Power Transmission for Renewable Energy in India to be Funded by Coal Tax

India may uses the planned $500 million to $1 Billion in Coal Taxes it expects to generate every year to build transmission lines for renewable energy.Note one of the main impediments for renewable energy is the lack of transmission capability on part of utilities to move clean energy from remote areas to urban demand centres.USA faces an acute problem in this regard and faces a massive debate on how to fund the power grid from windy areas to cities.India too faces a problem in this regard as renewable energy plants mainly wind and solar are to built in remote locations.Note India's Power Grid is very inadequate as large parts of the country lack electricity due to lack of distribution networks.

Indian Alternative Energy in 2010 sees strong 50% growth led by Wind Energy

Alternative Energy in India saw significant growth in 2010 with the last 9 months of the year seeing capacity additions of 1800 MW which is almost 10% of the total installed capacity of 18500 MW.The growth in renewable energy was led by Wind Energy which forms almost 70% of the total renewable energy capacity in the country at around 13500 MW.The strong incentives given by both state and central government has led to the sharp growth of wind energy.Note Wind Energy is quite close to Gas based electricity price.India Needs at least 68 GW of Renewable Energy Capacity by 2020 to meet its RPS target of 15% set by CERC (note this is capacity only not hours of electricity).

HP joins Siemens,Suzuki,Vedanta in Scamming Indian Minority Shareholders

Indian Stock Markets are full of stock market manipulators and operators trying perennially to loot the small investor with the regulator SEBI mostly turning a blind eye.Pump and Dump IPO issues, circular stock rigging in small caps, corporate governance issues in even large companies are quite endemic.Investing in the Indian markets is a very hazardous activity for the small investor. Its not only the Indian companies but also large reputed MNCs who also keep pulling fast ones on the minority shareholders. The Cairn-Vedanta deal is a recent example where the promoters are rewarded at a higher premium in takeovers through legal shenanigans by large corporate groups.

Does SEBI really want to deter market manipulators as it lets off IPO Scam Panchals with small fine

The Indian Stock Market Regulator SEBI has been seen doing nothing against blatant market manipulation and stock rigging scams.Mid cap and Small Cap Stocks are havens for rigging by promoters and stock brokers as SEBI seemingly does nothing.Even in the primary market, junk IPOs rule the roost with even the recent correction failing to see crap stocks making a debut (Sudar Garmets,Fineotex,Omkar etc.).To anyone with a modicum of common sense it is apparent that such low quality companies could not raise money without manipulating the markets. However SEBI in its infinite wisdom remains blind to this.Stock brokers like Ashika,Dangi continue to operate unimpeded despite being indicted for scamming.Even reputed stock brokers are involved in underhand and shady dealings. However SEBI does nothing indirectly encouraging fleecing of small and retail investors. Not that big investors like Goldman,GMO are immune to fly by night operators as well.

Pot Calls Kettle Black as Indian 2G Telecom Scam Accused ADAG Group blames Bear Cartel for Fall in Infra Stocks

Note it would not be surprising if the allegations were true as the Indian stock market is a pump and dump heaven of IPOs with blatant manipulation by market operators.Price Rigging Rings are also present with mid cap and small cap scams happening with an alarming regularity. With Corruption touching a new high, the Supreme Court has taken over the investigation of the Telecom Scam Probe from the Government. This has led the CBI which is mostly a ruling party puppet to question some top billionaires and politicians. However it remains to be seen if some of the top fish are caught or just some small scapegoats are imprisoned.

Acropetal Technologies IPO – Not Junk but Not Compelling Either

Acropetal Technologies is a bit different from the run of the mill junk IPOs coming out in Feb 2011.After a deluge of crap IPOs in 2010,2011 has not seen many of them as the markets have corrected by around 15%.However a recent rally has bought out the junk companies in association with their associated shady bankers and market operators.Omkar,Sudar,FCL are some of the totally crap IPOs which have happened or in the process of happening.Acropetal Technologies is an IT/ITES company plans to raise Rs 170-crore through its IPO on February 21. The company has fixed the price-band of its IPO at between Rs 88 and Rs 90 per equity share. The company will use Rs 55 crore for acquisitions and Rs 26 crores for a software office. The company seems better quality than the junk and may merit a look from investors though there are much better companies on offer at better prices in the secondary markets. Here are the positives and negatives of the IPO

Sudar Garments IPO Review – Extremely Low Quality,High Valuation with a Shady Investment Banker

In the season of scams and scandals when the erstwhile high flying mid cap and small cap names are getting battered for management issues,Sudar Garments has surprisingly come out with an IPO despite spotty corporate governance issues.Like so many of the junk IPOs coming out in 2010,this one too should managed to raise money through market operators. The modus operandi of these IPOs is mostly pump and dump where a few unscrupulous and shady brokers are responsible for managing the issue. With the stock market regulator SEBI refusing to crack down on these blatant manipulation, the pipeline of crappy small cap junk IPOs in the Indian stock market keeps growing.Thought that the current market crash would have removed them, but apparently not so as the junk IPO industry keeps growing stronger. This despite the more than 50% crash on issue day of Omkar Chemicals ( a junk IPO).Here are some of the notable negatives of the issue which has been given a 1 out of a 5 rating by rating agency CRISIL (not that the rating help the retail investors).

India's Darling Infrastructure Stocks which could do no wrong turn Lepers Overnight (INXX)

India's Infrastructure Sector which was considered the ideal play on India's fast growing GDP and its huge infrastructure requirements long commanded nosebleed valuations. While realty stocks which are closely related to the infra ones had long collapsed after the GFC in 2008 ,the infrastructure stocks had retained their preeminence in the stock market rally. However end 2010 and 2011 has seen a vicious change in their fortunes.Stocks like IVRCL,IRB,Punj Lloyd,L&T,Gammon etc have seen their stock prices nosedive. The stocks have corrected far more than the broader market which has itself fallen more than 15% in 2011. The problems related to the infrastructure stocks are varied and they have converged for investors to totally lose confidence in this sector something akin to the realty sector. The list of the problems are

Top 5 Indian Stock Market Pitfalls as Nifty falls below 200 EMA(PIN,INP,EPI,INDY)

Indian Stocks Market are a very difficult place to invest despite claims to the contrary which will be made by institutional investors. The all pervasive corruption present amongst most of the company managements makes bottom up stock picking a tough call.Even institutional "smart" investors like Goldman,GMO frequently get tripped by fly by night operators.Market operators blatantly manipulate stocks while the primary market is a "pump and dump" heaven. However the Indian growth story has fooled fund managers from outside to keep investing into the story.I have written in the blog numerous pitfalls present in investing in India. Some of these are coming home to roost as the Indian stock markets have fallen by more than 10% in 2011 despite other markets making new highs. Here are the top 5 Headwinds facing the Indian markets in 2011.

Did Italian Solar Growth really increase by a mind boggling 500% to 6 GW in 2010

Italian Electricity Regulator really shook the global solar market saying that approximately 6 GW of Solar Installations were done in the country in 2010 up almost 500% from 2010.While 2 GW were installed and connected in 2010,4 GW worth of application were submitted by 50,000 installations which were installed but not connected. This means that that Italy's target of 8 GW in 2020 was almost fully met in 2010 itself.I had written that Italian Solar Feed in Tariff Subsidy Cuts for 2011 will fail to stop the Boom in Solar Demand and the 2020 target would be met much earlier. But 2010 was not in my wildest projection. The combination of high sunlight, high electricity rates, falling solar module prices and attractive feed in tariff by the government has made investing in solar in Italy a hugely profitable venture. So 6 GW is not totally impossible given the massive supply growth seen in solar panels.Every solar company in the world had been shipping to capacity making it a mystery as to what was the source of such demand.Italy might prove to be the answer.

Solar Energy in India – Domestic Content Requirements may be made more Stringent for Longer Time

Note both the Solar Thermal and Solar PV Project bidding have led to grave doubts about how these solar plants will be implemented. Not only are the firms small, unknown with little project experience but they have also bid for feed in tariffs which would definitely lead to losses.According to MNRE,the government also plans to make the local domestic content requirements more stringent. The requirements will be extended to solar inverters as well and the provisions may not stop at 2013 but will go beyond as well.Note the JNNSM mandates that modules for solar energy be made in India in the first year and both cells and panels be made in the 2nd year. This is important for the growth of solar energy equipment manufacturing in India. This has been successfully used by both China and Canada to foster the growth of the green industry in their domestic market. However it has the side effect of raising prices and increasing inefficiency as they would lead to higher costs. They could also lead to the gaming of the system particularly as India is highly corruption prone country.

Punjab & Sind Bank IPO – Very Attractive Valuation makes it a Buy

Punjab and Sind Bank is a National PSU (Public Sector Undertaking) which is coming with a Rs 480 crore IPO by selling 4 crore shares at around Rs 113-120.The Company is offering 18% of its equity in the offering which would give it a market capitalization of roughly Rs 2500 crore ($550 million) at the upper end of the price band.Note there are a large number of mid cap and large cap PSU banks listed on the Indian markets.Note most of the PSU banks have seen a very good bull run in the last year and a half significantly outperforming the rest of the market. However the last 3-4 months have been tough with a LIC Housing Finance Scandal implicating top PSU Bank Officials for taking Bribes for Loans. The rise in deposit rates and tight liquidity has also hurt the sentiment for PSU Bank stocks. However,Banking remains one of the best ways to play the Indian growth story as financial inclusion remains very low.PSU Banks in general trade at low valuations compared to the private bank peers and mid cap PSU banks at lower multiples than larger ones like SBI,Bank of Baroda and PNB. Summary Punjab and Sind Bank seems a no brainer due to its significant discount on its fair valuation. At 5x P/E and around 1.2x P/B ,Punjab and Sind Bank is being sold at a substantial discount to the rest of PSU banks which are lower quality in terms of growth and margins. There are some mitigating factors like the low NIM ratio however the valuation more than covers for that up.The only problem in case of the Punjab and Sind Bank IPO is going to be oversubscription.Like MOIL IPO which saw 55-60 times oversubscription, same thing could happen here also.

India's MidCap Stock Scam gets Murkier as High Flying Agri Stocks get Implicated

Now the Investigative Bureau (IB) has said that another stock market operator Rathod was colluding with promoters of agricultural companies like Ruchi Soya,Karuturi Global and KS Oils to rig stock prices. This was being done through various front companies and maverick investor C Shivasankaran was behind these moves.Note these companies have become the darling of brokerages and media being touted as the next big thing with vertical integration and acquisitions of agricultural land in Africa. The media hype that these companies got also makes one suspect that some of these firms were also involved in this scam. The Modus Operandi was again the same as followed by Dangi and Ashika group firms earlier. It remains to be seen if prosecution results in any jail time for any of these offenders.Generally nothing happens in corruption scandals in India as a SC Judge recently note that corruption had become a way of life.

Has the Tata Group reputation of honesty been tarnished after the Telecom Scam

The Tata Group in India is known for its high standards of corporate governance and ethics. In an environment where Big Business openly colludes with politicians/bureaucrats to blatantly loot and plunder, the Tata Group has stood out for its success and reputation of honesty. While Stock Market Scandals and other Scams happen with great regularity,Tata have generally stayed away from the mess. The Group's Success in diverse sectors such as Metals (Tata Steel),Automobiles (Tata Motors) ,Software(TCS) have made it the most successful business conglomerate.Audacious acquisitions of overseas companies like Jaguar,Corus,Daewoo have announced the arrival of the Indian MNC.However the recent 2G telecom scam has tarnished this reputation of integrity as Nira Radia tapes reveal the chairman of the group Ratan Tata of hobnobbing with a shady lobbyist.Ratan Tata has gone to court over breach of privacy but has not explained why his group companies has appointed an obviously corrupt lobbyist. His Telecom Companies Tata Teleservices and Tata DocoMo were obvious beneficiaries of the adhoc regulation and policy in the last 10 years.A letter from Rajeev Chandrasekharan has in a succinct and factual manner raised questions about the silence of the Tata Group over the last 10 years as the Telecom Shenanigans were being played out.

Hero Honda Promoters Stake Sale Increased Royalty Deal to Fleece Minority Investors

Here Honda which is a Joint Venture between Japanese Automajor Honda and the Hero Group of India is restructuring such that Honda will exit the JV.Note Hero Honda has been immensely successful over the last 2 years riding a vehicle boom in India. While other autos stocks like Mahindra,Tata Motors have risen a lot,Hero Honda has been the star with its leading marketshare in the motorcycle market of India. The terms of the deal in which Honda will sell its 26% stake in the company to the Hero Group is very damaging to minority investors in the JV.According to the deal proposed by the Hero Group and accepted in principle by Honda, the Hero Group will get the 26% at a sharp discount from its market price and in return Honda will get much higher royalties for the next 3 years. This is an open and blatant looting of the minority investors.Note the beneficiaries of this deal will be the promoters at the expense of minority investors since they will have to bear the burden of much higher royalties in the future.

Solar Feed in Tariff in France Halted as Renewable Energy Subsidies become “veritable speculative bubble”

France has halted its solar feed in tariff bubble putting a moratorium on new applications for installing solar panels above for 3 kw installations. This has been done after applications for solar panels exceeded the 500 MW per year target set up by the French ministry. The Prime Minister called the solar feed in tariff subsidies reaching a “veritable speculative bubble”.France has already changed its solar feed in tariffs 2-3 times in 2010 as it tries to fine tune the subsidies so that renewable energy investors earn a decent return. However the fast decrease in solar panel prices has caught the bureaucrats off-guard which is not surprising.Feed in Tariffs in general have been badly designed by most public authorities around the world leading to huge bubbles.Czech has suffered from the biggest solar subsidy bubble on which it recently cracked down through taxes,50% cut in tariffs and other measures as electricity rates increased sharply as subsidies ballooned.Spain and Italy have found their Feed in Tariffs leading to runaway subsidies while Germany which has the most successful FIT program too had to cut FIT by a single ad hoc measure in order to prevent a bubble.

India's Oligopolistic Banking Sector High Lending-Deposit Spread (NIM) due to Lack of Competition

India's Banking Sector is highly profitable earnings very high Lending Deposit Spreads.India's Central Bank RBI has said that this spread (NIM) needs to come down in order for India to grow by double digits. However the Banks are in no mood to change their highly profitable business model. With India's Economy growing at a rapid pace the banks are seeing high credit growth and net interest income as well. They are opposed to any change in the status quo which allows them to make supernormal profits in the highly regulated banking sector.Note I am calling the Financial Sector as an Oligopoly because the Central Bank strictly controls the entry of new players in the Banking Sector.RBI has recently proposed giving new banking licenses to some more companies but it won't change the structure of the industry.

Karnataka – India's IT Capital turns into Land of Land Scams

Karnataka, the southern state of India is known for fostering the growth of the IT industry in India.Bangalore which is the capital of the state is known around the world for being the Technology Capital of India. The state is home to India's biggest and most famous companies like Wipro,Infosys and numerous other IT MNCs.However the state which was known for its Technology prowess is fast becoming the Land Scam Capital.Karnataka has seen numerous land scams as the states politicians took advantage of the appreciating real estate price in Bangalore and surrounding areas. With the sharp increase in purchasing power amongst Bangalore's citizens, the real estate prices shot up in a crazy manner.Real Estate in India is the worst sector in India in terms of Corruption and Real Estate Companies are known to be totally sleazy and corrupt. In fact most of the recent scams in India has one or more Realty Companies as the main prognosticator.

Soaring Coal Prices Increasing Global Electricity Rates making Green Energy more Lucrative

Coal Prices have started to increase in the international market alongwith other commodities like wheat, sugar, corn, gold, copper etc.But unlike other commodities,Coal has a disproportionate effect on Energy Prices.Note Coal is the principal supplier of top energy consumers like China,USA,India,Germany etc.The cheap price and abundance of coal has made it the fossil fuel of choice for generating electricity. The Technology for mining, processing and using coal to generate energy is well developed and cheap. This is the main reason for Coal's growing use despite its reputation as the Dirtiest Form of Energy.Coal Mining also regularly leads to hundreds of deaths even in developed countries like USA and New Zealand. However Growing Carbon Emissions due to Coal and its Supply Shortages has resulted in looking for alternative forms.Clean Coal Technology and CCS are looked upon as means to try and improve the carbon footprint of Coal. However the CCS Technology remains immature and expensive as of now .

Another Indian Stock Market Scandal Erupts as Realty Firm Ackruti City and Broker Dangi get Banned for Rigging Share Prices

India's Stock Market Regulator has been hardly proactive in cracking down on stock market manipulation except for some inefficient scolding. It has banned some companies and a stock market operator for artificially rigging up stock prices through a nefarious scheme so that the stock could placed through QIBs at higher prices.Recently GMO,Goldman,Morgan and Fidilety got conned by a fly by night Indian financier who managed to place $100 million of his company's shares a hugely inflated price.A cursory due diligence by these high flying financial institutions would have shown his business model to a sham.Realty Investing in India is always a dangerous game with real estate firms involved in all sorts of corruption scandals.Akruti City whose shares had seen a massive rise some months ago has been implicated by SEBI for rigging up its share price with the help of a "stock market operator" Dangi. Some other firms like Murli Industries,Welspun Corp have been found to be part of this corruption game as well.Broking Firms like Ashika and Anand Rathi were broking for the Operator.Note SEBI has not done much except banning these firms.I would have though that these white collar crimes should be punished more stringently.Banning some entities without any jail time will lead to more and more of these stock rigging in the future.

How Foreign Exchange Brokers Make Money by Luring Gullible Retail Investors

The number of advertisements by Foreign Exchange Retail Trading Companies have increased dramatically in most of the popular Internet websites in India. These Websites try to lure potential retail suckers by showing pictures of ordinary people making regular monthly income by trading in Foreign Exchange. These ads are total misinformation as hardly any retail investor makes money from FX activity.FX trading is a complex activity at which even professional investors from bulge bracket financial institutions have a hard time in making money.Retail investors almost always lose money in FX trading particularly as Foreign Exchange Trading is a zero sum game compared to equities.Huge amount of leverage makes attracting gullible investors even more easy. The FX retail trading platforms have proliferated in recent days with Retail Trading having multiplied by 900% in the last 10 years to around $100 billion daily.FXCM.com one of the popular trading platforms is coming out with an IPO in the US.These companies have benefited hugely on the back of suckering retail investors.Note these firms need a constant supply of new suckers (sorry customers) in order to run their companies. Here is a article from FT which describes the modus operandi of these firms taken right out of their handbook (IPO prospectus ).

The low level of trust in the Indian government's investigative and vigilance agencies was revealed when India's Highest Court, the Supreme Court of India blasted the government for its choice of the Central Vigilance Commissioner.India has been rocked by a series of Housing Loan,Telecom and Land Scams recently implicating top politicians, bureaucrats and even army generals and admirals. However no one expects anyone significant to be prosecuted as the prosecutors themselves are compromised. It is openly known that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is totally controlled by the ruling party at the centre. The Income Tax and Enforcement Directorate also serves as puppets of the government being selectively used against opposition politicians and businessmen.

List of Top Real Estate Companies in India;A Sector Plagued by Scams and Scandals

Organized Real Estate Industry in India is only a couple of decades old .Real Estate Industry in India took off with the global boom in the Realty Sector which percolated down to India as well.Lack of clear land titles and litigation has made this industry one of the most opaque and corrupt ones.Due to the massive price appreciation and huge valuations,Land Scams have become quite common with Chief Ministers,Generals,Top Bureaucrats all involved in the murky environment of Real Estate in India. The most recent scam related to bribing of top public banks officials in the LIC Housing Finance Scandal has again put question mark on the fundamentals of the industry.Valuing the industry and making a real estate investment remains one of the most difficult investing tasks in the Indian Stock Market.Even Fund Managers are staying away from the Sector due to lack of trust in the Financial Statement given by the industry. That said modern India presents a booming picture of tall buildings and huge office areas & shopping malls. India's Solar Policy JNNSM in Jeopardy due to Irrational Bidding,Financing Difficulties and Small Plant Size

India's JNNSM Phase 1 which is targeting 1000 MW of Solar Power Capacity by 2013 is in jeopardy due to irrational bidding, financing and small size. The 150 MW Solar PV and ~500 MW of Solar Thermal Capacity which has been put to bidding is going to see massive discounts. This will eventually lead to project winners abandoning these projects or delaying it inordinately, leading to a failure of the first phase.India Solar Thermal Bidding has already seen Massive Discounts from the base prices of Rs 15.31 set by CERC and the Solar PV project bidding for 150 MW is going to see equally ferocious discounts.Tata Power, which is India's largest private utility is staying away from these auctions due to the above problems.Renewable Energy in India has a huge growth potential with Solar Energy the brightest Green Energy Sector. This has attracted companies in droves leading to hyper competition for the first phase of India's Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission. However huge competition in this subsidy driven sector is not necessarily good for the growth of Renewable Energy as irrational bidding by small players would lead to project failures.

Renewable Energy in India – Past,Present and Future

India has set up ambitious targets of meeting 15% of its Energy Needs from Renewable Sources up from around 5.5-6% in 2010.WIth India's Electricity Capacity expected to rise to 450 GW from around 165 GW,this would imply that around 67.5 GW of Electricity Capacity would be needed up from around 16 GW.This would mean around 5 GW of Capacity addition every year in the next decade which is a very tall order.20 GW could be met by Solar Energy according to the Jawaharlal Nehru Solar Mission (JNNSM).Most of the rest would have to met by Wind Energy.Biomass Energy has high costs and reliability problems which mini hydro potential is only 1 GW.Note this is just the capacity I am talking about, for meeting the electricity generation, capacity additions would have to be greater as Solar Energy and Wind Energy have only 20-30% Load Factor compared to 60-80% for Fossil Fuel Energy Sources.Nuclear Energy can contribute another 20 GW. Renewable Energy in India is growing at a rapid pace increasing its share of the total capacity from 2% in 2003 to around 10% in 2010.However the share of electricity generation is still quite low at 3% due to the lower capacity load factors of Green Energy Sources compared to Fossil Fuel Sources. The Total Installed Capacity of Renewable Energy in India is around 16 GW with Wind Energy taking the Lion's share at almost 70% followed by Small Hydro at 15% and Biomass Energy at 12%.Solar Energy in India till now has a capacity of just 6 MW which is estimated to grow to 22 GW by 2022 making Solar Energy one of the Biggest Growth Opportunities in the Field of Indian Energy.

Dangers of Indian Realty Investing – Sahara,Oberio Realty,Lavasa and DB Realty prime suspects in latest Corruption Scandal

I have been repeatedly pointing out the dangers of investing in Real Estate Companies as more and more skeletons tumble from the closet. Its an open secret that Real Estate Companies in India fudge their Financial Statements through Creative Accounting and other means such that even Fund Managers don't invest in the Realty Sector.Major Real Estate Companies like IREO and Emaar MGF have played prominent role in some of the major corruption scams rocking the country. Now more big Real Estate Firms have been implicated for their role in other corruption scandals.DB Realty a Mumbai based Realty Company has been found to be a prime suspect in the LIC Housing Finance Scam where the CBI has arrested. Some construction companies like Man Infrastructure,HCC have also become a target of investigation.

How to Beat the Indian Stock Market "Operators" Suckering Investors at their Own Game as another manipulated smallcap Bedmutha Industries gets Dumped

Note most of these companies fundamentals don''t justify even half of the price at which these stocks were issued at.However these companies keep coming with increasing frequency even as the Regulator SEBI chides investment bankers without doing anything real to prevent the retail investors being defrauded again and again.Note Gravita India is another stock which is undergoing a "pump" currently .I expect it to be dumped shortly as the fundamentals of the company are pretty sorry compared to the valuation it is commanding. The illegal grey market of IPO's , the small market cap of the company and the lax attitude of the Stock Market Regulator has made the Indian Stock Market a heavily biased casino. Here is an interesting article which has analyzed that the only way to beat the shenanigans of the "operators" and the promoters is to sell out on the very day of listing.
