk and may merit a look from investors though there are much better companies on offer at better prices in the secondary markets. Here are the positives and negatives of the IPO

Sudar Garments IPO Review – Extremely Low Quality,High Valuation with a Shady Investment Banker

In the season of scams and scandals when the erstwhile high flying mid cap and small cap names are getting battered for management issues,Sudar Garments has surprisingly come out with an IPO despite spotty corporate governance issues.Like so many of the junk IPOs coming out in 2010,this one too should managed to raise money through market operators. The modus operandi of these IPOs is mostly pump and dump where a few unscrupulous and shady brokers are responsible for managing the issue. With the stock market regulator SEBI refusing to crack down on these blatant manipulation, the pipeline of crappy small cap junk IPOs in the Indian stock market keeps growing.Thought that the current market crash would have removed them, but apparently not so as the junk IPO industry keeps growing stronger. This despite the more than 50% crash on issue day of Omkar Chemicals ( a junk IPO).Here are some of the notable negatives of the issue which has been given a 1 out of a 5 rating by rating agency CRISIL (not that the rating help the retail investors).

Will Solar Thermal Startup Brightsource Energy after raising $420 million go down like Solyndra

Solyndra is one of the most hyped solar starups which has managed to raise $1 billion in funding and coming out with surprisingly little for the money. Not only did it postpone its IPO but also shut down its first factory as pricess keep diving faster than it can cut costs.Brightsource Energy on the other hand seems to have a brighter future with its unique CSP technology. Also with backers like Alstom and Bechtel,it has the heavy engineering support to construct the massive 392 MW plant.Note other Solar Thermal startups like Ausra and Soliel Systems were bought up by giant engineering conglomerartes Areva and Siemens.Brightsource along with eSolar remain the only pureplay CSP companies still surviving.

Fineotex Chemical (FCL) IPO Review – Extremely Small Risky Company Very Avoidable

Fineotex Chemicals (FCL) is a Maharashtra based small chemicals company which is coming out with an IPO for 4.2 million shares at Rs 60-72 to raise Rs 25-30 crores with a total market cap of around Rs 42-50 crores. The company has a 5000 tons plant and is expanding by 13000 tons. The company has little resources by way of cash and it seems strange that a Rs 15 crore company would raise money from the capital markets rather than raising more debt which seems low at around Rs 80 lakhs. Can't find much to say anything positive except that there are no lawsuits pending against the promoters. Here are the negatives. Omkar Specialty Chemicals was a major disaster for all the investors who decided to gamble on small cap IPO junk.Gambling on FCL in this environment does not make any sense, would make more sense to gamble your money in a casino. In this market you would have a much better chance of returns.

India's Darling Infrastructure Stocks which could do no wrong turn Lepers Overnight (INXX)

India's Infrastructure Sector which was considered the ideal play on India's fast growing GDP and its huge infrastructure requirements long commanded nosebleed valuations. While realty stocks which are closely related to the infra ones had long collapsed after the GFC in 2008 ,the infrastructure stocks had retained their preeminence in the stock market rally. However end 2010 and 2011 has seen a vicious change in their fortunes.Stocks like IVRCL,IRB,Punj Lloyd,L&T,Gammon etc have seen their stock prices nosedive. The stocks have corrected far more than the broader market which has itself fallen more than 15% in 2011. The problems related to the infrastructure stocks are varied and they have converged for investors to totally lose confidence in this sector something akin to the realty sector. The list of the problems are

Top 5 Indian Stock Market Pitfalls as Nifty falls below 200 EMA(PIN,INP,EPI,INDY)

Indian Stocks Market are a very difficult place to invest despite claims to the contrary which will be made by institutional investors. The all pervasive corruption present amongst most of the company managements makes bottom up stock picking a tough call.Even institutional "smart" investors like Goldman,GMO frequently get tripped by fly by night operators.Market operators blatantly manipulate stocks while the primary market is a "pump and dump" heaven. However the Indian growth story has fooled fund managers from outside to keep investing into the story.I have written in the blog numerous pitfalls present in investing in India. Some of these are coming home to roost as the Indian stock markets have fallen by more than 10% in 2011 despite other markets making new highs. Here are the top 5 Headwinds facing the Indian markets in 2011.

Have the European Solar companies (REC,Solarworld,Q-Cells) really returned from the dead?

The European Solar Companies have found things going tough in 2009 as the solar market changed radically with the Lehman crisis. As the prices of the raw material Polysilicon crashed and Chinese competition increased, these companies started bleeding red ink in a prodigious manner. The high cost structure of these companies with factories in Europe stood naked against the competition. With high debt loads, there was a high change that these companies would go bankrupt. Most of them like Q-Cells,REC started to move manufacturing to Asia while Solarworld moved to Europe.Other smaller companies muddled through. However a spectacular 2010 growth in world solar demand has brought new life into these companies. With capacity constrained, even their higher prices could be absorbed by solar installers. These companies have reported much better 2010 results with Solarworld and REC leading the way.

Spanish Government faces Lawsuits over Solar Feed in Tariff Cuts from ASIF

The Spanish Government faces multiple lawsuits over its Royal Decrees which cut the Feed in Tariff for Solar PV Installations Retroactively. These laws were passed in Dec 2010 as part of the comprehensive review of the Renewable Energy Subsidies by the government. While Wind Energy and Solar Thermal Subsidies were changed earlier, the controversy over the Solar PV subsidies had forced the government to delay the change to the last minute. These changes were strongly opposed by the Solar PV Industry Association ASIF which has earlier called the measure as "industry killing".These cuts over the next 3 years would be done through a "backdoor approach" in which the subsidies would be restricted for a only a few hours for the Solar PV plants.

Vietnam's Currency Problems underline Political Strength of Dollar

The Dollar is being relentlessly attacked by Bears due to massive QE program unleashed by the US Fed.However the US Dollar continues to be a safe refuge in many parts of the world. For countries affected by major politicial and economic problems, dollar is looked upon a safe haven for capital preservation. Many of these places have a history of high inflation and major political upheavals. In these places,Gold and Dollar are looked upon as equals for preserving wealth during times of chaos.Vietnam serves as a reminder where even citizens of relatively fast growing stable economies look upon as Dollar as a rock of stability. The South East Asian country has seen high inflation in recent times and numerous devaluations of its currency. The Communist led country has tried to replicate China in many of its policies some of which have backfired. The recent scandal and debt default of a major government owned company has shaken the confidence of investors. With high inflation and depleting foreign reserves

India's Supreme Court Extremely Shocked by Industries Minister Role in Farmer Suicides

India has been plagued with a large number of scams and scandals in recent days. Not that it has made much difference to the functioning of politicians and bureaucrats.India's Agriculture Minister was blatantly defending favored business interests while India's PM seems more interested in Big Business Privacy rather than tackling corruption. The Stock Market after falling for a couple of days due to increasing number of stock market scandals, has returned to normal. However the Indian politicians keep shocking the country with even more and more brazen acts of corruption and nepotism.

2 Giant Solar Thermal Projects by Tessera,NTR in USA run into financial trouble even before start of construction

Using the same logic,I had questioned the massive amount of USA taxpayer money being given as a cash grant to build almost 4-5 GW of Solar Thermal Plants in California. Most of these solar thermal projects were approved in the last 6 months of 2010 so that they could be eligible for the Treasury Cash Grant under Rule 1603.I seem to have been vindicated quite early with 2 of these giant solar thermal projects being developed by Tessera Solar have run into trouble. The CEO of the company has already left and many of the employees have been fired.Strange for a company that has won multi billion projects in hand. The parent Irish company NTR is reportedly looking to shelve the plants as it does not have enough money for 5% of the total project costs required before 2010 end.

Can ADB rescue India's JNNSM with Loan Guarantees and Equity Investment

Asian Development Bank (ADB) may rescue the JNNSM process which seems to be headed for certain problems. The Bank is committing to provide loan guarantees for under 30 MW projects to Indian Banks and upto 25% equity investment into >30 MW projects.Note debt financing is a major issue which was talked about by the biggest Indian utilities for not participating.Note ADB has already committed to setting up 500 MW Renewable Energy Capacity in India in JV with NTPC.This will further increase ADB's exposure to Solar Energy in India. It remains to be seen if ADB give equity and debt to many of these projects which don't seem to be feasible at these prices. Will ADB willing to take losses in these ventures and provide loans to many of these unknown firms with no track record.

India's Supreme Court Blasts Government,Reveals India's Investigative Agencies are Mere Puppets

The low level of trust in the Indian government's investigative and vigilance agencies was revealed when India's Highest Court, the Supreme Court of India blasted the government for its choice of the Central Vigilance Commissioner.India has been rocked by a series of Housing Loan,Telecom and Land Scams recently implicating top politicians, bureaucrats and even army generals and admirals. However no one expects anyone significant to be prosecuted as the prosecutors themselves are compromised. It is openly known that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is totally controlled by the ruling party at the centre. The Income Tax and Enforcement Directorate also serves as puppets of the government being selectively used against opposition politicians and businessmen.

List of Top Real Estate Companies in India;A Sector Plagued by Scams and Scandals

Organized Real Estate Industry in India is only a couple of decades old .Real Estate Industry in India took off with the global boom in the Realty Sector which percolated down to India as well.Lack of clear land titles and litigation has made this industry one of the most opaque and corrupt ones.Due to the massive price appreciation and huge valuations,Land Scams have become quite common with Chief Ministers,Generals,Top Bureaucrats all involved in the murky environment of Real Estate in India. The most recent scam related to bribing of top public banks officials in the LIC Housing Finance Scandal has again put question mark on the fundamentals of the industry.Valuing the industry and making a real estate investment remains one of the most difficult investing tasks in the Indian Stock Market.Even Fund Managers are staying away from the Sector due to lack of trust in the Financial Statement given by the industry. That said modern India presents a booming picture of tall buildings and huge office areas & shopping malls. A list of the chief players in Indian market is given below:

India's Solar Policy JNNSM in Jeopardy due to Irrational Bidding,Financing Difficulties and Small Plant Size

India's JNNSM Phase 1 which is targeting 1000 MW of Solar Power Capacity by 2013 is in jeopardy due to irrational bidding, financing and small size. The 150 MW Solar PV and ~500 MW of Solar Thermal Capacity which has been put to bidding is going to see massive discounts. This will eventually lead to project winners abandoning these projects or delaying it inordinately, leading to a failure of the first phase.India Solar Thermal Bidding has already seen Massive Discounts from the base prices of Rs 15.31 set by CERC and the Solar PV project bidding for 150 MW is going to see equally ferocious discounts.Tata Power, which is India's largest private utility is staying away from these auctions due to the above problems.Renewable Energy in India has a huge growth potential with Solar Energy the brightest Green Energy Sector. This has attracted companies in droves leading to hyper competition for the first phase of India's Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission. However huge competition in this subsidy driven sector is not necessarily good for the growth of Renewable Energy as irrational bidding by small players would lead to project failures.

Nira Radia Wire Tap Reveals Big Business Takeover of the Indian Government

Nira Radia one of the top lobbyists in India has been exposed through wire taps done by Indian investigative agencies which has been leaked to the media. The conversations in the tape have revealed how this lobbyist has India's top politicians, bureaucrats, journalists at her beck and call. While it is known that corporate interest wield huge influence amongst Indian government officials, the tapes reveal that Big Business has the government almost completely in its pocket. The 2G Telecom Scam had earlier shown that how top ministers had connived with capricious business houses in swindling the Indian taxpayers of billions of dollars.LIC Housing Finance Scam which has been recently exposed has led to top government company officials being arrested for taking bribes in sanctioning loans to top realty and infrastructure companies. This had been done by a financial intermediary listed on the stock exchange and which had top investors like Goldman,GMO,Fidelity and Morgan Stanley. With the scam exposed these top investment banks have lost their shirt in this investment.

India's new Corruption Scandal involving a Housing Loan Scam involving Bribes paid to India's top public bank officials has ensnared top notch financial institutions in the West as well. The whos-who of Wall Street got dazed by spectacular growth and profits of a 3 year old financial outfit in India which had been built on a foundation of lies and bribers. This Corruption Scam was started by a Financial Outfit called Money Matter Financial Services which started as a 2 person outfit. However through arranging of debt to big corporate houses by paying bribes to top officials of India's large government owned institutions such as Bank of Indian,PNB and others, the outfit saw its share price increase by 7 times.

Dangers of Indian Realty Investing – Sahara,Oberio Realty,Lavasa and DB Realty prime suspects in latest Corruption Scandal

I have been repeatedly pointing out the dangers of investing in Real Estate Companies as more and more skeletons tumble from the closet. Its an open secret that Real Estate Companies in India fudge their Financial Statements through Creative Accounting and other means such that even Fund Managers don't invest in the Realty Sector.Major Real Estate Companies like IREO and Emaar MGF have played prominent role in some of the major corruption scams rocking the country. Now more big Real Estate Firms have been implicated for their role in other corruption scandals.DB Realty a Mumbai based Realty Company has been found to be a prime suspect in the LIC Housing Finance Scam where the CBI has arrested. Some construction companies like Man Infrastructure,HCC have also become a target of investigation.
