Mutual Fund Companies in India – Front Running Underperformers? Also Mutual Fund Industry Marketshare

Mutual Fund Companies have seen a steady growth driven by the growing financial assets being generated by the fast growing Indian economy. But the Mutual Fund Industry like other sectors such as Real Estate and Telecom too has come under the spotlight for some illegal activity. While you can't call the industry corrupt because of some fraudulent activities it does raise questions on the industry ethics.Top Mutual Funds in the country like HDFC and L&T have been fined by the stock market regulator SEBI for front running. For those who don't understand what the term means, front running is an illegal activity whereby a fund manager or fund official makes personal gains by making trades on his account before doing a trade for the fund. This causes losses for the fund investor and is akin to stealing. However like other corrupt practices in the stock market industry,SEBI lets them go with small fines which don't deter more such frauds. It is also not unknown that some fund managers connive with company promoters and market operators to rig and do circular trading. Not only is this a problem, another massive problem with the industry is its underperformance as compared to the benchmarks. While earlier mutual funds were known to outperform the benchmarks like the Nifty,a recent Crisil study has dispelled this myth.Given these disadvantages of mutual fund ,it is time to invest in Indian ETFs though not a lot of variety exists in the Indian stock market yet.

6 Advantages and 6 Disadvantages of Mutual Funds vs ETFs – Why Mutual Funds are a Bad Investment

Mutual Funds are one of the most common ways to invest in equity and debt and a large mutual fund industry is involved in this endeavour. There are large number of high paying professions in Wall Street which depend on the mutual fund industry which include stock brokers and sales persons. However the amount of cost of mutual funds is not proportionate to the gains they give out. This is the reason that Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and passive funds which have lower expense ratios and expenses are gaining billions of dollars in money. The reason is that a large number of mutual funds regularly underperform the benchmarks. This has caused massive heartburn amongst investors who have to pay large amounts of fees for the services of the professional fund managers. This has been the trend historically and found amongst numerous countries as well.Besides the costs of the sales and distribution of these mutual fund with their hefty commissions also falls on the investor ultimately. However the prevailing custom of investing in mutual funds is not easily broken despite the underperformance of the mutual fund industry. Most of the advantages of mutual fund can now be found in ETFs which have much lower costs. They also remove the disadvantages such as the possibility of a bad mutual fund manager.

How to Save Electricity and Reduce Home Power Bills in India (Simple Ways for Lighting,Home Appliances and Entertainment)

India suffers from a massive electricity deficit with large swathes of the country undergoing power blackouts of as long as 8-10 hours on a regular basis. The problem becomes even more acute in the summer season when air conditioners are being used in an increasing number of homes and offices. The industry too is using more and more amounts of electricity as the Indian economic growth rate has exceeded at 8% in the last few years. The electricity situation has not improved and looks like it will become more miserable. The sorry state of affairs is that the cost of fuel is rising but the electricity regulators are loath to increase prices. This means that Indian electric utilities will supply low power as they will be reluctant to buy higher cost electricity.According to CEA,India had a peak demand of around 116 MW in Apri-Dec 2009 with 101 GW of Supply resulting in a 12.5% Demand Deficit. The Fast Growing Economy has resulted in even higher demand for power which has not been met by increased demand.

National Green Tribunal (NGT) of India – What you need to Know (History,Challenges,Circuit Benches,Necessity)

India has become the third country in the world to start a National Green Tribunal (NGT) which is a judicial body exclusively meant to judge environmental cases.Note Environment has become the one of the most important issues in the country affecting the broader society.Alongwith Land Acquisition, environment has become the most frequent conflict flashpoint. There have been numerous case where large industries have been confronted by local people fighting for the environement.Recent cases like the Vedanta Bauxite smelter in Orissa,Thermal Power Plants in Andhra Pradesh, the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Plant in Maharashtra have seen huge controversy and protests.Note Vedanta Resources has found itself in the centre of controversy over mining bauxite in Niyamgiri Hills which are held sacred by the Dongria Kondh tribal group. With powerful political and bureaucratic patrons,Vedanta has managed to ride roughshod over Tribal Rights. Having a National Green Tribunal (NGT) has become essential for the country so that development can proceed with peace between various stakeholders .Note normal judges and courts don't have the expertise to understand the massive complexities and intricacies involved in billion dollar industrial projects and their impact on the environment. The NGT will have each judge having an environmental expert to guide him/her on the ecological issues so that they can come to an informed judgment.

India Business-Politician Nexus Intimidates Poor Tribals Selling Land cheaply for Janjgir Champa Power Plant (Videocon,Kanwar) Twist Laws

Indian Businessmen and Politicians have been looting the citizens and the treasury of billions of dollars through numerous corruption scams and scandals. While the focus has been on the big corruption scandals at the centre being perpetrated by ruling party politicians, opposition party has not been far behind. The Nira Radia Tapes revealed the extent to which the Indian politicians have sold the state to big business.Major ministers are appointed by the major industrial conglomerates leading to billions of dollars in embezzlement. There are numerous instances like the Commonwealth Games Scam,Adarsh Scam, the 2G Telecom Scam etc. Many of the politicians are now big businessmen themselves owning companies legally and illegally.According to Nira Radi,India's agricultural minister is the benami owner of one of the largest realty companies DB Realty whose CEO is cooling his heels in jail for the 2G Scam. The concerned minister is also involved in the Lavasa City Scam in which a whole city was built in partnership with HCC flouting all environmental norms and regulations.

China lowers Tax on Poor as Rising Inflation,Income Inequality (Gini Coefficient at 0.47) reaches Dangerous Levels

China has increased the tax exemption limits for urban workers by 80% to $540 a month as soaring inflation and rising income inequalities has reached dangerous levels.Note increasing corruption and vast income inequalities have led to increasing incidences of violence and riots in the country. The prices of essential commodities like food and fuel have been increasing rapidly like in the rest of the developing world.Despite the central bank increasing interest rates, the prices have hardly moderated.Pork prices have touched new records making the life of the poorest quite unbearable.Note Gini's coefficient in China has reached 0.47 which is very high. While economic prosperity has increased,a vast section of the population remains poor. This is apparent in the fact that only 24 million workers out of 300 million urban workers earn more than $6500 per year .

India sees a Flash Crash as Nifty crashes by 3% in 10 minutes as Mauritius might lose Tax Haven Status

The Indian Stock Market saw a flash crash on the morning of 20th June at 10 am.The market which started weak at 9 am fell by almost 3% in 10 minutes. The main index Nifty which was trading at around 5350 crashed to around 5200 in around 10 minutes. The market recovery by 1% but is again starting to go down to the low levels fo 5200 .Note the Indian stock market has been hammered due to worries on inflation, massive endemic corruption which is facing protests from the civil society. The FIIs which are the main buyers of Indian equities in the last year or so seem to have abandoned the Indian stocks as QE2 starts ending and global risks like Greece,US slowdown, inflation and interest rates worries in emerging markets come to the fore.Note Indian stock markets are not the easiest to invest in with scams and scandals happening regularly and it at best remains a market in which you have to choose between the bad and the ugly.

India's Agricultural Loan Interest Subsidy Perversity- How Rich Farmers Make Risk Free 3-5% Carry using Zero Capital

India's policymaker keep making dumb policies to promote agriculture in the country which leads to huge losses for taxpayers and leads to no gains for poor farmers. One such policy is to give a interest rate subsidy of 3% to farmers who have repaid their loans. This means that if you are getting a loan from the banks at 7.5% normally, you will now get it at 4% if you are a farmer who has repaid his loans.Note the condition "repaid his loan" is meant to sound as it he has great thing like saving someone from a burning building.Last time I though all loans were meant to be repaid. But evidently different rules apply to farmers who were in the election year in 2009 were given a loan waiver. The government effectively allowed the farmers to convert their loans to a grant. It was an indirect gifting of billions of dollars to farmers to get votes and it worked splendidly for the ruling Congress party.A winning idea is seldom abandoned even it leads to perverse economic outcomes.

Indian Equity Investing – Offshore Funds and Portfolio Management Schemes (PMS) give big losses, fool investors, trail benchmarks – Better off investing in ETFs

Indian equity investing through offshore funds might not be the best idea as these funds have underperformed the benchmarks by putting too much weight on infrastructure and capital goods sector.Note lured by the $500 billion investment target for Indian infrastructure,an Indian infra ETF INXX was also launched at a ludicrous valuation. However the endemic corruption in India with scams related to major infrastructure sectors like Real Estate,Telecom popping up everyday, its not a surprise that the stocks have tanked.Note investing in the Indian stocks markets is hazardous with issues like insider trading, pump and dump schemes quite rampant. The risks of corruption are huge and even top asset managers like Goldman,GMO have become victims of fly by night operators just like a simple retail investor.

Competition Commission of India (CCI) makes itself a Laughing Stock by imposing a pitifully small fine on Film Producers for Cartelizaiton

India's new anti monopoly watchdog Competition Commission of India (CCI) has belatedly started operations and its first few orders hardly inspire much confidence.Note most of the developed countries like USA and European Union have highly developed and advanced competition regulators which impose hundreds of millions in fines against domestic and international companies who indulge in anti-market practises. The huge fines serve as a great deterrence where powerful corporates try to undermine the market forces through their sheer size. The landmark anti monopoly legal cases against Microsoft,LCD companies have proved to be very effective in punishing super powerful businesses who have shafted consumers through illegal practises.

BJP finds it hard to fight Congress on Anti-Corruption as its own Ministers(Kalia,Swarna Ram,Yeddurappa) Indulge in Land Scams

BJP,the chief opposition party in India is finding it hard to fight the ruling party's widespread corruption as its leader are too compromised in land scams of their own.The Karnataka ministers of the BJP are known to be amongst the most corrupt in the country with the CM himself indulging in land scams along with his sons. The Bellary trio of Reddy brothers have amassed billions of dollars through plundering iron ore illegally and having literally bought the government in Karnataka for the BJP with their ill-gotten wealth.Karnataka’s Chief Minister has justified corruption as tradition and despite huge pressure to resign managed to survive due to unique caste politics of India .The Supreme Court has called the corruption in India “mind boggling” while the Chief Vigilance Officer had earlier called 30% of India’s population utterly corrupt. Now the BJP's ministers in the Punjab government have been accused of land scams in the state. Two of the BJP ministers Manoranjan Kalia and Swarna Ram have been implicated in a Land deal on the outskirts of Chandigarh.Kalia holds the industries and local bodies portfolio, Ram is social welfare and justice minister.

Why India's Green Energy 12th Five Year Plan Target of 17000 MW is Too Low

Renewable Energy in India has seen decent growth in the past mainly driven by Wind Energy which accounts for almsot 65% of the estimated 20 GW of Green Energy capacity installed in the country. However to meet India's 2020 Green Energy Target of 15% of power to be generated from renewable sources set by CERC,at least 40 GW more would need to be installed (that is a conservative estimate as load factors for green energy are lower). This is assuming that India meets its target of raising the power capacity to 400 GW by 2020 from around 175 GW at present.Solar Energy in India has not got off to a good start despite immense potential as the federal subsidy program JNNSM has seen irrational bidding by bit players and debt financing is difficult.Wind Power in India has seen the most growth amongst the green sources of power but it too faces hurdles as good quality wind sites have all been taken.

'Regularisation of Illegality' – India's Environment Minister Helpless in Taking action against Ecological Destruction

India's environment minister Jairam Ramesh has pleaded helplessness as he is too being forced to go along with these environmental destructive projects. This is a characteristic which is peculiar to India and has allowed the culture of corruption to flourish. If you build a large enough project with enough billions in investment you can get away with the murder of the environment as the government could destroy such a large investment. These ad hoc measures which lead to construction of illegal projects has been leading to the destruction of ecology in a large scale manner.Only a blanket demolition of all structures built illegally irrespective of the cost will lead to the lessening of the corruption in the business sector.

Government controlled CBI (intentionally) messes up investigation into Minister Corruption in Adarsh Scam

CBI which is India's leading investigate agency controlled by the government at the centre has been known to be a pawn in the ruling party hands. It selectively investigates cases against the opposition and the ruling alliance repeatedly messing up intentionally cases of graft against government ministers at the state and federal level. The Ruling Party has often used CBI as a powerful tool against both alliance parties as well as the opposition parties. This blantant manner of corruption had made the Supreme Court directly take the supervision of CBI in the 2G Telecom Scandal investigation which has thrown top corporate and politicians in jail. Now CBI has started acting tardily in the Adarsh Housing Scandal in which top Congress ministers in Maharashtra, bureaucrats, retired generals and admirals had conspired to usurp real estate land worth crores of ruppees.

India's Central Bank RBI finally throws the Kitchen Sink as Double Digit Inflation Rages on;Hikes Savings Bank Rate to 4%,Repo Rate to 7.25%,Lowers GDP Growth Rate;Stock Market Tanks

India's Central Bank has been steadily raising interest rates in 25 bps increments as inflation has raged at more the double digits for more than a year. However it has not stopped the inflation from coming down as high commodity prices keep the inflation at 9% which is much more than the target of 3-5% inflation rates. With Bernake money printing fueling oil and food prices globally,it looked unlikely that RBI's timid measure would bring the inflation down anytime soon.So this time the Central Bank has thrown the kitchen sink at the problem raising the interest rates by 50 bps to 7.25% which is much more than what the market was expecting. The Central Bank also raised the interest rate on savings rate from 3.25% to 4% which was not expected by anyone.Note the low interest rate on savings bank had been a huge money spinner to top Indian banks which have large deposits of this low interest rate savings deposits.

Earthquake prone Nuclear Power Jaitapur Plant Approval by Indian Government shocks civil society;Jairam Ramesh appears biased towards Ruling Party Pet Projects

Indian government seems not to have learned much from the Fukushima Nuclear Meltdown which has thrown millions of Japanese lives out of gear and caused massive disruption to the economy. The Jaitapur Nuclear Power Plant to be built by NPCIL using Areva's experimental nuclear reactors has got the federal government's environmental clearance.Note the protests against the plant had got a political color with local opposition parties getting involved.A number of villagers have already been killed by police firing and further protests are expected.Note India's activist environment minister Jairam Ramesh has proven to be selectively biased towards large industrial projects in Congress ruled states. After appearing to be hero stopping the Niyamgiri project from Vedanta,Ramesh has given the go ahead to politically favored projects. Not a surprise given the endemic corruption present in the ruling coalition which has given birth to a number of corruption scams and scandals.Like everything, even a project of this criticality has acquired a political cover with everyone sounding their party positions without worrying about the possibility of a nuclear meltdown in India.

Lavasa A Township built on Sand – How the Politics-Business Nexus Colluded to give Birth to this Environmental Disaster

Lavasa is a story of corruption, looting of the poor and raping of the surrounding environment by the Indian politician-bureaucrat-businessmen nexus in a beautiful cover of a township built for the rich and well heeled. There is little concern for the law as these powerful developers know that they can get away with murder quite literally. The long term sustainability of the township is in doubt which defeats the entire purpose anyway.Any buyer of property in Lavasa should be aware of these problems and should not buy it as their investment will be eroded in the future anyway besides having the taint of being looted from the poor. However the media too has lost interest as a new scandal emerges everyday. Lavasa Township being constructed near Pune,Maharashtra has been in the media off and on for creating a environmental disaster in the shape of a beautiful township constructed on the hills. The town which has been constructed for 300,000 residents has violated all building and environmental norms of the state and centre. With powerful politicians and businessmen backing the project, its not as surprise that the state government of Maharashtra actively helped the township in bypassing all the laws and regulations. There is no provision for permanent water supply and it would lead to a clash between the water wants of Lavasa and Pune.Note builders in India are notorious for leaving out water and waste sustainability in their plans. The residents of the buildings, apartments and other shelters have to bear the brunt later on when there is no water and problems like waterlogging.Gurgaon the millenium township suffers from both of these problems quite acutely.Note these problems are common to both million dollar homes as well as slums in India.

Air India Corruption Cesspool should be just Shut Down as Politicians greedily milk the Airline Cow and Prevent Privatization

Air India which is India's government owned airline is a cesspool of corruption, sloth, mismanagement and inefficiency. Most of the the aircraft are worse than the second class cabins in Indian trains with cobwebs hanging and dirt piled around. The air hostesses are rude and hostile and over aged as well. The airline has one of the highest manpower to aircraft ratio in the world with more than 200 per aircraft. The airline routinely loses thousands of crores each year which is wasted on the employees who seem more like arrogant owners than workers.Government officials and politicians treat the airline as their personal property making passengers wait in case they are late.Note its not uncommon to find that the seats are torn up and dirty. If you are unlucky you might even find rats running on your feet as the dirtiness invites rodents to make Air India their home. While all airlines have faced tough years, even the worse private airline does not have rats running through them.

India Corruption Cases(2G,CWG) – Scamsters get caught, charged (Kanimozhi,Kalmadi) but will the Big Fish be netted

India has lately become a nation known for endemic corruption rather than the world's poster growth boy with the ruling party members implicated in a number of corruption scams. With the government reluctant to take action against its own,the Supreme Court was forced to take over the supervision of the investigating agency CBI.In the first chargesheet top corporate honchos and CEOs were put under arrest alongwith the former telecom minister Raja and his cronies. With the ruling party under pressure from a civil society movement against corruption, the ability to manipulate the investigation process is limited. Not that the government is not trying put impediments in the court cases and top ministers and leaders indulging in character assassination of the eminent social activists like Santosh Hedge and others. This comes even as other chief ministers of the Congress like Gehlot get caught in nepotism.

Greening of Leather Industry in India pushed by Government with $42 million grant

India's Leather Industry worth more than $7 billion annually is heavily fragmented with small scale units accounting for almost 80% of the industry's revenues. The lack of scale has led to the leather industry not using the best technology and practises as a result it has been heavily polluting the surrounding water and air.The leather industry is present in clusters in many parts of the country like Kolkata,Kanpur,Punjab and other other places. The common theme running across these clusters is their uniforming polluting ways.Leather industry is a a typically developing country activity as the labor and low value add involved has made developed countries mostly outsource production to least developing countries where regulations are lax. However the environment unfriendly activities have become untenable with the major export markets imposing strict ecological regulations about production and sale. This has made it difficult for the industry to cope up as they lack the capital and technology to put in pollution control equipment.

Yet Another Congress Chief Minister(Gehlot) accused of Corruption in Government Contracts

The Congress Party and its leaders can't stop being caught in corruption scams and instead of trying to correct them, they slander and character assassinate civil rights activists who try to bring about an anti-corruption bill in the country. The Adarsh Housing Scandal in which the Congress Chief Minister in Maharashtra was involved had to resign though no jail time for him or for his associates. The Scam which also involved top bureaucrats,Corrupt Indian Military Generals and other sleazy officials has died a natural media death as fresh scams take their place. Not that the Opposition party BJP is any better with its Karnataka Chief Minister failing to resign despite being accused of a number of scams.Note the Karnataka Ministry of the BJP has robber mining barons as top ministers who have made billions of dollar through illegal mining of iron ore.
