Nira Radia the millionaire lobbyist who became a public figure overnight as tapes leaked to her phone conversations were printed by the mass media has revealed sordid details about the politician businessmen nexus.In the chargesheet presented by the CBI to the Supreme Court she has revealed the multi billion dollar realty company DB Realty is a front for Sharad Pawar and controlled by him.This hardly comes as a surprise as powerful Agri Minister Pawar has been linked to a number of corruption scandals like the Lavasa Scandal,2G Telecom Scam,IPL Scam etc.Note DB Realty CEO has been directly implicated in the transfer of bribe giving to Raja the former Telecom Minister in exchange for a Telecom License at dirt cheap prices.It is a tribute to the power of Pawar that despite such massive circumstantial evidence against him and his family,there has been no court case or police charges against him.Note a number of big companies in India are known to be secretly owned and controlled by powerful politicians.Not that politicians don't own billion dollar businesses openly and use their political muscle to further their own interests in a blatant manner.

Anna Hazare is to end his fast unto death on April 9,5 days after starting his hunger fast demanding the implementation of a Jan Lokpal Bill to replace the toothless Lokpal Bill which has been gathering dust for the last 42 years.The massive public anger against endemic corruption in public life had made the position of the government and the ruling Congress Party extremely uncertain.After trying to defame Hazare as a RSS stooge and worse,wiser counsel seems to have prevailed.Seeing the growing popular support for this anti-corruption movement,the leaders of the Congress Party have totally capitulated to all demands made by the civil society movement.Twitter and Facebook have played an important role in galvanizing popular opinion against corruption and for Anna Hazare.It could mark a turning point for the Indian state as Corruption becomes increasingly difficult.

Tunisia's Mohamed Bouazizi was an unlikely and unknown here protesting againt the daily suffering of the high handedness of authroties while Tahrir Square in Egypt was where the regime toppled.India is still far different from those situations as there is no demand for the government to go,only for a strict anti-corruption law.However Anna Hazare and Jantar Mantar have the ability to become far more than simple a protest on Lokpal Bill.It could be the tide which washes away the abject helplessness of Indians over the corruption of the powerful and rich.Here is a short excerpt of Jantar Mantar and about Anna Hazare

The Government of India has been trying to put hurdles in the 2G Telecom Scam case right from Day 1.Its blatant shielding of the rich and powerful involved in the massive billion dollar corruption involving ruling party alliance members and top corporate houses has been apparent.The proof of the government malintentions was India's top court taking over the supervision of the investigation agency CBI with itself.This was a major slap for the government as CBI falls under the authority of the Home Ministry.With the CBI having filed a chargesheet which names the former Telecom Minister Raja and some billionaire businessmen,the government is again trying its stalling tactics.The government and its repsentative lawyers did not agree to the name of U U Lalit as special public prosecutor.Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Indira Jaising raised objections despite K K Venugopal, who has been appearing on behalf of CBI and ED suggesting his name.

Seeing the rapidly mounting support for the movement,the government has tried to cut losses sending ministers to hold talks on ending the fast.Thousands of schoolchildren,executives,college students has spontaneously joined the Anti-Corruption Movement at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and millions more in different cities across India.It was the first real chance to protest against the endemic corruption and brazen arrogant behaviour of the ruling classes.Many politicians sensing the wind were trying to associate with Hazare.Shashi Tharoor the sauve face of modern India who had been discredited by his unethical conduct in IPL too tweeted that he supported Hazare ( don't know what that means,use your position to gain money unethically in IPL and Commonwealth Scams and support anti-corruption).For now its a success for the Indian democracy but the ultimate success will be when a strong Lokpal Bill is passed.

Anna Hazare the eminent social activist fast unto death may become a major turing point in India's history with massive spontaneous support for the Jan Lokpal Bill drafted by respected members of the Civil Society.The Ruling Congress Party which tried to disparage Hazare through usual political stunts like calling him a Opposition Party Puppet has become unhinged in its respone.While 2 days ago,the Congress Spokesperson Tewari was saying that they did not really care about the hunger fast by Hazare,now the Congress Ministers are rushing to placate him.While Kapil Sibal is calling for more time ( don't know what they did for the last one year when one after another scam was revealed),Moily says that changes will be incorporated.

The Jan LokPal Bill is supposed to be the answer to India's massive endemic corruption which strikes daily in the form of a new scam or scandal.The government has proven to be woefully inadequate in taking on the corrupt politicians,bureaucrats and businessmen.This corrupt nexus has been repeatedly exposed and its structure exposed through the Nira Radia Tapes.The Indian administration has shamefully failed to take action only promising to do something without doing anything worthwhile.The Indian Judiciary has also castigated the government numerous times for its abject failure in the 2G Telecom Scam,Black Money Scandal etc.However the government instead of strengthening anti-corruption measures has only put obstacles in the way.Its no wonder when the committee meant to look after the Bill comprises of ministers tainted with a number of scams themselves.Anna Hazare has held a fast unto death to put pressure on the government to pass the draft bill but the Minister appear unconcerned.Here is a short summary and guide to the main points of the Jan LokPal Bill which IMHO deserves the support of the whole Indian civil society.

Increasing Oil Prices is the biggest Achilles Heel of the Indian Economy heavily dependent on imported oil products.The government will have to either raise the prices leading to adding fire to the already high inflation or compensate the badly bleeding half privatized Oil Companies like IOC,BPCL and HPCL.These companies generally make massive losses despite having private investors apart from the government.Compensating these losses would lead to a higher fiscal deficit which would add to the inflation pressures anyway.Note a recent survey revealed that the Indian Middle Class has cut its expenditure on shopping,eating out and entertainment by a whopping 65% due to the high inflation.However the Indian Stock Market has seemingly discounted all these factors going up by 10% in 10 days on the back of a global rally.Bernanke Fueled Cheap Money is Circulating Hungrily across the Globe and currently India seems to be the fashion trend of the month.Note these hot money flows can reverse equally quickly leading to a sharp market crash just like the Jan-Feb one as fundamentals hardly support this kind of rally.With government intervention and distortions becoming the overriding factor in the stock markets,Free Markets and Fundamentals have taken a backseat.

India is going to be the biggest Markets for Clean Technology in the world in the lines of China which has already become the largest investor in Green Industry with over $50 billion in public and private investment.India is investing heavily in solar and wind energy and its only a matter of time before other Green Sectors like Electric Vehicles,Energy Efficiency and Smart Grids receive massive investments as well.Finnish Firms with strengths in Electricity Distribution,Wind Energy,Automation are setting their sights on the Indian market which requires large infusions of Technology and Investment.

Indian Politicians Corruption and Lack of Respect for Law is becoming more blatant by the day.Despite numerous scams and scandals hitting the media everyday,the corruption continues on unfazed.The minister of education of the Goa state was found with an astounding 10 million dollars in cash at the Mumbai airport while Alagiri who is a federal minister has been found to have assaulted an election official in his hometurf of Madurai.These politicians have managed to make a mockery of the Indian justice system as they know they won't get prosecuted or arrested.Note numerous scandals have hit the headlines but none of the major minister or bureaucrats are doing jail time.Most of the corruption cases have been buried by equally corrupt Indian investigative agencies.The only cases being pursued is where India's Supreme Court has ordered a personal investigation.Expect none of these 2 above incidents to result in anything where Indian politicians continue to treat Indian democracy as a medieval feudal system.

Sharad Pawar,India's powerful agricultural minister and the president of the international cricket body ICC has managed to get involved in most corruption scams coming out in the last year or so.However he has managed to come out unscathed even as his fingers are in multiple corruption pies.The name of Pawar and his daughter Supriya Sule ( who is a MP what a surpise) has come up in multiple corruption scandals like the 2G Telecom Scandal,IPL Cricket Scandal and Lavasa Scam etc.However it points to his influence and reach,that nothing has happened.He is the leader of a regional party which is part of the ruling coalition in the centre.

India has become the latest country to join in the bashing of Renminbi undervaluation saying it leads to a massive advantage for Chinese exporters.A research paper from India's Central Bank says that its artificially boosts China giving it a competitive advantage over Indian exports.Note Brazil another one of the famed BRIC quartet has too been complaining about Chinese imports swamping its industry.Note Brazil has seen massive currency appreciation in recent years due to a combination of high interest rates and strong economic fundamentals.

It remains to be seen whether the top corporate executives of India's topmost conglomerates get prosecuted over these wrongdoings.Essar and ADAG are amongst the top 10 conglomerates in India with wide ranging operations with billions of dollars in revenues nationally as well as internationally.The Supreme Court has been instrumental in bringing this case so far as the government seems totally coopted by corruption.It has been frequently been castigated by the Supreme Court and has shamelessly defended corrupt bureaucrats and politicians.It remains to be seen how this 2G Telecom Case ends.If justice is done,then it may provide a new chapter to India's corruption ridden story till now.

Wikileaks has not only caused problems for the US by exposing its diplomatic cables but has caused consternation and embarassment in almost all countries.Leaders of a lot of countries have got exposed for their hypocrisy and doublespeak.In fact Wikileaks also contributed to the current unrest in the Middle East by revealing the extravagance and corruption of the ruling regimes in Libya and Egypt.The same script is now being played out in India as well where a leading newspaper the Hindu has partnered with Wikileaks in printing the sordid details related to India.

The Wikileaks Cable says that an Indian Official Nachiketa Kapur showed an Embassy Staffer Two Chests filled with millions of Ruppees in Cash meant for bribing legislators.This corruption scam is the latest in a series over the last 6 months or so.Already India's previous Telecom Minister is cooling his heels in Jail and crucial leaders of the ruling coalition have been questioned in the 2G Scam.Most of Indian corporate chieftains have also been implicated in the Telecom Scam with mudslinging in full flow.India's Foreign Policy is being made by such crass and corrupt leaders is a shocking revelation though nothing new.Earlier Jharkand state had seen its legislators convicted of accepting bags full of cash during the earlier Congress regime.So this means that bribing and making Indian Policies is not a new thing.India's Opposition Parties are making a huge hue and cry and demanding the PM's resignation.

Income Inequality in India has been rising at an unprecedented rate in the last couple of decades.The opening of the Indian economy has led to even starker levels of income disparity among the very rich and majority of the Indian citizens.The Crushing Income Disparity is seen in the world's most expensive $2 Billion House set amongst 42% of the world's hungry children.The latest Forbes report lists 50 Indian Dollar Billionaires with 2 in the Top 10.A 2007 report by the state-run National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector (NCEUS) found that 77% of Indians, or 836 million people, lived on less than 20 rupees (approximately US$0.50 nominal; US$2 PPP) per day.The living conditions of the majority have already fallen further with food price inflation between 10-20%.

Now a senior military officer of the Indian Air Force has been caught taking a bribe of Rs 20000 ( $450) for giving a favored spot to a company for displaying its fares at an exhibition.With their seniors reaping in the moolah through corruption,it has become acceptable to lower level officers to take bribes as well.The venality is spreading at a rapid pace though the Indian system.The Indian government despite being repeatedly rebuked by the courts for their inaction,remains shamelessly unrepentant.With the Indian Defense Forces now also being caught in the corruption tangle,India's external security has also become riskier.

It is impossible to buy tickets to cricket matches as all the tickets have been given by the officials to their cronies and colleagues.So if you want to buy a ticket to see a cricket match you can't do that.This has even led to the ICC saying that it will lead to bad relations with sponsors .Note the Minister has cropped up in a number of major scams like the Lavasa Scandal,IPL Scam etc.However his role as an ally supporting the government has made him immune to any prosecution.The Indian Police instead of booking a case against ICC corruption has hit out at fans angry at being denied to see a match as no tickets are sold.India is a Banana Republic except that the Supreme Court manages to occasionally shame the government and bring a culprit or 2 to book

Income Inequality and unemployment amongst white collar workers is a massive growing under-appreciated problem in India and China.These countries despite growing tremendously have built in severe distortions which are only becoming bigger by the day.Graduates in both countries increasingly find a massive demand deficit for their services while income inequality grows bigger as billionaires build billion dollar houses amidst people earning less than $2 day.

Corruption in India seems to be throwing up a new character everyday with almost all the major institutions - judiciary,executive,corporates,bureaucrats,media being tainted by it.The latest to join the corruption bandwagon is the US Food MNC Kraft specifically its subsidiary Cadbury.Note Carbury is one the biggest chocolate brands in India and has been present in the Indian market for a long time.The Corruption Charges are said to be in minor in nature as SEC is probing whether Cadbury gave bribes to set up a manufacturing plant in India.I would be surprised if they managed to set up a plant in India without giving a bribe.India's bureaucrats are notoriously corrupt and the venality has only increased despite numerous scams and scandals being exposed.

India too needs to be worried from these missile developments.Note the Defence Minister had said that he was concerned from the rapid modernisation of China's military forces but was not overtly worried.I think its time for him to worry as China's armed forces show massive technological improvement.Note China has the largest military force in the world in terms of number but it lags way behind in technology compared to the West.However that is changing with growth of the Chinese Economy the 2nd biggest in the world.China and Indian relations have been quite tense of late with China raising the ante on a number of issues.China has been placing missiles in Tibet while India is deploying fighter aircraft and troops near its borders with China.

The recent Supreme Court case dealing with the phone tapping of a political leader who has fallen on bad days has revealed an astounding fact.The Indian Government taps more than 100 phones a day just from a single telecom operator.When the Supreme Court castigated Reliance Telecom for tapping the phone based on a phony letter full of bad grammar,the operator revaeled that it had recieved requests to tap 150,000 phones over a period of 5 years.This reveals a massive systematic abuse by the government of its powers.This sort of behaviour seems more like that of a police state like Egypt rather than a flourishing democracy.Talking on the mobile phone has suddenly become a dangerous activity as Big Brother Indian government is listening to most of the country's communications.The recent Nira Radia phone tap leak shows the complete respect for privacy.It is not only the government,the service providers in the country have scant respect for your privacy.Telecom operators,Banks,Travel Agencies will sell your information for a pittance to marketing agencies.Telecom operators will not only sell your information but also the list of all your contacts.

This time India's Space Research Agency ISRO has come under the scanner for giving a sweetheart deal to a private company without bidding and tenders.This has resulted in another huge loss for the public treasury just like the Telecom Scam.The Space Agency comes under the direct authority of the Prime Minister and has further muddied the waters for the ruling coalition.With scam per day performance,the government is under tremendous pressure and losing its way in reforming the economy.Corruption in India is literally taking on Galactic Proportions and showing no signs of stopping.The Devas-Antrix Deal has also foreign investors which makes scrapping the contract for giving spectrum to Devas difficult.With India's Supreme Court breathing down its neck over prosecuting the guilty in the Telecom Scam,the government finds itself besieged.It can hardly afford opening another corruption frontier when it already finds its hands full with the existing scams.
