Shipping Corporation of India Review – Positives Balanced by Negatives,FPO Price Key to Buy

Shipping Corporation of India (SCI),the government owned carrier is coming out with a Follow on Public Offering (FPO) of 84,690,730 Equity Shares to divest 18% of its equity which will be equally shared by the company and the government. At the current price the company will raise around Rs 600 crores for the company with another Rs 600 crore going to the government. SCI is India's largest shipping line by tonnage deriving most of its revenues from oil/gas transport.SCI like other shipping companies has faced a very bad 2009 due to the sharp contraction in world trade and dropping in shipping rates. However results have started to improve with the improvement in the world economy and it is returning to its normalized sales and profits. The valuation of the company is not expensive according to normalized profits however note that shipping sector in general does not enjoy high p/e due to the cyclical and capex intensive nature of the business. The pricing of SCI has not been decided as of now,in the secondary market it trades at Rs 156 which is near its 52 week low in anticipation of the share dilution due to the FPO.Here is a list of the pros and cons.

Large Utility Scale Solar Projects in USA faces Unlikely Opponents in Defense Industry and Wildlife Activists

The US Government has recently approved a number of Large Scale Solar Thermal and Photovoltaic Projects as Renewable Energy Projects rush to meet the December 2010 Deadline for getting the 30% Subsidy Cash Grants from the US Treasury.California has been leading the way with gigawatts of solar thermal plants being approved. However these projects are facing resistance from local groups due to different reasons.Green Activists are questioning the Environment Friendliness of these projects due to the harmful effects on endangered desert wildlife. While some projects have dedicated millions of dollars for the Rehabilitation and Resettlement of Tortoises and other wildlife,Green NGOs are not convinced. The 660 MW,$2 Billion Tessera Solar Thermal Plant has been put under a review of its approval due to protests that the approval was done with haste and without following proper procedures.Note Large Solar Thermal Projects need hundreds of acres of land and are being frequently built on public land.

India Solar Thermal Bidding sees Massive Discounts;479 MW Projects to be constructed with 90% in Rajasthan

India's ambitious JNNSM Plan to build 20 GW of Solar Capacity by 2022 has seen projects being awarded for 479 MW of Solar Thermal Projects under Phase-1.The Solar Project Bidding was expected to be extremely competitive and it turned out to be exactly that with dis conts of more than 30% being offered to the base price of RS 15.31 for Solar Thermal generated Electricty.Note Rs 15.31 was determined to be a decent price on which a Solar Thermal Plant Developer could get decent returns just a year ago. This means that a 30% Discount would lead to zero or very low returns for the Solar Thermal Winners.According to news reports there are 7 winners for these Solar Thermal Plants 6 of which will come up in Rajasthan which seems to be the biggest winner of these Solar Subsidy Scheme.Andhra Pradesh is the only other state to win a Solar Thermal Project. There were about 60 applicants for the Solar Thermal Part of the Phase 1 JNNSM Bidding from which these 7 have been selected.

Claris LifeSciences Stock IPO Review – Good Growth,Sector and Valuation against Low Quality Management

Claris Lifesciences is one of the few decent size pharmaceutical companies coming out with an IPO of around Rs 300 crores ($65mm) in the price band of Rs 278-293 which would give it a market cap of around Rs 1400 crore. Most of the money would be used in manufacturing expansion as the company is still in the capex phase spending around $20-30mm annually. There is a lot to like in the stock except for the management. The Pharma Sector is one where India has done extremely well boosted by its low cost qualified labor something like the IT sector. The Indian Pharma Sector excel in the Generics Category which has been receiving increasing global attention for reducing ballooning health-care costs.India posseses a definite competitive advantage in the Generics Category. Here is the list of pros and cons for Claris LifeSciences

"Renewable Energy Certificate" Policy Starts in India – What you need to Know and Who will Benefit

Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) Policy is starting in India tomorrow which will allow Green Energy Generators to earn additional tariff.Note the REC Mechanism is also present in different forms in Italy,USA and Australia and has proven a good incentive to promoter Renewable Energy in those countries.India's Electricity Regulator (CERC) has been actively implementing different orders to boost Green Energy Generation.CERC had earlier mandated a 6% Renewable Energy Percentage from Alternative Energy which would go upto 15% by 2020.The REC Policy will help in achieving those targets by providing a pseud market linked mechanism to inentivize Green Power Producers. Who will Benefit Renewable Energy Companies and Green Utilities are set to benefit the most from this Policy.Suzlon has already welcomed the policy saying that Financing will ease for Renewable Energy Projects.Orient Green Power, the largest Green Focused Utility will also be a big beneficiary.Local Indian Wind Turbine Companies should also benefit from the Scheme. It also provides companies outside the JNNSM to get decent returns from solar generation as the REC band for Solar REC has been set between Rs 12-17/Kwh.India need to increase Renewable Energy Capacity by at least 50 GW in the next 10 year to meet the 15% CERC Target

Soros,Khosla backed SKS Microfinance Debacle Exposes India Regulatory and Governance Risks

India's Fast Growing Economy based on Consumption rather than Exports has made it a Darling for International Fund Managers. When the whole world is suffering from some structural crisis or the other,India seems an like an oasis in the desert. However like a Mirage, the Governance and Regulatory Shortcomings make India look much better than what it is.$90 Billion of Record Foreign Inflows have been invested into India mostly into the booming Stock Market even as Indian Retail investors have fled. The dichotomy is perhaps explained by the problems faced by people on the ground who have a better sense than Fund Managers sitting in their Glass Towers in Singapore,New York and London.Insitutional Investors in India are mostly Compromised or Incompetent in my view herding into the Indian Markets dazed by the positive aspects of the Indian Economy while glossing over the Risks.Crushing Income Disparity where a $2 Billion Home is constructed while 80% of Indians live on less than $2 day,Pervasive Corruption with Billions being Swindled in Telecom and Land Scams,Massive Red Tape and Policy Bankruptcy has been ignored. However these Risks remain as can be seen by the SKS Microfinance Debacle.

RPP Infra Projects Review and Analysis – Expensively Priced,Small Construction Junk IPO

India has seen a rash of junk IPO offerings in the past year due to the strong bullish conditions. Most of these IPOs have managed to raise money based on stock market shenanigans by Market "Operators".More than 50% of these micro cap IPO junk has given negative returns but the flow seems unabated as India has become an IPO Pump and Dump Heaven.Aster Silicates,Tarapur Transformers,Prakash Steelage,Sea TV are some of the microcap junk that I have written about earlier.R.R.P Constructions joins the infamous bandwagon trying to sucker money from retail investors. The Company is expensively prices, slow growing (compared to other construction peers),has management that you would not want to trust a dollar with, high debt and still wants you to pay ~25x P/E.There are many better opportunities in the Construction and Infrastructure Space in India right now for example Tecpro Systems and VA Tech Wabag. Here are some R.R.P Construction stock negatives gleaned from its DRHP as I could not find any positive about the company.

Why Solar Power in India will be led by Sunny,Western States of Gujarat and Rajasthan

Solar Energy in India represents one of the best Energy opportunities in the 21st Century. However the growth at least in the initial stages will be geographically unequal. This is due to the fact that Solar Power requires strong government support and subsidy currently.Without a proactive administration which smooths out the process of setting up a solar plant, growth of solar energy is almost impossible. The Indian Federal Government has already given it a strong push targeting 1000 MW by 2013 and 20 GW by 2022 under the JNSSM.While the Subsidy Program is facing some initial hurdles due to debt financing and aggressive project bidding, the long term secular growth story remains good. Some states have also been aggressive in supporting solar energy namely the western states of Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Real Estate IREO under Tax Scanner for Black Money Roundtripping

IREO,a new Real Estate Company which is making waves in India's National Capital Region (NCR) with glitzy projects has now come under the tax scanner for illegal fund inflows from tax havens of Mauritius and Cyprus. It is alleged that black money from India has been roundtripped through these tax havens in the guise of Private Equity Money. It is an open secret that Black Money from India finds its way back to India through tax havens in the form of foreign investment when it just a roughtripping of domestic money. The figure quoted is around $1.5 billion of illegal money pouring into 26 companies associated with IREO.The company came into focus during the Commonwealth Scam and is linked to an Opposition Party leader. As usual their are denials, media circus and the whole thing will end as it does all the time with Nothing Happening.

India remains an IPO Pump and Dump Heaven for Fly by Night Operators

India's Stock Market remains a heaven for Pump and Dump Operators of IPOs.Despite some high quality IPOs in recent times like Coal India, the majority of the IPOs being done are by fly by night operators and promoters.Their is little justification for the valuation and the subscription numbers. But it is a lucrative trade for shady operators who easily manage to manipulate small cap IPOs leaving huge losses for retail investors. The stock market regulator SEBI strangely remains asleep at the wheel despite some blatant pump and dump issues.More than 50% of the IPOs in the Indian stock market over the past year are below their issue prices. But there has been no investigation and prosecution over these white collar crimes just seem gentle scolding.Like the totally infamous and ineffectual SEC of the US Stock Market,SEBI looks more and more like a toothless tiger.Despite some laudable reforms in favor of retail investors,it needs to act more quickly and reform much more.

3G in India – A Marketing Gimmick or a Game Changing Technology

3G Technology made a lot of waves in India after the government managed to make a huge sum in auctioning off the airwaves required for using the 3G Technology.India's big telecom providers like Airtel,Reliance,Tata Docomo,Vodafone and others fought tooth and nail for this precious resource. In the end it remains questionable whether the government really gained from the Rs 100,000 crores it got.Critics say that to recuperate this massive expenditure, companies will provide 3G services at very expensive rates making communication in India an overall loser. However it remains to be seen as leading providers Tata Docomo and Airtel start providing 3G services in 2010 itself.Note Docomo is one of the 3-4 Japanese telecom giants which has implemented 3G Technology a few years ago which proved to be a big success. While Japan has had a good 3G experience, other countries did not have it so good.In UK it pretty much turned out to be a cropper. It remains to be seen whether in India it can be a success or not.

Private Equity Backed For-Profit Microfinance Companies in India face Societal Backlash

Microfinance has become one of the hottest growth sectors in India attracting Private Equity Companies eager to take advantage of India's Growth Story.A Number of For-Profit Microfinance Companies have grown exponentially in recent times with funds raised from Foreign PE Firms. The Business Model of these Financial Intermediaries is highly profitable with 25-40% Interest Rates being charged from India's Poor Population who don't have access to credit facilities.Borrowing from Banks at 10-12% and lending at 25% gives a huge spread which more than covers the cost of operations in dealing with a huge number of very small borrowers in far flung areas. The recent IPO of SKS Microfinance was a huge success instantly makings it promoters instant millionaires. The stock which was expensively valued nonetheless managed to climb by almost 40% in the last 2 months. It brought into focus the whether making such huge profits through essentialy usury from the poor was ethical or not.

Green Investing in India – Siemens partners Adani Conglomerate to expand its Renewable Energy Portfolio

The JV with the Adani Group is a win-win for both companies.Adani Group is setting up 16000 MW of Thermal Based Plants in India over the next few years and has also planned a 100 MW Solar Plant in Gujarat. It has started a company Adani Renewable Energy to take forward its Green Energy initiatives. The tie-up with Siemens will allow it to access cutting edge Green Technology while Siemens will get a huge customer for its Energy Equipment.Renewable Energy in India is a huge growth opportunity considering that India will have to increase its Renewable Energy by almost 45 GW over the next 10 years if it has to meet 15% of its Electricity Requirements from Green Sources as mandated by the CERC.

My Experience in Buying Cheap Car Insurance in India – Avoid Private Insurance Companies

India does not have a lot of good information on the Internet about various common things and it is frustrating and time consuming to go about in choosing the right option.I tried to buy insurance on my 3 year old car and there was not a lot of good blogs/websites which would indicate how to go about buying the cheapest car insurance out there. Most of the websites and insurance comparison websites that have come up are in general biased and promote companies in order to generate commissions. So I decided on doing investigation on my own and finally managed to get extremely cheap car insurance which even surprised me.So even though this blog does not deal with personal finance issues much,I though I would write my experience so that others could benefit without without wasting time and money.

List of Wind Energy Companies in India – Pretenders or World Beaters

Wind Energy in India is the biggest Green Industry currently with around 1 GW of Wind Power Capacity being installed in a year on average. The Growth in Wind Industry has been driven by states like Tamil Nadu who have heavily subsidized and promted Wind Energy.India at around 10 GW of Wind Capacity is the world's 5th largest Wind Energy Producer. However India remains far behind China in terms of Wind Energy Growth .Last Year China installed nearly 13 GW of Wind Energy which is more than India's total installed capacity of Wind Energy. With a target of around 230 GW by 2020,China is on track to install 20 GW of WInd Capacity a Year in the next 10 years which would make India a Pygmy. Also two of the largest Wind Turbine Producers Sinovel and Goldwind are from China.India despite producing a world class company Suzlon in the early states of Wind Industry Development is struggling.Suzlon has fallen on very hard times running big losses while other Wind Companies are of hardly any decent size.

Are Institutional "Anchor Investors" in Indian Primary Market Incompetent , Compromised or Both

Indian IPO Rules allows the Merchant Bankers of the Issue to give favored institutional clients a part of the IPO even before the issue starts. This has the advantage for both parties as funds get a guaranteed portion of the IPO and Bankers can tout the quality of the company. However you would have to question these "Anchor Investors' on how they invest in such IPOs.Prestige Estates a Realty Company coming out with an IPO is another low quality company to come out with a high valuation. So finding 21 Anchor Investors is a surprise.Despite the Real Estate Market being avoided by Fund Mangers due to questionable practice,23 Funds have found it worthwhile to add Prestige Estates to their portfolio.Makes you wonder if Institutional Investors are Plain Incompetent ,Compromised or Both

Indian Regulator SEBI ignores Key Concerns as it Chides Investment Banks over Trivial issues

India's Stock Market Regulator SEBI has castigated the investment bankers for giving investors the short end of the stick. The regulator accused the I-Banking community of only looking out for the interests of the promoters by pricing primary issues too high. The proof is in the fact that 62% of the IPOs in the last 3 years are trading at below issue price despite the fact that Indian markets are near an all time high.Bad practises such as charging zero fees from big band government divestment, unethical if not illegal promotion of IPO companies through planted ads in newspapers were some of the other things that SEBI found objectionable.

Indian Banks Scared of Competition in Savings Rate eroding Supernormal Profits oppose Deregulation

India's Central Bank RBI had proposed to deregulate the savings rate on Bank Deposits as part of the Financial Reforms.Note Savings Rate is the only regulated interest rate in the Banking Sector. This has led to a huge windfall for Indian Banks. With a savings rate of around 3.5% and lending rates of 12%,Banks manage to reap profits from this huge spread in the rates which is commonly known as the "Net Interest Margin" or NIM.Indian NIMs are very high compared to that of other countries because of this discrepancy.Indian consumers are known to deposit most of their savings in Banks as Stocks and other Assets are considered untrustworthy.Banks with high proportion of their deposits in the form of these savings deposits have much higher profitability.Note RBI has increased the returns on the savings deposits recently by shortening the length of the cumulative returns. Indian Banks don't want competition in this space as they will lose the supernormal profits that they make because of this regulation.Private Banks are at the forefront of this opposition which is ironical as they should are the first in welcoming deregulation and competition

Green Investing in India – Largest Electricity Producing State Maharashtra looks to boost Renewable Energy through Subsidized Grid Connection and Grants

Maharashtra is one of the most industrialized states in India but it lags behind other states in Renewable Energy. The recent mandate by the Central Electricity Regulator to increase the requirement of Renewable Energy to 6% of Electricity Produced found Maharashtra having a severe shortfall.Maharashtra has the largest power capacity in the country with around 21 GW but most of it is thermal based generation.Despite having the second largest Wind Power Capacity with 2 GW which is around 42% of the state's potential. However Maharashtra is still considerably short of the 6% Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) set by it.With CERC set to increase the Green Energy Target to 10% by 2015,Maharashtra needs not only to meet the shortfall but also to increase the share of Renewable Energy.

Hydro Power in India causing Environmental,Wildlife and Tribal Rights Concerns

Earthquake Vulnerability - Large Dam Construction has been linked to increased propensity of Earthquakes.Massive Earthquakes in China and Uttarakhand in India were linked to the building of Massive Dams in these countries.Building of Massive Man Made Structures along geologically sensitive areas has not been properly studied and understood till now Summary While Hydro Power is a necessity for an energy starved and growing economy like India, its effect have to be properly assessed and understood before going on a hydro binge.NTPC lost almost $300 million after its 600 MW project was canceled 5 years after getting permission. This was done in the face of large scale protest by local groups and NGOs.2 other projects in Uttarkhand have also been rejected leading to more losses.

Despite US Govt Apathy,NRG Energy follows Exelon snapping Renewable Utility Green Mountain Energy

NRG Energy is one of the largest utilities in the US with around 22 GW of Installed Capacity. However like Exelon, the share of Renewables is relatively low at just 2% of its overall Energy Capacity.Though the US Administration has all but given up on an Energy and Climate Legislation,Big Utilities recognize the need to generate low carbon electricity. Some sort of Carbon Emissions Restraint will be imposed on Utilities sometime in the future with EPA itching for action in restricting CO2 Emissions.Green Sector Stocks have fallen like a rock in 2010 due to the Copenhagen Disaster and lack of movement on a Climate Bill by the US government. Therefore it makes sense for US utilities to buy Renewable Energy Assets on the Cheap.Exelon bought Deere Energy Wind Farms at a dirt cheap price.NRG Energy which has around 550 MW of Wind and Solar Capacity bought Reliant Energy last year for $300 mm.It has augmented its Renewable Energy Portfolio with another $350mm buy of Green Mountain Energy.

Why would anyone want to invest in such a sorry stock is beyond me but I have seen even worse companies list so don't get surprised. The company is basically is using all the investor's money to become a decent business. Its current business with less than $1 million in fixed assets and $500k in profits is not worth putting money into.So if you are a super high risky investor then this stock would make sense for you.

India to make Environmental Protection an Integral Part of the new Shale Gas Policy

Shale Gas Extraction has seen doubts being raised against its Environmental Safety Record. This new form of Fossil Fuel Extraction has seen a Gold Rush from Global Oil and Gas Majors looking to tap into this major new Energy Form.In the initial helter and skelter, environmental norms have been bypassed.Recently a NGO blamed regulators and companies of illegally diverting millions of tons of water in Pennsylvania.India's Biggest Private Company Relaince Industries has invested a huge amount in acquiring Shale Gas Assets in order to assimilate this Technology. The Indian government is writing a new Shale Gas Policy as India is said to have geographical formations with potential Shale Gas Deposits.
